From School Library Journal

Gr 6 Up—Proclaimed "the greatest all-around athlete in the world" by legendary football coach Glenn "Pop" Warner, Jim Thorpe dominated sports in the early 1900s. His natural athleticism, in tandem with Warner's innovative coaching style, helped establish the Carlisle Indian Industrial School's football program as one of the nation's best, eclipsing perennial gridiron powerhouses Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. Despite the fame and attention Carlisle received because of its winning team, a stark reality existed: the cultures of these same young men were being systematically eradicated by the school (e.g., prohibiting students from speaking Native languages, forcing them to cut their hair). Operating under the premise that the "Indian problem" could be solved by stripping students of their cultural identities, Carlisle founder and superintendent Richard Henry Pratt, a U.S. Army captain, vowed to "Kill the Indian; Save the Man" through any means necessary. Sheinkin has created a rich, complex narrative that balances the institutionalized bigotry and racism of the times with the human-interest stories that are often overshadowed by or lost to history. Within this framework, he brings to life the complicated, sometimes contentious relationship between a coach and a star athlete, their rise to glory, and the legacies they left behind. VERDICT A thoroughly engrossing and extensively researched examination of football's first "all-American." Highly recommended for U.S. history collections.—Audrey Sumser, Kent State University at Tuscarawas, New Philadelphia, OH

A book for fans of Seabiscuit. Even though it's written for high school kids who don't like reading - kids like Jim Thorpe - it will tell you more about the origins of modern football (e.g. the forward pass, the single wing, the motion back) in the late 1800's and early 1900's than any book you are likely to read. It's as much about coach Pop Warner as about the great Jim Thorpe, both of whom were wandering, battered souls much like the restless, hurt souls of the great Jockey (Red Pollard) and the great trainer (Tom Smith) in Seabiscuit. It's also a book about the horrors inflicted by whites on Native Americans in schools like the Carlisle Indian School - schools designed to "civilize" Indians by taking the Indian out of them and leaving with "employable" skills that proved useless when graduates found that employers wouldn't hire Indians, skilled or otherwise. Mainly, it's a book about how uprooted Native American students at the Carlisle school, coached by a man who motivated his players to use the game of football to even score of what whites had inflicted on their people, were able over the course of many arduous seasons to finally and decisively demonstrate their superior teamwork, endurance and athletic prowess to the condescending football elites of their time: Yale, Harvard, Princeton and Penn. Handsomely produced, beautifully illustrated, fully researched with exhaustive notes and bibliography, this book is rarity in modern day publishing. Has anyone purchased the movie rights for it?

My son needed to pick a book for a report at school. He is REALLY into sports, and particularly football. He wanted to pick a sports book, so I encouraged him to find one on Jim Thorpe. He was reluctant, since he had never heard of Jim Thorpe. He read this book in five days and loved every minute of it. Hats off to Mr. Sheinkin for a well-researched book that is great reading for kids and adults alike. I'm so happy that my son now shares my admiration for this American sports legend.

Great read, having been born & raised in Oklahoma all my life it's particularly interesting to know personaly the of places of Thorpe's youth. An amazing individual who overcame great odds to become the greatest athlete in tbe 20th century.

was a gift for my grandson; he loved it

Read it in two days. It's a page turner with amazing photos. Very well researched. Thank you for writing this eye-opening book.

Amazing book. I learned so much about history and Jim Thorpe. I loved it and don't even like football. I can't believe how much I learned!

Excellent book. I was instantly drawn in and remained fully engaged throughout. It’s fair to say I could hardly put it down. It painted such a vivid portrait of Jim Thorpe and the other Carlisle Indian School Boys, at the same time it smashed through stereotypes as easily as Jim Thorpe himself ran through the line.

This book is a must read for any football fan...there were things in here I never knew concerning the origins of the game of football and how great an athlete Jim Thorpe was...really shows and brings to light some negatives as well as positives of American culture as well as some dark times in the nations history as it concerns how a whole culture of people were treated versus how they should have been treated at the turn of the 20th Century...well written book...reads like a tragedy...I highly recommend! You will learn something when you finish this book...I appreciate the authors research and honesty in the subject matter...

