As someone who began raising and butchering his own livestock several years ago, I've developed quite a library of "how to butcher" books. Most of them are quite useful and I've usually been able to take home a least a couple of "pearls" that I find useful in my private on-the-farm butchershop. Needless to say it's been quite a journey and I still have a long way to go, so it was definitely a sense of relief when I opened Mr. Farr's new instructional manual and found to my surprise loads of useful tips and ideas.The book is divided into three main parts - beef, lamb and pork. Each section begins with a clear schematic the various parts of each animal. Each schematic is then reproduced in miniature at the top of each ensuing page, keeping the reader oriented as to where in the animal the current photos originate. I for one, found this extremely usefulAnd what photos! Each one is clear, detailed and nicely laid out, accompanied by short and concise notes. It's harder than you might think to describe in words accurately how to break down an animal carcass. Believe me, I've read some other texts that leave you so confused, you don't know which end is up. Not here. Farrs descriptions are smart, pithy and to the point. Not to mention plentiful.One aspect that this book doesn't cover (nor does it claim to) is the livestock side of things. Farr assumes you will be picking up your carcass from a local butcher. He offers no advise or instruction on how to slaughter a live animal, something many of us small scale livestock farmers need. But there are other good texts for that such as The Complete Book of Butchering, Smoking, Curing, and Sausage Making: How to Harvest Your Livestock & Wild Game by Philip Hasheider. Together with Whole Beast Butchery, these two texts are all an amateur butcher needs to get started. Thanks Ryan! Great job!

The book choices the author made were some of the best I have read. I loved reading the detailed descriptions of the climbs and the climbers mighty efforts to reach the summits. Great climbs often result in great loss of a favorite climbing friend. Sharing in those efforts and losses from excepts of some of the best climbing books leaves me feeling like I had been there.
This is not as thrilling as many of the other books I have read in this genre. Each story is written in a common sort of way without a lot of details which makes them nore mundain, I found myself skipping some stories because they couldn't hold my interest. I prefer to dive into a book about one story that I can't wait to get back to.
Near Death in the Mountains is not for the squeamish!Can you imagine being stranded in an ice cave at eight thousand feet, the raging wind gusting in excess of 100 m.p.h., frostbite swelling your hands and feet so badly you can't even dress yourself, you become delirious from lack of water, and are unaware of the passage of time? I used this book in conjunction with Mosby's review- I like Mosby, but let me tell you something- it's very dense and tiring to study from. Kaplan's review is shorter and a much easier read- I used this book when Mosby got too overwhelming and even until right before the test- and I scored some of the highest in my class on some of the categories- So I really do recommend this book ESP for crammers like myself who need a quick fix. Overall my totalscore was about an 88% so I highly recommend this book.
I believe this book really helped me for my board exam. This was the only book I used to review for the test, it has many review quizzes, a mock board at the end, and case study tests. I was happy with my score :)
True this book does have inaccuracies, but I also found these in the much touted Dental Hygiene Study Decks. It may be impossible to find any non-fiction book without some inaccuracies, textbooks included! I've heard several questions are thrown out each year from the board exam because of inaccuracies.The information is presented thoroughly and very clearly, with key points of a paragraph in bold. Considering review books from the standpoint of having already taken (and passed!) the National Boards, I found this book and High Yield Facts Dental Hygiene (Demetra, Daskalos,Logothetis authors), to be among the most helpful. I did not have the Mosby's book, so I cannot judge where this one stands in relation to it. Kaplan was much more helpful to me than the Saunders Review.The Overview section of this book may be the most valuable and separates it from other DH review books. It provides helpful tips on how to answer certain kinds of questions on the board exam, (do you know what an "umbrella question" is and how to answer it? How about a `distractor question?') Also included: info on how the test is scored, how to prepare for the exam, and test taking strategies. This is very helpful information, as understanding how to approach a question may help you answer it correctly. The boards aren't just about knowing the correct answer, they are about knowing how to choose the correct answer from those offered. If you are not a good multiple choice test taker, or a nervous test taker, then this section of the book will be immensely helpful to you and, quite possibly worth the price of the book.I also enjoyed the uncluttered layout of the information. Everything you need to know is there, just not in twenty page, demoralizing, soul sucking, dry as the Sahara regurgitations. Excellent section review tests as well as a full length board to practice. Buy this one. You won't be sorry.
I checked out several board review books my first semester in hygiene school before I found one I wanted to buy. Most of the books were full of too much information that overwhelmed me. I have to say this book was the best book to comprehend information during school and preparing for the exam. I read the whole book during spring break and scored very high. The book is very organized and easy to read. I keep it at my office to refer to when I have questions about special needs pts or pathology. I would recommend this book to every hygiene student!
Found a few errors by p.26 (eg. cardiac is voluntary, skeletal is involuntary?!). These may be isolated instances, but I think the editor should have caught this stuff! Also, some basic biological concepts could be better explained. It's a nice concept and layout, but more images would help, and with the errors...well, as a student, I just don't trust this text to be accurate, and I don't feel I can rely on it for studying! Hopefully, the author and publisher will go back to the drawing board and make some improvements for the next edition. My school has recommended the Mosby book, and so I will stick to that.

These were a lot shorter and much more elementary than I had anticipated. They're recommended for grades 3-5 but I would say third grade would be the high end. Definitely not what I was looking for, especially when it came to cast size. Multiple narrators is just a way of padding the cast (and those kids don't get to really act - just recite) and in my book, a "sign walker" is not really a "character." The stories themselves are kind of cute but nothing special. As I wasn't looking at these for the additional activities included, which seemed more in line with the grade level recommendation, perhaps that would be a draw.
I had my third grade preform the first play and they loved it. We preformed for the parents and received a standing ovation. It helped boost reading fluency and made reading and memorizing fun for my students.
The children that teaching to read better injoyed taking on the roles of the characters.
Fun stories that are easy for elementary/middle school students to perform successfully.
Ordered these books for my third graders and they absolutely love them! We do theater week each six weeks and they love being able to create their own costumes and learn their lines, and these plays are funny and short enough for the kids to learn quickly in groups and perform. Great way to enhance their fluency and social skills!
The book came quickly and in good shape. It just wasn't what I wanted for my students. The plays were too long and each involved too many roles. I was looking for shorter plays the kids could do in small groups. I may be able to use it sometime, but it wasn't what I wanted at this particular time.
I'm a drama teacher and I use this book in my introduction courses with students between the ages of 6-12. I've used every script in the book to put on a show over the past year. I've used the exercises included to help the kids develop their characters and think about the story in a critical way...this really helped improve their performance. I think this book is excellent and would recommend it to both classroom teachers and drama teachers alike.
