Excellent translation of very important early texts. Nice, brief introductions to each text, as well as a few explanatory notes on obscure sayings or references. There were quite a few typos, obviously indicating that whatever software was used to convert the original written form into electronic text needs to be checked. I noted and sent in about 20 such errors as I read the book.As far as the content is concerned, these are must read texts for Christians, especially in the West. They provide a peek into what Christianity originally was...not what it has become as reflected in modern Evangelicalism. I think that there is no true Christan who can read these works and not be convicted and challenged. After reading this I'm moving on to Eusebius's 'Ecclesiastical History' in the hope of more completely filling in the picture of Christ's Church in its earliest days. I'm finding that there is a profundity and treasure in the old that simply has been lost in most quarters of the Church today. I'm also beginning to wonder if the reason that there are not many martyrs in the West, is because there is not much actual Christianity. Surely the residual peace from a now waining Christian culture is partly the reason (and something to be thankful for!), but deep down, I think many professing Christians struggle with the thought of actually living and rendering this kind of ultimate witness to Christ. And, I think that this is because so many haven't actually found the living Christ or are not sure about their own individual faith (another matter for another time).Reading the writings of these first post-Apostolic Fathers is to enter a world of belief and confidence of faith that speaks of truly knowing Christ as the resurrected Lord of all the earth. These men--these martyrs--knew Him and the power of His resurrection, thus desiring to be conformed to Him even in His death. There is nothing here that resembles the "your best life now", "Blessed!" type religion that passes for Christianity in today's affluent West. This is a raw look at the true Church of the Savior of the world. Read it and be ready to be rocked. Read it and be ready to be edified and roused and surprised by a depth of faith that you (or at least some of us) have not yet experienced.

Decidedly Protestant slant to this translation. I read multiple translations by others from all sorts of backgrounds and this particular version adds words no on else does in order to fit the particular theology of the translator.

This anthology of several of the early apostolic fathers epistles and other writings provides a window into early Christianity that will delight the lay reader and remind the curious of the basic foundations of Christian dogma and theology. Included in the anthology are the epistles of Ignatius of Antioch, Polycarp, Clement of Rome, The Epistle of Barnabas, the Didache, the Martyrdom of Polycarp and others. Before each major element, the editor provides the reader with a brief biography and theological and historical context for the work, as well as extensive and interesting end notes.I will concur with several of the other reviewers that there are other writings, such as the Shepard of Hermas, that are perhaps even more poignant and valuable in a study of early Christian writing, however, this collection is excellent and belongs in any library where this subject or similar subjects are contemplated and studied.

This is a wonderful collection of early Christian writings. The notes and introductions are helpful, and Staniforth gives a great translation (as he does for Penguin's edition of the "Meditations.") I wish that 2nd Clement and the Shepherd of Hermas were included. I own both the paperback and the kindle version. The paperback would receive 5 stars, but there are some errors in the kindle version that are quite distracting (though some are consistent.) Consider the following: "love first the Lard thy creator", "in quiet submission to Hun" (these are two common errors) as well as some others: "we ought surely txo detect...", "m my sight", "the hope of as all", or "who did not sin, neither VMS guile found in his mouth."These are just a few. There are many, and while you can usually figure out the meaning, the mistakes are distracting.

It is a nice little book to have, but the translator takes a different view on the text than the Lightfoot/Holmes one. There are a number of places where the translator's choice gives a noticeably different reading. For instance, in I Clement he translates Clement has saying that the Christians should "Clothe [them]selves in mutual tolerance of one another's views" whereas the Lightfoot/Holmes translation reads "Let us clothe ourselves in concord." This made me want to just go with the Lightfoot translation, as this one is taking liberties. However, this one does read much easier: the language is more modern, the footnotes are more interesting, and there are summaries of each letter in the beginnings of each.Lastly, as others have noted, there are some key works missing from the collection.