Forty years ago I stupidly sold my last boat. I have missed it every day since. It was my sixth and best boat, a Chrysler Lonestar. Three of these six boats I built myself, one I shared the work with my father. Building a plywood boat is a bagatelle particularly using the stitch and glue method. The seventh boat is built by this method. In the process I have bought six books from Amazon though all of the information that I needed was free on the internet. The books are “Go Build Your Own Boat” and Build The New Instant Boat by Harold Payson, “Boats with an open Mind” by Philip Bolger, “Boat Building For Beginners” by Jim Michalak, “Ultra Simple Boat Building” by Gavin Atkin and “Understanding Boat Design” by Ted Brewer There are separate reviews for each of these books.Ultra Simple Boat Building” by Gavin Atkin is an excellent book for the home builder and I give it five stars. It features 17 very complete plans and instructions for a number of small plywood boats. The diagrams and dimensions are easy to read. Adkin's designs have flotation chambers which are a great safety feature. He explains Epoxy stitch and glue and polyurethane stitch and glue. He also includes a technique called simplified chine log construction. This method places a frame member outside of the hull along the chine. Bolger used this technique in Tortoise and justified it on grounds that it made the boat easier to clean and protected the plywood chine. He believed that it was hydrodynamically satisfactory. For small slow moving displacement hulls he is probably correct. For faster powered planing hulls I have my doubts. It is not completely clear that it really simplifies the construction over say placing the chine log inside the hull in the conventional manner. No matter, the resultant boat will probably be satisfactory. Most of these boats are small and narrow with low sides and are suitable for quiet waters. I know of one individual who takes one off shore here near Los Angeles where it is paddled like a kayak. He has not yet drowned and probably will be okay. Adkin also included plans for a “Puddle Duck Racer”which would be a great choice for someone who enjoys camaraderie and mild competition. I am intrigued by “Dogsbody” which of the offerings in this book is my favorite. One should pay attention to the recommended loadings of Atkin's boats for it could be catastrophic to over load them. Adkin presents a method, not his own apparently, of building a skiff that requires no plans. I found this intriguing because I and a partner once (1953) built a boat using a very similar method. That boat was assembled using glue and light framing with brass screws. I think it cost less than $20 at the time. It saw frequent service with a 5 hp Johnson outboard and lasted at least 10 years when I lost track of it. Adkin offered a piece of simple advice. When going to the store always buy a clamp. You cannot have too many clamps. I think Norm Abrams (This Old House) once made a similar recommendation.

This book is not for the amateur boat builder looking for simple easy to understand step by step instructions. This book is confusingly written and definitely NOT for the beginning boat builder expecting to see simple step by step instructions to follow to build a boat. This is easily one of the most confusing books with unnecessary BS I have EVER read.I read the entire book and couldn’t build not one of these boats if my life depended on it.I couldn’t even do it with the help of the book because it’s that bad you turn to the pages with the actual boat designs and specifications and that’s all you get no step by step no take this and cut to this length then set to the side and take this and cut this length. None of that at all.Just numbers and figures and your supposed to just figure it out.

Not as creative as I hoped it would be.

This book belongs on the shelf of anyone who is contemplating building their own boat. This book was a special treat for me because there is a picture of a boat I built in it. The prospect of building a boat can be very overwhelming. It is a process of figuring out your needs and then deciding on an appropriate design. This is followed by determining if you have the tools, money, space, skill, and time to see a project go from a pile of wood to a pleasant afternoon sailing on a local lake with your family. If you are like me you begin this process by reading as much as you possibly can prior to actually creating sawdust. Gavin Atkin's book is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the "how" to build a boat. Although you may supplement this information with additional material from other sources, Atkin gives enough practical information to actually build a boat. Atkin makes building a boat for someone who has never done it seem very doable, even fun. The second part of the book is filled with designs to whet the appetite of anyone whois in the process of trying to decide what would would be the right boat for them. Mr. Atkin includes complete plans for seventeen of his own designs, all very doable, plus he reviews designs done by other popular designers. My boat recently succumbed to dry rot and was hauled to the dump. I am now in the process of deciding which is the "right" boat to build and Gavin Atkin's book, "Ultrasimple Boatbuilding", has renewed my interest in building my own boat again.

This is a good book to get someone started in boat building. It starts out with easy to follow explanations of the tools and techniques needed to build very simple but useful plywood boats, such as the author's "mouse" series. He outlines three different methods of assembly using, timber joints, fiberglass tape and epoxy, and polyurethane glues with open mesh type fiberglass drywall tape. With the latter two methods, the hull panels are temporarily stitched together with adhesive tape, zip ties or wire ties. He gives detailed explanations on each of these three methods. He also provides thirteen of his own designs, which include his popular "mouse" series, two powerboats, and three sailboats. The smaller "mouse" boats are probably tiny enough to tiny enough to store in an apartment, which might make them appealing for those who have no outside property to store their boats. He also shows examples from other ply boat designs, both well known, such as Bolger and Michalak, as well as less well known ones. The only quibble I have is his method drawing the various panels which make up the hull. His method, though workable (it took me some time to figure it out) is not standard in the boat building world. So, anyone who gets used to his method might be lost at sea when trying to draw panels from another designer's work.Other than that, I think it's good enough to earn a permanent place on my bookshelf.

