As someone who began raising and butchering his own livestock several years ago, I've developed quite a library of "how to butcher" books. Most of them are quite useful and I've usually been able to take home a least a couple of "pearls" that I find useful in my private on-the-farm butchershop. Needless to say it's been quite a journey and I still have a long way to go, so it was definitely a sense of relief when I opened Mr. Farr's new instructional manual and found to my surprise loads of useful tips and ideas.The book is divided into three main parts - beef, lamb and pork. Each section begins with a clear schematic the various parts of each animal. Each schematic is then reproduced in miniature at the top of each ensuing page, keeping the reader oriented as to where in the animal the current photos originate. I for one, found this extremely usefulAnd what photos! Each one is clear, detailed and nicely laid out, accompanied by short and concise notes. It's harder than you might think to describe in words accurately how to break down an animal carcass. Believe me, I've read some other texts that leave you so confused, you don't know which end is up. Not here. Farrs descriptions are smart, pithy and to the point. Not to mention plentiful.One aspect that this book doesn't cover (nor does it claim to) is the livestock side of things. Farr assumes you will be picking up your carcass from a local butcher. He offers no advise or instruction on how to slaughter a live animal, something many of us small scale livestock farmers need. But there are other good texts for that such as The Complete Book of Butchering, Smoking, Curing, and Sausage Making: How to Harvest Your Livestock & Wild Game by Philip Hasheider. Together with Whole Beast Butchery, these two texts are all an amateur butcher needs to get started. Thanks Ryan! Great job!

Great quality book and so easy to understand.We are changing over to self sustainability, and since I have never really learned to cut meat properly other than a chicken, having control over our food is why I bought this. Plus it was too hard to keep checking this out at the library.

We have this as one of our coffee table books, and in our group of family/friends, the guys love to grill. Almost every male guest we've had has browsed through this book and talked about something they've read. It's a fun conversation starter.

The book choices the author made were some of the best I have read. I loved reading the detailed descriptions of the climbs and the climbers mighty efforts to reach the summits. Great climbs often result in great loss of a favorite climbing friend. Sharing in those efforts and losses from excepts of some of the best climbing books leaves me feeling like I had been there.

This is not as thrilling as many of the other books I have read in this genre. Each story is written in a common sort of way without a lot of details which makes them nore mundain, I found myself skipping some stories because they couldn't hold my interest. I prefer to dive into a book about one story that I can't wait to get back to.

Near Death in the Mountains is not for the squeamish!Can you imagine being stranded in an ice cave at eight thousand feet, the raging wind gusting in excess of 100 m.p.h., frostbite swelling your hands and feet so badly you can't even dress yourself, you become delirious from lack of water, and are unaware of the passage of time? These conditions can be part of the countless, serious conditions the mountain climber may encounter.Near Death in the Mountains features some stories well suited to the seasoned veteran, who can appreciate the detailed and technical accounts. (I was mostly lost.) Aspiring climbers can learn a great deal from these comprehensive and broad narratives.The book also includes accounts more suited to the adventure reader. I used this book in conjunction with Mosby's review- I like Mosby, but let me tell you something- it's very dense and tiring to study from. Kaplan's review is shorter and a much easier read- I used this book when Mosby got too overwhelming and even until right before the test- and I scored some of the highest in my class on some of the categories- So I really do recommend this book ESP for crammers like myself who need a quick fix. Overall my totalscore was about an 88% so I highly recommend this book.

I believe this book really helped me for my board exam. This was the only book I used to review for the test, it has many review quizzes, a mock board at the end, and case study tests. I was happy with my score :)

True this book does have inaccuracies, but I also found these in the much touted Dental Hygiene Study Decks. It may be impossible to find any non-fiction book without some inaccuracies, textbooks included! I've heard several questions are thrown out each year from the board exam because of inaccuracies.The information is presented thoroughly and very clearly, with key points of a paragraph in bold. Considering review books from the standpoint of having already taken (and passed!) the National Boards, I found this book and High Yield Facts Dental Hygiene (Demetra, Daskalos,Logothetis authors), to be among the most helpful. I did not have the Mosby's book, so I cannot judge where this one stands in relation to it. Kaplan was much more helpful to me than the Saunders Review.The Overview section of this book may be the most valuable and separates it from other DH review books. It provides helpful tips on how to answer certain kinds of questions on the board exam, (do you know what an "umbrella question" is and how to answer it? How about a `distractor question?') Also included: info on how the test is scored, how to prepare for the exam, and test taking strategies. This is very helpful information, as understanding how to approach a question may help you answer it correctly. The boards aren't just about knowing the correct answer, they are about knowing how to choose the correct answer from those offered. If you are not a good multiple choice test taker, or a nervous test taker, then this section of the book will be immensely helpful to you and, quite possibly worth the price of the book.I also enjoyed the uncluttered layout of the information. Everything you need to know is there, just not in twenty page, demoralizing, soul sucking, dry as the Sahara regurgitations. Excellent section review tests as well as a full length board to practice. Buy this one. You won't be sorry.