I found this book to be invigorating and inspiring. The idea is amazing to know that the new testament are not the only writings we have from the early church in the new testament. What if I told you we have writings from the followers of Paul? What if it were the followers of Paul addressed to the same Corinthian church in the new testament? It is the case. What if I told you we have the writings of the Apostle John direct disciples? These writings are just that; with a handful of other jewels from the infant church. In my humble opinion, I do not feel this book is only for the man going through seminary, or getting his degree in the early church. This is a book that every Christian (and non-Christian) should read to understand what the infant church was like in the first several centuries.

Book reinforces Catholic Tradition that does not appear in the Bible but never the less shows the early structure of The Christian Church. The problems it faced to preserve the orthoxy of Christ's being and teachings as transmitted by the original Apostles to their successors.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of July 2018: The trials of parenthood are known to all: the sleepless nights, the teething, and the tantrums. In Baby Teeth, mom Suzette faces an additional trial: a young daughter, Hanna, who makes Wednesday Addams look positively angelic. Hanna is besotted with her father and violently opposed to sharing him with her mother. Withdrawn, refusing to speak, she’s waging a campaign of terror with Suzette as the prime target. But, apart from issues at school that Dad is able to excuse away, he sees no evidence of the terror his wife reports and stands ready to defend his silent angel, even against her mom. It’s the classic bad seed setup, but author Zoje Stage ups the ante, using alternating chapters to devastating effect. The swings from Suzette's panicked attempts to right the ship and fix her daughter to Hanna's chilling interior monologues drive much of the suspense in this creepy thriller. And the alternating chapter setup allows Hanna the last words, words which left me open-mouthed. Ever wanted to shout, “He’s behind you!” at a horror movie in a theater? Well, Baby Teeth may leave you wanting to howl something similar at the pages of a book. —Vannessa Cronin

Named one of “Summer 2018’s Must-Read Mysteries & Thrillers” by Bookish “Unnerving and unputdownable, BABY TEETH will get under your skin and keep you trapped in its chilling grip until the shocking conclusion.” ―New York Times bestselling author Lisa Scottoline“Propulsive.” ―The New York Times Book Review“You might want to cover your eyes.” ―Entertainment Weekly, “The Must List”“A deliciously creepy read.” ―New York Post“Baby Teeth is a mesmerizing thriller that effectively taps into deep-seated anxieties that any parent will find uncomfortably familiar. Hard to put down and harder to forget, the book will delight readers looking for an escape over the summer.” ―Pittsburgh Post-Gazette“A stay-at-home mom desperately tries to connect with her mute 7-year-old daughter, whose disturbing behavior continues to escalate in this gripping debut novel from an indie screenwriter.” ―InStyle“We bet that parents will find this novel particularly unsettling.” ―Bookish“Deliciously creepy…the author keeps the suspense taut…offering a terrifying glimpse into the inner thoughts of a budding sociopath.” ―Library Journal (starred)“Tightly plotted, expertly choreographed.... Stage palpably conveys Suzette's fear, anger, frustration, and desperation while exploring the deleterious effects that motherhood can have on one's marriage and self-worth. ...Stage fuses horror with domestic suspense to paint an unflinching portrait of childhood psychopathy and maternal regret.” ―Kirkus (starred)"Stage’s deviously fun debut takes child-rearing anxiety to demented new heights. Stage expertly crafts this creepy, can’t-put-it-down thriller into a fearless exploration of parenting and marriage that finds the cracks in unconditional love." ―Publishers Weekly (starred)“A totally engaging and unnerving read. Debut novelist Stage has convincingly created one of the youngest villains ever, and readers will be unable to resist the urge to meet Hanna.” ―Booklist“Zoje Stage’s Baby Teeth is cunning, sharp, and nasty, and wickedly funny until it isn’t funny anymore. This intelligent, unrelenting, layered shocker can stand proudly alongside classics like The Other and The Butcher Boy, with their ‘evil’ children uncannily reflecting our own sins.” ―Paul Tremblay, nationally bestselling author of A Head Full of Ghosts and The Cabin at the End of the World“Every time we read the premise of Baby Teeth, all the hair on the back of our neck stands up. Simply put, it’s about a sweet little girl who wants to kill her mother. And it. Is. Bonkers. Do you have goosebumps yet?” ―HelloGiggles“Imagine WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN only with insight into what Kevin was thinking―and if Eva had fought back. This dark, terrifying novel unfolds as a battle of wits between a struggling mother and her psychotic young daughter―and its genius is that the reader’s allegiance isn’t allowed to linger too long on either side. You’ll be desperate to discuss the ending once you’ve recovered from the shock of it. A must-read.” ―Catherine Ryan Howard, USA Today bestselling author of Distress Signals"'Maybe it had been a mistake, trying to set Mommy on fire.'―Yeah, it's that kind of book―and oh, is it good! Don't miss this riveting debut by a stunning new voice in horror!"―J.D. Barker, International Bestselling Author of The Fourth Monkey and Dracul“Baby Teeth is electrifyingly creepy. It calls to mind the great monster children of The Fifth Child or We Need to Talk About Kevin, but has a devilish tension all its own. Twisted, playful, and deeply unsettling, Zoje Stage's debut announces her as a new voice worth celebrating.”―Colin Winnette, author of The Job of the Wasp“Baby Teeth is deeply unsettling in the best possible way. Absolutely unforgettable and unflinching, it digs right into the painful nerve of family, obligation and dependence―it's a hell of a debut.” ―Kelly Braffet, author of Save Yourself