This is the second volume of Solzhenitsyn's epic "The Red Wheel" and, unlike "August 1914", this book focuses more on Russian society than the war. A number of the same characters return from the first work and Solzhenitsyn takes them, and the reader, to the parlors of St. Petersburg, the homes of Moscow, the trenches, the schools, the factories, the farms, and the legislative assemblies. It is an astonishing work, capturing the mood in Russia before chaos consumed her and showing the last days of a failing society. There are some flaws. Solzhenitsyn continues using the "camera eye" technique that he used in the first novel and, again, does not quite succeed with it. He is better in his use of newspaper headlines than he was in "August 1914." Where he truly fails though is in the numerous essays he includes giving the history of political parties, legislative leaders, even transcripts from the Duma debates. It is a bit too much and Solzhenitsyn is not particularly subtle in his contempt for progressives and society.Where Solzhenitsyn excels is when his characters dominate the narrative. Above all, the powers of redemption and love flow through the book despite the chaos, despite the coming Soviet horror. There are scenes that remain with the reader: a priest and a young officer talking about faith in the trenches; a colonel who comes to St. Petersburg to make a major political impact only to have it undermined by his attraction to a woman, a woman going to confession crying over her dead child, a writer on a train and his assorted notes and musings. This is an epic book to be sure but Solzhenitsyn is truly incredible when he describes the intimate moments of daily life.Be warned. While the book was translated in English a decade ago, the last two volumes have yet to be translated. Despite the book going on for 1,000 pages and a difficult read, you will want more. "The Red Wheel" is not for everyone but those who pursue it will find one of the greatest novels written in the last half of the twentieth century.

Since I've never had the energy to read Trotsky (although I've read Deutscher's biography of him), this is the most detailed account I've ever read of the Russian Revolution and the circumstances that led up to it. Solzhenitsyn's main protagonist, Colonel Vorotyntsev, is a soldier on the front in the Balkans. For most of the novel he goes on leave to Moscow and Petersburg, trying to understand why the war is being managed so badly and to find the people in charge and make some improvements.Solzhenitsyn covers almost all of European Russian society in his book, from peasants in the army and on leave, up to the muddled Nicholas II. (A friend of mine who had been for many years a member of the American Communist Party, when I mentioned Solzhenitsyn, roared, "That bastard wants to bring back the Tsar." From reading this book, I think that not likely.) Rasputin, I'm vulgarly sorry to say, never makes an appearance, except as "Our Friend" in the atrocious gossipy, malicious letters that the Tsaritsa (known to all Solzhenitsyn's Russians as "Alix") writes to her husband. Solzhenitsyn--we can guess--has no sympathy for Lenin, but he attempts to get inside that man's head and life--and shows him practically as a dupe of Helphand. The Duma comes off as a useless debating society in which it is more important to top the previous speaker than to make effective change. The Kadets--short for "Constitutional Democrats"--which might have been the stable democratic center that Nabokov admired (his father was a high-ranking Kadet) come across as wishy-washy and unable to resist being opportunists pulled by the historically powerful Left (Social Democrats, and the occasional Social Revolutionary.) The only good politician in Solzhenitsyn's estimation, as far as I can tell, is Stolypin.I hope the shorthand recounting of the book's historical matters doesn't put the reader off. Here's Russian history written by an interested Russian and an undeniably great writer, and though I liked some parts of the book better than others, I was never bored by it. Nor will you be. Obviously you should read 1914 first.

This is the second in the series and although the books are long, if you love history and want to understand the Russian revolution these are for you. I recommend starting with August 1914 which vividly describes the heroism of the Russian soldier who is so miserably led into a botched invasion of Germany. Solzhenitsyn is masterful in his bringing his characters to life from soldiers enduring the horrors of WW I on the Eastern front to the revolutionaries who are slowly pulling Russia from the frying pan into the fire. I found myself flying through both books and was saddened to see them end. Looking forward to starting the final book to see how the characters I've grown so attached to wind up when the bottom finally falls out. This is the modern War and Peace.

Unless one is a professional reviewer or critic, it is hard to summarize Solzhenitsyn's second volume (of three) in the Red Wheel. (The original Russian has five volumes, the English translation is 'abridged" into three.) Reading Solzhenitsyn is like being swept along in a tidal wave of history, personal history, dramatic story, poetry, commentary, and analysis. There is no point in fighting Solzhenitsyn's surge of energy, love, and sorrow about Russia, its peoples, its history, its glory and corruption. No words of mine can convey adequately the experience of simply reading this book.it will take you some time--it's 1,000 pages long--but I thought my time was well-spent and my horizons expanded enormously.I'm sort of on a Solzhenitsyn jag right now. I've read the Gulag Archipelago, One Day in the Life, and the first volume of this trilogy. The third volume and the Cancer War are on my to-read table. I also read a good historical compilation of Solzhenitsyn's work, The Soul and Barbed Wire, which has given me some perspective on Solzhenitsyn's life and writing.