I checked out several board review books my first semester in hygiene school before I found one I wanted to buy. Most of the books were full of too much information that overwhelmed me. I have to say this book was the best book to comprehend information during school and preparing for the exam. I read the whole book during spring break and scored very high. The book is very organized and easy to read. I keep it at my office to refer to when I have questions about special needs pts or pathology. I would recommend this book to every hygiene student!

Found a few errors by p.26 (eg. cardiac is voluntary, skeletal is involuntary?!). These may be isolated instances, but I think the editor should have caught this stuff! Also, some basic biological concepts could be better explained. It's a nice concept and layout, but more images would help, and with the errors...well, as a student, I just don't trust this text to be accurate, and I don't feel I can rely on it for studying! Hopefully, the author and publisher will go back to the drawing board and make some improvements for the next edition. My school has recommended the Mosby book, and so I will stick to that.

Margot Datz is an in-demand painter, illustrator, and mural artist based in Martha's Vineyard. I wasn't sure if I could relate to this book..even though I WAS a mermaid years ago. It was a time here in theSouth when underwater shows with mermaids was popular. I enjoyed each and every page and found myselfdrifting back to a time of fantasy and not a care in the world. The author's writing and paintings were awesome.

A delightful read, beautifully illustrated. Bought two, so that I could give one as a gift and keep one. Well, I need another as I gave mine to another girlfriend. Hmmm, better buy 2 more.... this makes a gorgeous and personal “just because” gift for Landlocked Mermaids of all ages... 15-90!

Absolutely magical book, destined to be beloved by the mermaid in your life - and truth be told, in this day in age many women find themselves wondering whether they're secretly a mermaid (perhaps spurred in that direction by Tori Amos, in her Silent All These Years, perhaps by Ariel; you decide).I'd actually received this as a gift, and turned around and purchased several copies to give to others. Fun little work of art.

This guide is wonderful. Humorous and speaks volumes. A must have for Mermaids and mermaid lovers. The pictures were great, too; they really helped to get the point across.

These were a lot shorter and much more elementary than I had anticipated. They're recommended for grades 3-5 but I would say third grade would be the high end. Definitely not what I was looking for, especially when it came to cast size. Multiple narrators is just a way of padding the cast (and those kids don't get to really act - just recite) and in my book, a "sign walker" is not really a "character." The stories themselves are kind of cute but nothing special. As I wasn't looking at these for the additional activities included, which seemed more in line with the grade level recommendation, perhaps that would be a draw.

I had my third grade preform the first play and they loved it. We preformed for the parents and received a standing ovation. It helped boost reading fluency and made reading and memorizing fun for my students.

The children that teaching to read better injoyed taking on the roles of the characters.

Fun stories that are easy for elementary/middle school students to perform successfully.

Ordered these books for my third graders and they absolutely love them! We do theater week each six weeks and they love being able to create their own costumes and learn their lines, and these plays are funny and short enough for the kids to learn quickly in groups and perform. Great way to enhance their fluency and social skills!

The book came quickly and in good shape. It just wasn't what I wanted for my students. The plays were too long and each involved too many roles. I was looking for shorter plays the kids could do in small groups. I may be able to use it sometime, but it wasn't what I wanted at this particular time.

I'm a drama teacher and I use this book in my introduction courses with students between the ages of 6-12. I've used every script in the book to put on a show over the past year. I've used the exercises included to help the kids develop their characters and think about the story in a critical way...this really helped improve their performance. I think this book is excellent and would recommend it to both classroom teachers and drama teachers alike.

Community: the structure of belonging is a great resource for organizations interested in building community. A sense of community is the core of a strong organization. In a day and age where overload is the norm, time and commitment is rare and valuable. Individuals will not give of their time and commitment easily. The sense of belonging is key to engaging organizational members. This is particularly true of organizations that rely on engaged and active members to meet their goals, fulfill their purpose and grow their membership. This book is an essential resource for organizational survival and thriving. The book I ordered was a hard bound edition that was advertised as good. I just fact this edition was in near new condition. That is great because I plan on using this book as road map in building our organization. The hard bound edition will last longer and take more use/abuse. The price for this used edition was lower than a new paper bound version. This was a great value.