Well, here's a kid who brings out the worst in her parents. I read this book in one uninterrupted go and then deleted it so it wouldn't haunt my ipad. the mother and daughter main characters are well developed and believeable, and it's fascinating to understand, along with the mom, the gradual dawning of this kid's psychosis/sociopathy...or whatever her problem is. A terrific read, kudos to the editor.

Last night I watched a remake of The Bad Seed on Lifetime TV. About 30 minutes into the movie, I rolled my eyes at how shallow the plot was and turned it off. This afternoon I began reading Baby Teeth and couldn’t believe how similar the plot was to the movie, The Bad Seed, and how equally terrible it was! There is nothing original about this timeworn story about a demonic child who is out to get rid of her mother in order to have Daddy all to herself! I could kick myself for falling victim to those reviews that guaranteed a shocking twist at the end of the story - spoiler alert...there was none. This book was compared to Gone Girl but is absolutely nothing like it; the characters are so underdeveloped that I found myself skipping to the end after reading only 4 chapters. The ending was not only predictable, but frustrating because the reader gets the idea that there could be a sequel! Now that would be my worst nightmare!

A not so bright mom who doesn't think to use the record feature on her phone, and a not so smart dad who can't see what's going on. And a no-ending ending.

I’ll never forget reading Lionel Shriver’s, “We Need to Talk About Kevin”, when it debuted in 2003. I’d never read anything like it, and I was at once enthralled and revolted. I also became forevermore enamored of the “unreliable narrator”, and seek them out wherever I can. “Baby Teeth”, the debut by Zoje Stage, has been widely compared to Shriver’s novel, due to the subject matter, but there the similarities end.Is seven year old Hanna a sociopath, psychopath, psychotic, neurotic, or possessed? Are her parents clueless, self-involved, and delusional? It’s easy to keep reading to try to find out, but it feels like so much “empty calories”.“Baby Teeth” has been widely hyped, and I kept waiting for a bombshell, but there isn’t one. It describes an Electra Complex on steroids, and none of the main characters are remotely likeable or sympathetic. It does address mental illness eventually, in a no-nonsense and practical way that is helpful for general awareness, and in that there is a public service done here.

