I first read this book when I was twelve years old. My local librarian had recommended A Wrinkle In Time, and that was so great that I hunted down the only other L'Engle book available to me at that time. I found the boarding school life fascinating, totally unimagineable to me at the time. Skiing as well. Flip's first trembling forays into love, real responsibility, ethics, and morality are all something any young child can relate to. This was a wonderful read; still is.

I have loved this book ever since I first read it around age 10. My daughters, now grown up, also read and loved it and still take it on every family ski trip we make! The setting in Switzerland is magical, and even the school is a place you'd want to be (I did!) Philippa is a totally human, identifiable fifteen-year-old, with her faults, foibles and very understandable feelings--I love her roommates, too, especially Erma.At the same time, there is a dark side present in the aftermath of post-WWII Europe and the atrocities of Nazi Germany, from which Europe is still recovering. Through Paul and his parents' fate, through the life of Madame Perceval (Philippa's favorite teacher) and also, most sensititvely, through the divisions in Erma's family, there is realism, interjected into adolescent lives and concerns.Good triumphs, however, and no one can be left un-cheering (and dry-eyed) at the end.I will re-read this book every few years for the rest of my life!

If you are currently roaming the various written reviews deciding whether or not to read this book, stop, and read it. I guarantee you will not find a better written yet beautifully simple story. I believe this book will appeal particularly to teens (I say so because I am one) if not any age, and believe me when I say this, I do not (emphasis on the not) write reviews, but this book just demanded one even at 2:oo in the morning. To any readers who like romance, this is my favorite type, awkard in just the right way and deep yet relatable (not in a complicatly confusing manner as some books tend to gravitate towards). No doubt this book is well written, and in my opinion this book is better than A Wrinkle In Time, which I also love dearly. The scenes are described so vividly, and in such a straight forward manner with every word leaving a lasting impression. This is truly a must read, and once again, very relatable. I am so glad I stumbled upon this rare discovery! Despite being an avid book reader it has been a while since I've been so blown away.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book! It was such an enjoyable read. Will recommend it to my granddaughters!

Don't hesitate to read this one. I have always loved L'Engle's writing, and this novel did not disappoint. I instantly felt connection to the main character, Flip, and loved going through the school year with her.

Wonderful and sweet! Written in a time when the young were allowed to be young. Very enjoyable and a great work of fiction for the young of all ages.

Loved this book as a child, still good memories. My Aunt gave me the paperback years ago and it was lost. Happy to have it again.

A Granddaughter gift and she liked as usual, and couldn't put it down until the end.