I decided to read "Community: The Structure of Belonging" as we strive to build better community within the retail company where I work and am responsible for training and developing our employees. As many retailers and other far-flung organizations may experience, there is sometimes an isolation and even loneliness between those employees, who may go through new-hire training centrally but then must hone their practices and results independently of their co-workers. They may pick up ideas and tips occasionally from others, but most of how they eventually perform they learn on their own. It's this situation that's motivated me to work toward an online community where our employees could start to interact with each other. My mistaken impression before I read Peter Block's book was that together we could recognize and analyze each others' ideas and practices and then legislate the "best" practices from among those.After reading the book, I am more focused on the process with which we will do all this. Focusing more on the act of gathering people together either online or in-person, we can determine the best ways for our community of far-flung employees to start working together to improve everyone's success in what we will all accomplish. To risk the use of an old cliche, Block's suggestion is that it is the journey by which we do this more so than any final best practices that we may reach at the destination. So for the original goal that I set out to accomplish in buying this book, such a focus on the ongoing conversation and the ways we are interacting with each other may prove most effective as we establish such a community within our organization.What was unexpected and a huge plus were the comments Block makes about the way our American systems (i.e., economic, political, educational, social services, media) have become and made all of us so fragmented. I've read many books over the past year that lament how our government is hopelessly partisan, our classes are hopelessly unequal, our values are maker vs. taker, etc. All of those books explain the issues but few have good solutions. Block explains the problem much more elegantly -- that our individualistic narrative; the inward attention of our institutions, corporations and our professions; and the messages from our media all work to make us feel isolated and fragmented from everyone else. He suggests that building greater community among us and reversing the path we are on now is not through government, corporations or large institutions with mandates, budgets and power to make things better. Nor will some super leaders come in with the magical strategies to finally make things better. Rather, Block is saying that we can only do that for ourselves by deciding to work with others in our communities to make things better for everyone.So, this book is more than just an academic focus on what communities can do to change things for the better. It is the opposite of what Charles Murray set out to suggest in his inflammatory book "Coming Apart." But as some critics of Block suggest, his prescription to work together is not the answer in and of itself. It is the hard work cities, organizations, school systems, social service organizations, and citizens committees all must do to change the context of what they want to accomplish, create the gatherings and structure to start accomplishing the ends that we have so long been trying to reach.

This is a wonderful book. It is a very thourough handling of community (simply, people being together and interacting in a meaningful way), and not only the need for it in society, but also how to get it and strengthen it. It can be a little technical at times- he could do a better job “putting the cookies on the bottom shelf”, but it is well worth the read. He also discusses a rich selection of resources that influenced him, for anyone who wants to go deeper. I may yet do that.I would particularly recommend this book for pastors. I strongly feel every pastor should read this. Church should be a community, not an event, and to put it bluntly, the wonderful picture this author paints of what community should look like is only possible in the Church, and the Church has a responsibility to live into that.

The restoration of community is a vital need for us today. Block suggests that the first step to community is to quit thinking of community as a problem and instead to define it as conversations -- conversations of possibility. Block sees the role of leadership as convening small groups, which he sees as the unit of transformation. In starting the conversations in these groups, the leader needs to remember that questions are more transforming than answers; curiosity more useful than advice. He explains what questions have power and what questions squelch power. He also explains how to invite people, how to facilitate accountability and ownership, and the importance of physical space for meetings and how to design it. Having dealt with these issues a long time myself, I was pleased to see some of my wisdom validated and also to learn important new wrinkles about small groups and community.

Challenged both democratic and conservative ideologies. At times perhaps a little esoteric, but nonetheless, a strong application intended to transform our ideas about what it means to be a community, to live as empowered citizens rather than "consumers", stop waiting for leaders to save us, to restore trust where it is broken and ultimately (and after a long time of hard work and persistence) end political suffering. Block makes it seem doable. Found myself getting the most out of the details. Might not be great for skimmers.

Local politicians should read this book and evaluate their approach to planning for growth. Too often a builder's association has the upper hand in influencing county and municipal planning departments. A "systems" approach is advocated in this book that looks at human needs and activity as the primary motivation for determining how to plan for population growth.

I love reading this book to my (now 2 y.o.) daughter. It has helped her to learn her colors and she asks for this book at bedtime "hockey, daddy".It has a couple colors that can be confusing to a young child (yellow/gold and purple/burgundy), but I skipped them initially to avoid unnecessary confusion. Also, the page for "silver" has a gray background so I ask my daughter what color the Stanley Cup is (silver) and then follow up to ask what the background color is (gray) to make sure she doesn't consider gray to be silver too.Overall, I love this book and the entire series, and so does my daughter. If she loves it, it deserves 5 stars.

My brother and his wife are about to have their first baby and not only are they hockey fans, but they love to read so I thought this (and all the others in this collection) would be a wonderful addition to their reading time with baby. I looked through them all and love the pictures and text. The board books are very sturdy and I think they'll hold up to lots of drooling, chewing and slamming (I have 3 boys so I know how rough they can be with books). :)

The book arrived bent from either being packaged or shipped in the mail. Still an awesome book and a great gift for expecting parents/family members and children. Has all of the hockey teams in it, so fun for everyone!

I love this series. Great for any future hockey fanatic! This title is a little dated. But it's only because of the changes in the NHL since publication. However the casual fan may not catch the differences. It's a great way to begin introducing the sport and colors to anyone.

Thick, sturdy, easy to handle pages with cool hockey illustrations. Our grandson loves it.

I love this series of books, i have 5 so far and my 18 month old loves them. The pictures are great and being a hockey family we just love the idea of each of these books. I will let all my friends know about these books.

My two year old niece loves hockey and her mom tells me she wants to read these everyday! Big clear pictures, minimal words, good for very young children learning color skills.
