About the Author
Legendary tattoo artist FREDDY NEGRETE is best known for his pioneering black-and-gray tattoo style, honed while serving time in a series of correctional facilities during a youth mired in abuse, gang life, and drug addiction. His "joint-style" designs eventually found their way out onto the streets of East LA and, in 1980, he created a piece that earned him a Tattoo Artist of the Year Award. After a ten-year period of renouncing his tattooing success in favor of bible study and becoming the pastor of his own church, Freddy eventually returned to tattooing in 1990 to find that he had become a tattoo superstar during the decade he had been away from the life. Freddy has been featured in the History Channel's Marked series, in the documentary Tattoo Nation, on Spike TV's Inkmaster as a guest judge, and in numerous print, online, and video publications. In 2007, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Body Art Expo, one of the biggest and most established tattoo conventions in the world. Having suffered the ravages of drug addiction for many years, Freddy is now also certified to work closely with young addicts at Beit T'Shuvah in Los Angeles, a treatment center based on Jewish spirituality and Twelve Step principles. Freddy lives in Hollywood with his son Isaiah, who is also a successful tattoo artist. It took me two days to finish this book. This book had a profound effect on me. I cried, I smiled, I read parts that I completely identified with. The main feeling I have after reading this book is a better understanding of life. This book was inspiring. It's funny I had no clue about Freddy Negrete. When I met him I Immediately liked him. As I watched him work I was so captivated by how he was doing my tattoo. I have two other tattoos but this was different. I feel honored to have the tattoo of my dreams done by a artist such as Freddy. After reading his book I feel grateful and humbled to have met such an authentic human being. This is the second Lucky fashion book that I've purchased. The other is The Lucky Guide to Mastering Any Style: How to Wear Iconic Looks and Make Them Your Own and it is much more helpful. In that book, common styles are identified and recommendations are given for "essential" pieces for women who want to build that look. In this book, no individual styles or lifestyles are considered -- in trying to be for everyone, the generality assures that this book won't be helpful for anyone.There are a handful of useful tips, but there is no guidance on building an actual wardrobe. There are recommendations on what to own, but they jump back between the slightly stingy (only six tops to wear to work) to the extravagant (I don't need multiple cocktail/evening dresses and I don't need multiple coats).
I purchased this book in 2005 shortly after I graduated from college when, in a panic, I realized my wardrobe consisted of jeans, jeans, and more jeans. I've always heard growing up that women should invest in staple pieces but I pretty much took that to mean: (1) buy a pair of black slacks, (2) buy one crisp white shirt, and (3) buy a pair of sensible black flats. Still, I really had no idea how to be fashionable and how not to stress over what to wear each morning. This book has helped me out over the years and I still find it useful almost seven years later!There are some caveats you should be aware of. This book doesn't account for modern shopping trends and considering it was first published in 2003, there is going to be some disparity between what was considered in back then and what is considered in now. For example, the authors consider ballet flats to be difficult to wear but they are super hot right now in 2012. There is almost no discussion about tights or leggings and some of us could use some help in that department. Accessories are also very lightly mentioned in the book. There is a chapter on bags and shoes but nothing on jewelry, although some examples are given throughout the book. And as some other reviewers mentioned, the bra fitting advice is wrong.Despite those issues, this book is fabulous. Each chapter starts with a page of photographs of the variations of that item. In the first chapter, Skirts, there are photographs depicting different types of skirt such as pleated, pencil, plaid, tiered, asymmetrical, a-line, and so on. It's great to have a visual of what those terms mean (I never knew what a pencil skirt was!). The authors then give you fit and styling tips, illustrating how best to flatter your body and what to avoid when wearing that particular item. There are illustrations (not photographs) that tell you what to wear if you want to highlight or take attention away from certain parts of your body.The best part for me is what follows, a visual list of how many and of how many items you need to build your closet. In the Skirts chapter it says to have two all-season work skirts, one day-to-night skirt, two summer work skirts, one denim skirt and two summer work skirts. Some chapters give additional suggestions based on your lifestyle or style preferences. Next the authors show you how a piece can be worn in different seasons or from weekday to weekend, day to evening. There are also suggestions for how to vamp up your style and try something new (the suggestions here may be out of fashion but the essence is the same). They follow up with an illustration of how not to wear the piece and how to remedy the look you are going for.At the end of each chapter there is a page called Fitting Room, which describes what to look for when you're buying the item in a store. Suggestions like walking around in the piece, sitting down, fastening all the buttons, etc... these are things to be mindful of when purchasing items for your wardrobe. I know I like to just pick things off the rack and head to the counter to purchase for them but it's nice to be reminded that one should pay attention to fit and movement of the pieces.Overall I really like the book. It's visually pleasing to look through and it's a fairly quick read as well. The authors do include a list of twenty items we should splurge on and they are all classic pieces that everyone should have in their closet. Also note, some of the books have different covers but the contents are the same. I have the one with the gorgeous red Rafe bag on the cover and love it. So yes, be mindful that the fashion may be outdated in parts but the advice and the classic pieces highlighted in the book are a mainstay. If you want to build a wardrobe, you need this book!
I'm about halfway through this book and I can tell I will add it to my collection for sure!! I love the way they separate categories, name everything, and suggest amounts for every woman. Very happy with this book, recommend highly. Lots of pics and easy to understand and read.Update: I finished the book, and can highly recommend it as there are thousands of great tips on dressing and cosmetics.
This book scored 4 stars for me because:* It gives straightforward, practical shopping and fashion advice.* The presentation of the outfits a la Chic Simple (clothes, shoes, accessories, by themselves minus a person modeling them) are elegant in my opinion* The book gives you an idea of which staples of item (skirt, tops, shoes, etc) to own to keep you covered and which ones to add if you already have the basics* A lot of the outfits presented are actually chic and wearable by most everyone. Options on a per season basis are presented too.* The color combinations of the outfits are also great. While the book shows outfits in timeless neutral-and-color combinations, there are also color-color combinations that do not overwhelm.* The book also shows outfits in interesting mixes of textures as well as prints.* The sections on packing for a three-day trip, streamlining your wardrobe, and rules of shopping are good bonuses too.The following are the reasons why my rating is one star away from the perfect rating:* I've been a fan of their magazine for years now, and I must say that I've already seen some of the featured clothes in the book in previous issues of the magazines* The pieces of advice on fit are ok, but Christa Weil's Secondhand Chic gives a more comprehensive advice on this topic. Both visual and feel cues are discussed in detail in that book. Secondhand Chic also offers advice on how to make the most out of one's figure which would complement those of Lucky Shopping Manual's.* They could also do a separate section on shirts next time instead of integrating it in the Tops section.* Perhaps they could also feature sections on watches and jewelry.