Review

"Frequent epidemics of yellow fever, the first disease threatening to destroy continents, and the more recent scourges of HIV/AIDS, SARS, and Ebola show Packard’s scope in enlightening readers who are rarely likely to be so captivated by a university publication. This is a powerful book demanding substantial time and attention." (Manhattan Book Review)"A History of Global Health gives us an unrivalled view from within the belly of the beast, revealing the physiology and pathologies of the organism." (Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences)"Informative and entertaining... Old-timers will enjoy a romp through the eras that marked their careers, and those starting out will learn how we got to where we are and have a gauntlet thrown down on where we ought to go." (Population and Development Review)"A History of Global Health is an excellent addition to the medical historiography. Its strengths lie in its ambitious scope, meticulous research, and convincing arguments. Compellingly written, Packard sets out a critical history of global health initiatives that both historians and global health policy-makers not only should, but need, to read. Packard’s book will no doubt remain required reading for some decades to come." (Canadian Bulletin of Medical History)"Meanwhile, Packard’s exceptional History of Global Health comes very close to this ideal. It is by far the best clear and profound panorama of global health to date. It will be an inspiration and a tool for policy makers, public health scholars, and historians of medicine." (Bulletin of the History of Medicine)"For a long time now, historians have been looking for a book that takes a big picture view of the emergence of global health. This is that book, and Packard is the ideal person to have written it. An impressively lucid synthesis of several disparate bodies of literature, A History of Global Health provides readers with a richer repertoire from which to evaluate health problems and campaigns." (Joanna Radin, Yale School of Medicine)"Packard argues convincingly that the best model for understanding global health is to see it in terms of a ‘North-South’ division of labor. This excellent book uses historically observable patterns to challenge students and practitioners of global health to think of the future." (Steven Palmer, University of Windsor, coauthor of Medicine and Public Health in Latin America: A History)"Randall Packard’s brilliant and sweeping book brims with new insights and provocative claims, all masterfully researched and compellingly argued. A History of Global Health: Interventions into the Lives of Other Peoples is also charged with a moral force that crackles and glows from its subtitle to the last paragraph of its conclusion." (Theodore M. Brown, PhD, Professor of History and of Medical Humanities, Charles E. and Dale L. Phelps Professor of Public Health and Policy, University of Rochester, Rochester New York, History Editor, American Journal of Public Health)"A penetrating, even damning, account of mainstream international and global health across the twentieth century and into the twenty-first. Once again, Randall Packard has produced a must-read volume for specialists and a broader public alike." (Anne-Emanuelle Birn, University of Toronto, author of Marriage of Convenience: Rockefeller International Health and Revolutionary Mexico)"Packard provides the historical and socio-cultural context for the development of what we now call ‘global health,’ a thread that ties Virchow to Gorgas to C.E.A. Winslow to Marmot. This book makes a strong case for and provides solid evidence of the need to balance a biomedical perspective with an appreciation of social determinants to maximize sound global health practice." (Jeffrey Koplan, MD, MPH, Vice President for Global Health, Emory University)

Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper--Case Closed

From Publishers Weekly

Jack the Ripper was renowned artist Walter Sickert (1860-1942) according to Cornwell, in case anyone hasn't yet heard. The evidence Cornwell accumulates toward that conclusion in this brilliant, personal, gripping book is very strong, and will persuade many. In May 2001, Cornwell took a tour of Scotland Yard that interested her in the Ripper case, and in Sickert as a suspect. A look at Sickert's "violent" paintings sealed her interest, and she became determined to apply, for the first time ever, modern investigatory and forensic techniques to the crimes that horrified London more than 100 years ago. The book's narrative is complex, as Cornwell details her emotional involvement in the case; re-creates life in Victorian times, particularly in the late 1880s, and especially the cruel existence of the London poor; offers expertly observed scenarios of how, based on the evidence, the killings occurred and the subsequent investigations were conducted; explains what was found by the team of experts she hired; and gives a psycho-biography of Sickert. The book is filled with newsworthy revelations, including the successful use of DNA analysis to establish a link between an envelope mailed by the Ripper and two envelopes used by Sickert. There are also powerful comparisons made between Sickert's drawing style and that of the Ripper; between words and turns of phrases used by both men; and much other circumstantial evidence. Also newsworthy is Cornwell's conclusion that Sickert continued to kill long after the Ripper supposedly lay down his blade, reaping dozens of victims over his long life. Compassionate, intense, superbly argued, fluidly written and impossible to put down, this is the finest and most important true-crime book to date of the 21st century. Main selection of the BOMC, Literary Guild, Mystery Guild and Doubleday Book Club. Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Patricia Cornwell's book left me very unimpressed. I have read all her Kay Scarpetta novels, and I don't remember feeling that they were full of holes and fluff, like I felt with this book.Unfortunately, I feel that instead of doing the research first and making her conclusion based on that research, instead she came to her conclusion and built the research around it. Her psychological "profiling" seems completely fabricated. She takes quotes completely out of context. She refers to artwork and paintings of Sickert's that she doesn't include. The whole book seems like an essay that she had a word count to complete, and she's filling in with alot of fluff because she doesn't have enough meat or real evidence to make her case.As far as the much-ballyhooed DNA evidence, even that wouldn't hold up in court, much less the court of my armchair. Even if it conclusively proved that Sickert's DNA was on a letter that was signed "Jack the Ripper" that couldn't possibly prove that the letter writer was also the murderer.I'm very disappointed in the book as I thought it would have a much more scholarly feel to it. Probably only dedicated collectors of all things Ripper will want to read this as it probably does, at the very least, bring a few new things to light.

