I loved Choices. What a beautifully written book. This book covers so many topics. Slight age difference between the main characters. One time teacher and student period. Family drama. Then you throw in the little mysteries slinking in around some of the pages. Lyn Gardner writes another wonderful book that will stay on repeat reads list.

Another wonderful novel. I highly recommend anynof her novels that are truly wonderful to read

I eagerly awaited this book and I was not disappointed. This is a realistic love story, heart wrenching at times and glorious at times. I held by breath for Robin and her journey that had been governed by her choices and the choices of others. It was compelling enough to keep me awake all night as I absolutely needed to know how those choices played out. A great read!

A slow burning somewhat introspective romance from Lyn Gardner with a couple of sweet twist. Definitely worth your time and money.

About the Author

Legendary tattoo artist FREDDY NEGRETE is best known for his pioneering black-and-gray tattoo style, honed while serving time in a series of correctional facilities during a youth mired in abuse, gang life, and drug addiction. His "joint-style" designs eventually found their way out onto the streets of East LA and, in 1980, he created a piece that earned him a Tattoo Artist of the Year Award. After a ten-year period of renouncing his tattooing success in favor of bible study and becoming the pastor of his own church, Freddy eventually returned to tattooing in 1990 to find that he had become a tattoo superstar during the decade he had been away from the life. Freddy has been featured in the History Channel's Marked series, in the documentary Tattoo Nation, on Spike TV's Inkmaster as a guest judge, and in numerous print, online, and video publications. In 2007, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Body Art Expo, one of the biggest and most established tattoo conventions in the world. Having suffered the ravages of drug addiction for many years, Freddy is now also certified to work closely with young addicts at Beit T'Shuvah in Los Angeles, a treatment center based on Jewish spirituality and Twelve Step principles. As I watched him work I was so captivated by how he was doing my tattoo. I have two other tattoos but this was different. I feel honored to have the tattoo of my dreams done by a artist such as Freddy. After reading his book I feel grateful and humbled to have met such an authentic human being. I bought this book because I was aiming to know more about Japanese cyberpunk, and I have not read through all the essays but the ones I have read are fantastic--informative but not too dense to be readable; I was thrilled to find a measured, academic article about something usually so removed from intelligent analysis as otaku/yaoi subculture. Aside from that, the bibliographies are tremendously informative in themselves, they pointed me to many other good sources (although not all of them are in English). I like this book too for treating with such depth and breadth Japanese science fiction in general, which tends to be reduced to a few popular anime and manga. Overall this is a great (and very welcome) essay collection.

This book does a good job in providing the history of cyberpunk anime/literary works. Like other books that explore posthumanism and cyborgs, this book is good to have in your collection.

The present book is a must-read for those going into the field of research into anime, particularly SF anime, because it's got a lot of detailed and informative articles in it about the genre of anime. However, the first part on prose science fiction is more readable than the part on anime, which is laden with some highly technical and abstruse articles on the technicalities of anime (cinema) studies. Overall, a good read, but only for those at an advanced level of research.