Right off the bat, if you're autistic like me and have trouble understanding idioms, this product will surely knock your socks off. There are many idiom books out there, but I heard through the grapevine that this book was the cream of the crop. Now I usually take advice like that with a grain of salt, but I'm happy I went out on a limb and buried my head in the sand with this one, because it has truly made understanding idioms a piece of cake. It's a shot in the arm to know that no longer will I be in stuck in a conversation with my autism as an albatross around my neck every time I open my mouth; I am now able to bury the hatchet with language. It's books like these that give you a leg up where genetics let you down. I highly recommend this book.

I really would LOVE to recommend this book for all of people who are learning English as a second language and hope to know English idioms. I am from Ukraine, but now I am staying in LA to learn English. I was looking for some books that could helps me to understand the meaning of idioms because sometimes it was too difficult for me to figure out what they mean. This book has more than 700 idioms with examples, meanings and origins. The origins help me to remember the idioms easier. After I read some, I finally understand why people use idioms in particular situations and I feel like I will never forget them. It may not really helpful for academic courses or daily conversation, but it is easy to read anytime and it is good for FUN! Unless I am older than twenty, this book is fun enough! And especially, this is cheaper than others. So, I'd like to say just buy and read. I am 99% sure that buying this book is going to be a good choice

I bought this book to help as I tutor a Mexican woman in English. Idioms can be the hardest thing to learn, since they don't always make sense. I wanted to be sure she understands them, even if she doesn't always have to come up with them herself. There are multiple ways to say things and she can get her message across without using idioms, but she will be at a disadvantage if she doesn't recognize them when someone else uses them.I like that the book includes 3 resources for each idiom - a definition, a use in a sentence, plus the derivation. Also, the idioms are listed in alphabetical order, so it is an easy reference. This book should make learning more fun.

My 14 yr old daughter was telling me a story the other day. My reply was, "Yeah, you don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water!" She had no idea what I was talking about. I mentioned a few other idioms, none of which she knew. I then realized I had failed as a parent in this department! I looked up books on idioms and found this book with really good reviews so I bought it. It has been so fun to have around the house and our other children refer to it often. My sister-in-law loved it so much I ordered her one too. Fun book to have just sitting on the coffee table. Highly recommend it.

I have been working with a student who has Asperger's. He has trouble with figurative language, especially idioms. This book has been a big help. There are a number of expressions that are relevant to the present-day culture and are used very often. The common sayings are listed in alphabetical order. For each selection, the idiom is presented in the context of a sentence. The meaning of the idiom is given in plain terms. Then, the origin of the idiom is given to give a historical explanation. My student is enjoying going through the book. We use this as an activity when a five minute change of pace is needed for a transition between reading comprehension activities or writing assignments. We will go through several of the idioms together. I saw a review that said that the expressions are too child-like. I don't find this to be the case at all. The vast majority of the expressions are heard in adult conversation on a regular basis.I have discovered that many children don't often use the same idioms we are familiar with from an earlier generation. They have their own lingo, but it is essential for them to be familiar with the sayings in the book. It enables them to have a broader range of expression and an expanded frame of reference when communicating with adults and gathering meaning of reading passages. My student had a blank look on his face when I would relate some of the idioms in the past. I knew it was an issue I needed to address because he is sure to encounter it as he advances in our school's high school English curriculum. This book would help out ELL students as well. They struggle to grasp idioms that we take for granted, although they communicate with intricate idiomatic expressions in their native languages. The book will also benefit students who need to spice up writing samples. Teachers like to see students paint colorful pictures with their words in descriptive narratives and much prefer it to bland narratives that are often passed in. I think this is a great resource for any educator and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

All second language teachers should have this available! Very handy, almost indispensable. This is the sixth and seventh time I have bought this book as a gift for an immigrant (usually a very highly academically accomplished one) who is totally at sea with our idioms. A gratifying response when I see the light dawn.

A great book. It will be very useful as my daughter gets older (she's only 7 now) and even I have learned a thing or two about the origin & meaning of some of the things we say! Very interesting. My only complaint is that the paper is odd. It's more like a newsprint paper than what one would typically expect to find in a reference book. Maybe this was stated in the product description and I missed, I don't know. Some people may like the feel and texture of newsprint so this could actually be a positive for some. Anyway, the book is still useful and informative, I just do not like the paper.