Patricia Cornwell's recently released Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper Case Closed claims to have brought closure to the century old Jack the Ripper murders. She stakes her claim on the innumerable number of "coincidences" tying Jack the Ripper to Walter Sickert, a famous British painter. She applies modern forensics, psychological profiling, and DNA sampling to once and for all resolve the identity of Whitechapel's infamous butcher.Throughout the book, Cornwell's talents as a best-selling fiction writer are evident. Her descriptions of 19th century culture and forensic technology are extraordinarily vivid, with a rich, story-like detail throughout. Biographical sketches, the biting taunts of the Ripper letters, and eye-witness accounts are impressively presented and bring to life the circumstances surrounding the crimes. But little is offered that will supplant a host of other theories on the actual identity of Ripper. Cornwell's logic is faulty and at times self-contradicting. Oversights are common and alternative scenarios that point away from Sickert are either unmentioned or ignored. Contrary evidence is manipulated until it somehow points back to Sickert, and the validity of every point hinges on a profane number of conjectures and speculations, few of which are supported by a single scrap of evidence.

With Ms. Cornwell's considerable forensic skills highly advertised and on display, I was expecting much more. Thus, it is an understatement to say that I was disappointed in this fictionalize non-fictional hunt for Jack the Ripper. It seems to me it did not take highly touted forensic skills to rummage through history's dustbin. Do so in a very disjointed way; throw out a few rehashed random facts and theories, and then add a few of your own -- like Walter Sickle's paintings and a concocted theory about his missing testicle or "penile or anal fistula" -- and then like magic claim them to be the holy grail and the missing link to the Ripper's murders. To her credit, Ms. Cornwell does go through the motions of building a circumstantial case. She draws on paper watermarks, on graphology and handwriting analysis, mitochondrial DNA analysis, and then delves quite extensively into Walter Sickert's eccentricities. However, this all seems to have come together in a contrived way. Sickert had been waiting in the wings all along to save the storyline. Suddenly, Sickert was trotted out just as the story was about to fall apart due to lack of any semblance of convergence. It all came together so quickly, and in such a disconnected way it left the reader the impression it had been done as a last ditched plot-saving desperate act to find a neat ending -- as a way of pulling together almost by fiat, so many disparate threads that could never come together otherwise.Maybe I was expecting too much to think that with newer forensic techniques there would be a neater more conventionally linear scientific convergence of the existing evidence. In this version, there was no convergence at all. We simply were led down one primrose path after another: all to dead-ends; and then suddenly, as if a bolt from the blue, in walks old "one nut" Walter Sickert and his paintings to save the day for Ms. Cornwell's story and presumably her reputation. Two stars

Do Dead People Watch You Shower?: And Other Questions You've Been All but Dying to Ask a Medium, by Concetta Bertoldi

From Publishers Weekly

Whether readers believe what Bertoldi has to say is a matter of choice, but the charm of this "average Jersey girl who talks to the dead" goes a long way toward making this one of the more approachable titles in the recent wave of medium-authored books. It also has a format with wide appeal, more or less cribbed from the bestselling Why Do Men Have Nipples? Instead of personal health questions, Bertoldi answers queries like "Do the dead go to ball games?" (Yes) and "How meaningful are coincidences in our lives?" (Very). The book also has a dishy element, delving into the medium's personal life (her husband's a skeptic) and a number of celebrity encounters. Though generally fun reading throughout, questions of God, heaven and other spiritual matters are met with vague language; she's similarly uninformative regarding practical matters like finding happiness or contacting the seemingly omnipresent dead. I want to thank Concetta Bertoldi for writing a informative book like this. This book was funny, informative and written well. I'm a Clairsentient also, but one that has been struggling to understand the mediumship part. I was presented with the thought to look at your books when I noticed you endorsed another medium's book that I had read for fun. I'm super glad I did. I love the humor. I also learned some things I've been struggling to understand. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, feelings and information. I have found it hard to find out some of the information you wrote about amongst medium groups. It seems a lot of mediums don't want to teach. Thank you -Blessings