These essays discuss Japanese Science Fiction from its origins (oddly enough in detective fiction) to the anime of today, which has produced some extraordinary innovative storylines. The editors provide an interesting introduction to the book which discusses the organization and provides a good overview. Most of the essays were published elsewhere first. Only Chapter five appears to be original, but that doesn't mean that this book is not worthwhile.The first section of this book covers the written form of Japanese Science Fiction, though the essays don't necessarily fit completely into the categories where they are placed. The first essay is by Miri Nakamura and is titled "Horror and Machines in Prewar Japan: The Mechanical Uncanny in Yumeno Kyusaku's `Dogura Magura'". This is an interesting chapter and provides insight into the use of machines in the fiction of the era. She has a wonderful discussion of how science fiction developed from detective fiction in Japan. This chapter is extremely important in seeing the origins of the genre in Japan, and one can easily see how key themes, such as the man-machine type stories have always played an important role in Japanese Science Fiction.Chapter two is "Has the Empire Sunk Yet? The Pacific in Japanese Science Fiction" by Thomas Schnellbacher. This chapter helps build on the first chapter, and discusses the important theme of identity of the Japanese people in the storylines in Japanese science fiction. This chapter is a good example of how the essays don't really fit into the sections of the book, as it discusses prose, movies, and anime and how this theme has appeared in many important works in all three. The link between this era and the loss of prestige due to the war is significant, and important in the discussion.Chapter three is "Alien Spaces and Alien Bodies in Japanese Women's Science Fiction" by Kotani Mari. This essay includes an interesting discussion on the rise of women's science fiction in Japan and how it differed from the women's movement in the west. Kotani Mari uses the transformation of the physical self as a running theme in this area of science fiction. Discussed are works like Kurimoto Kaoru's "Guin Saaga", Sato Aki's Barutazaaru No Henreki", and Takano Fumio's "Vasurafu".Chapter four is "SF as Hamlet: Science Fiction and Philosophy" by Azuma Hiroki is an unusual choice for this book, as a good portion of this essay is looking at western works both in the SF arena as well as philosophy. However, Azuma Hiroki does bring the discussion back to Japanese science fiction and the shifts which took place in the genre in Japan during that time such as the shift from literature to anime and manga.Chapter five is "Tsutsui Yasutaka and the Multimedia Performance of Authorship" by William O. Gardner. This is my personal favorite of the essays. I found the discussion of the innovative use of multimedia in the telling of a science fiction story to be incredibly interesting. Tsutsui's "Gaspard of the Morning was a newspaper-serialized novel, which incorporating feedback from the readers into the text, altering the story as it went, or so it appeared.Chapter six is "When the Machines Stop: Fantasy, Reality, and Terminal Identity in "neon Genesis Evangelion" and "Serial Experiments: Lain" by Susan J. Napier. This chapter opens the second section of the book on anime, and it is anime which is the focus of the majority of the book, including several examples in the first section. While clearly anime is the dominant form of Japanese science fiction, I would have thought there would have been more to say about the movies and manga as well. Susan Napier takes an in depth look at the anime films mentioned in the title of the essay, and it is interesting to see how they fit in with the themes which have developed over time in the genre.Chapter seven is "The Mecha's Blind Spot: "Patlabor 2" and the Phenomenology of Anime" by Christopher Bolton. This is another outstanding essay. Christopher Bolton clearly knows anime as well as "Patlabor", "Ghost in the Shell", and other works which he takes a deep dive look at some of the techniques used by the creators of these films.Chapter eight is "Words of Alienation, Words of Flight: Loanwords in Science Fiction Anime" by Naoki Chiba and Hiroko Chiba. Yet again, a wonderful look at an entirely different view of techniques used in anime, that is to say the language and what the sub-context is that goes along with the choice of words. Not being someone who speaks Japanese or has been exposed to Japanese culture to any great extent, I am not sure I would ever have picked up on this aspect by watching the anime films, and that makes this chapter one of the best for me personally.Chapter nine is "Sex and the Single Cyborg: Japanese Popular Culture Experiments in Subjectivity" by Sharalyn Orbaugh. This is another good chapter, as it takes a broader look at the subject, including providing references to Star Wars, Frankenstein, etc., which help the reader understand the topic and the comparisons being drawn. Sharalyn Orbaugh also looks at "Neon Genesis Evangelion" and "Ghost in the Shell" to help illustrate the discussion of sexuality and singularity which are important in these films.Chapter 10 is "Invasion of the Woman Snatchers: The Problem of A-Life and the Uncanny in "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" by Livia Monnet. This essay takes an in depth look at the first fully computer-animated "photorealistic" feature film, and presents the view that it represents a turning point in the industry. It is an interesting discussion, though I am not sure I buy into the premise.The last chapter is titled "Otaku Sexuality" by Saito Tamaki. This chapter looks at a type of fan which is unique to Japan and Japanese Science Fiction, and so it isn't directly about Anime even though it is placed in that section of the book. The otaku are shunned by some Japanese, for some reasons which Saito Tamaki discusses, and also discussed in great detail is the reality behind this group and myths are laid to rest. This is an interesting psychological analysis of a type of Science Fiction fan (though not all otaku are fans of science fiction), but I am not sure it tells us much about the genre any more than a study of types of fans in the U.S. would tell us about American Science Fiction. At the same time, it does provide a different perspective from which to view the genre.Takayuki Tatsumi provides a nice afterword titled "A Very Soft Time Machine: From Translation to Transfiguration" in which he discusses the essays and how they relate as well as his own personal reflections on the subject.Ultimately this is a very good book, and I am rounding up to five stars for the rating. I would have liked to see a few more essays, taking a look at some additional areas, such as manga and the non-anime movies in particular. However, what information is provided is excellent, and it is nice that they were able to bring this series of essays from different sources together in one place.

This is the second Lucky fashion book that I've purchased. The other is The Lucky Guide to Mastering Any Style: How to Wear Iconic Looks and Make Them Your Own and it is much more helpful. In that book, common styles are identified and recommendations are given for "essential" pieces for women who want to build that look. In this book, no individual styles or lifestyles are considered -- in trying to be for everyone, the generality assures that this book won't be helpful for anyone.There are a handful of useful tips, but there is no guidance on building an actual wardrobe. There are recommendations on what to own, but they jump back between the slightly stingy (only six tops to wear to work) to the extravagant (I don't need multiple cocktail/evening dresses and I don't need multiple coats).