Despite the fact that the answer is a disquieting yes, Concetta Betholdi is a wonderful, warm, loving believable communicator who lets us in to her own personal life big time. There's nothing more heartwarming when you're facing what feels like a catastrophic loss in your own life. The book is formatted with one important question and her answer to it per page. This makes for a welcoming entrée for people who just aren't ready for denser material. The real goal of material like this is to ease the suffering of people who feel the world has ended, but it requires such a total shift in worldview that many people can't make take the leap of faith required to gain respite, and indeed to have their eyes opened to the expansive reality that their loved ones are still there, as themselves, in the living room and what that might mean for the way they should proceed with their own lives. This book offers the best shot at opening a crack in one's believe system because of it's loving tone and format.

Since the "long Island Medium" came on TV I've picked up an interest on mediums, afterlife, etc. It's interesting to see the comparison of Concetta and Theresa. If you believe in what they say, it's a very positive and fantastic message. If you don't then you'll take this as a bunch of made up facts and will get nothing from the book. Approaching this as a objective point of view, I find it interesting the similar things both mediums say and how they work. Unless there is some sort of global collusion between mediums it does suggest they are experiencing similar things. All I can say is if you are open to the idea then this book can give you some insight. It's a Q&A format so it's not too long, and can be read quickly, too quickly I wished there was more meat to it. But nonetheless fun. I hope, sincerely hope what she says is true or close to true or just some semblance of true, if it is then all's good.

This one will truly take you along the "scenic route" to all things Dead and Watching, and not just in the shower! Better than expected, covering a lot of aspects related to her gift, client experiences, the afterlife, and a lot of life's questions with some surprising answers.Concetta's style, both candid and frank, was very pleasant, if not exciting, to read. The work is structured in an interview-style composition which pulls you into the conversation with far ranging topics related to anyone's life, or rather, everyone's soul...and sometimes about those who seem to be completely soulless.Much recommended for the Living - and a nice tribute to the Departed.Enjoy.

I found out you have a hard time putting it down !Its so easy to read, a real page turner ! And that'ssaying a lot for a non-fiction book. No wonder itsa best seller !

What happens to us after we die? Has been a question of mine ever since I became a mother. Now that I have a son, I wish I could live forever. I was once told that when we die we never get to see our loved ones again. I think that alone is punishment enough. What is the point of building bonds with our loved ones here on earth if we will never see them again. This book answered my questions and gave me peace of mind. I don't think Concetta is here to cheat us of our $ or give us false hope. She sounds sincere and seems to be speaking from the heart. Her book is an easy read. I love the question and answer style she uses for her books. Once you start reading this, you won't be able to put it down.

It is interesting. But the lady, being a celebrity, writes as .... a celebrity. So sometimes I doubt if what she writes is true. Thought this book is really good to read if you lost your loved one.

This book is a great read. Even if you are a skeptic, this book entertains. It is arranged in a question and answer format where some of the questions are serious and some are amusing. I really enjoyed reading this book. After I read one question, I would eagerly hurry to the next one. I didn't want to put the book down and even cheated by glancing ahead to see what some of the next questions were. As I read, I found myself believing that Concetta Bertoldi had a genuine ability to talk to dead people. If you believe in psychics and and afterlife, I believe this book can offer some comfort, especially if you have lost loved ones. If you are a skeptic, I still think this book is worth reading because it is really engaging and interesting, and who knows, you might even find yourself a believer after reading it.