I purchased this book in 2005 shortly after I graduated from college when, in a panic, I realized my wardrobe consisted of jeans, jeans, and more jeans. I've always heard growing up that women should invest in staple pieces but I pretty much took that to mean: (1) buy a pair of black slacks, (2) buy one crisp white shirt, and (3) buy a pair of sensible black flats. Still, I really had no idea how to be fashionable and how not to stress over what to wear each morning. This book has helped me out over the years and I still find it useful almost seven years later!There are some caveats you should be aware of. This book doesn't account for modern shopping trends and considering it was first published in 2003, there is going to be some disparity between what was considered in back then and what is considered in now. For example, the authors consider ballet flats to be difficult to wear but they are super hot right now in 2012. There is almost no discussion about tights or leggings and some of us could use some help in that department. Accessories are also very lightly mentioned in the book. There is a chapter on bags and shoes but nothing on jewelry, although some examples are given throughout the book. And as some other reviewers mentioned, the bra fitting advice is wrong.Despite those issues, this book is fabulous. Each chapter starts with a page of photographs of the variations of that item. In the first chapter, Skirts, there are photographs depicting different types of skirt such as pleated, pencil, plaid, tiered, asymmetrical, a-line, and so on. It's great to have a visual of what those terms mean (I never knew what a pencil skirt was!). The authors then give you fit and styling tips, illustrating how best to flatter your body and what to avoid when wearing that particular item. There are illustrations (not photographs) that tell you what to wear if you want to highlight or take attention away from certain parts of your body.The best part for me is what follows, a visual list of how many and of how many items you need to build your closet. In the Skirts chapter it says to have two all-season work skirts, one day-to-night skirt, two summer work skirts, one denim skirt and two summer work skirts. Some chapters give additional suggestions based on your lifestyle or style preferences. Next the authors show you how a piece can be worn in different seasons or from weekday to weekend, day to evening. There are also suggestions for how to vamp up your style and try something new (the suggestions here may be out of fashion but the essence is the same). They follow up with an illustration of how not to wear the piece and how to remedy the look you are going for.At the end of each chapter there is a page called Fitting Room, which describes what to look for when you're buying the item in a store. Suggestions like walking around in the piece, sitting down, fastening all the buttons, etc... these are things to be mindful of when purchasing items for your wardrobe. I know I like to just pick things off the rack and head to the counter to purchase for them but it's nice to be reminded that one should pay attention to fit and movement of the pieces.Overall I really like the book. It's visually pleasing to look through and it's a fairly quick read as well. The authors do include a list of twenty items we should splurge on and they are all classic pieces that everyone should have in their closet. Also note, some of the books have different covers but the contents are the same. I have the one with the gorgeous red Rafe bag on the cover and love it. So yes, be mindful that the fashion may be outdated in parts but the advice and the classic pieces highlighted in the book are a mainstay. If you want to build a wardrobe, you need this book!

I'm about halfway through this book and I can tell I will add it to my collection for sure!! I love the way they separate categories, name everything, and suggest amounts for every woman. Very happy with this book, recommend highly. Lots of pics and easy to understand and read.Update: I finished the book, and can highly recommend it as there are thousands of great tips on dressing and cosmetics.

This book scored 4 stars for me because:* It gives straightforward, practical shopping and fashion advice.* The presentation of the outfits a la Chic Simple (clothes, shoes, accessories, by themselves minus a person modeling them) are elegant in my opinion* The book gives you an idea of which staples of item (skirt, tops, shoes, etc) to own to keep you covered and which ones to add if you already have the basics* A lot of the outfits presented are actually chic and wearable by most everyone. Options on a per season basis are presented too.* The color combinations of the outfits are also great. While the book shows outfits in timeless neutral-and-color combinations, there are also color-color combinations that do not overwhelm.* The book also shows outfits in interesting mixes of textures as well as prints.* The sections on packing for a three-day trip, streamlining your wardrobe, and rules of shopping are good bonuses too.The following are the reasons why my rating is one star away from the perfect rating:* I've been a fan of their magazine for years now, and I must say that I've already seen some of the featured clothes in the book in previous issues of the magazines* The pieces of advice on fit are ok, but Christa Weil's Secondhand Chic gives a more comprehensive advice on this topic. Both visual and feel cues are discussed in detail in that book. Secondhand Chic also offers advice on how to make the most out of one's figure which would complement those of Lucky Shopping Manual's.* They could also do a separate section on shirts next time instead of integrating it in the Tops section.* Perhaps they could also feature sections on watches and jewelry.