Wow! What a book! The GOOD:1. I could not put this book down. The story was so totally engrossing, I read it in one day...in between chores and a million other activities.2. As an RN, I was terribly impressed by the author's familiarity and expertise of Crohn's disease. Her medical knowledge was impressive, although I'm still not entirely certain what role the disease actually played in the book. I kept waiting for it to become clear, but it never really did. It seemed more educational than entertaining.3. While I'd ultimately classify this more as a family drama than a thriller, the characters were so well fleshed out, they felt very real. As a homeschooling mother myself, I could empathize with Suzette's frustrations. The BAD:1. The writing was odd. There were periods and capital letters all throughout the story where there simply shouldn't be. An example--“So … We have to make things better. Between us. I’m sorry if I pushed you too fast. I wish you could understand. School, and how important it is. If we’re together so much and I’m teaching you at home … And what you really need is other people." (page 225 on Kindle)There are so many grammatical errors in those few sentences! It was terribly distracting, and it happened again and again throughout the novel.2. I realize Hanna was supposed to be a 7-year old genius, but her thoughts, and those of her mother, were indistinguishable. Had the chapter headings not identified whose perspective I was reading, I wouldn't have been able to tell. No 7-year old, genius or otherwise, has thought processes like those Hanna was having. Her voice was that of a worldly adult. It was my one main gripe about Baby Teeth.3. Alex's inability to see Hanna for what she truly was was beyond annoying. I honestly felt sorry for Suzette throughout 90% of the book, having to deal with a husband who disregarded her at every turn, and allowed Hanna to undermine her authority. He was a very weak man.The UGLY:1. There is only one point to be made in this category, but I feel it encompasses the essence of the story. For the most part, I found Suzette to be a sympathetic character--she's a woman dealing with a chronic (and potentially body deforming) illness, a husband who disregards and undermines everything she says, a child who hates everything about her and wants to eliminate her from their family, and a career put on the back burner. Yet, there is a sense throughout the novel that Suzette's deepest, darkest, wholeheartedly negative feelings about her child, and motherhood, were made very clear to Hanna during her formative years. Children are very intuitive and can easily pick up on those energies. The conclusion was shocking...at least to the mother in me, but it was very, very well done. And can we just talk about the amazing book cover and even more amazing title for a minute? Because they're both pure perfection.4.25 well-earned stars!

Review contains spoilers.I felt I had read a similar story before, and I have. But I was more bothered by the abrupt ending. It was as if the author copied the plot but couldn't find a unique ending. I literally went back thinking I had skipped pages.

I loved this book! I don’t know any Mom’s that haven’t let that loving mask slip when being tested by their child, especially when a child is deliberately being irritating. It was interesting to see it from the child’s point of view, though this child was a bad combination of smart and vindictive. I hope there is another one after Hanna fakes her way out of the school.

I love dark and scary reads - LOVE them. But this book is something else beyond dark/scary. I am finding I can read it in increments - and I must go that way because it was so unnerving. As to the child, all I could think of was those "demon kids" that were prevalent in fiction a while ago ("Damien" for example).I had to say any book "creeped me out," so I'm determined to read this through. I'm now at the part involving medicine tampering (oh no) so I just had to put it down for a while ... BUT I will be back.I actually have rated it 4 STARS because the writing is realistic and original and the author did quite a remarkable job of creating the scares. So If you can manage it, here's a book that presents a true creepiness challenge for you!

I think this is a great little book if you/your teen is vegetarian leaning heavily to vegan, but it didn't work for us because it essentially does not include recipes with any dairy - so no milk, eggs, butter, cheese, etc. It relies heavily on tofu, soymilk, and dairy-free products to substitute for cheese, etc.. Unfortunately, we really don't like soy/tofu and my daughter is slightly allergic to soy. So, here, there are no veggie omelettes, egg salad, cheesy nachos, fun veggie-cheese fondues, really yummy desserts, etc. It also focuses on pita and bagels - really no whole grain breads, etc. Yes, you can probably substitute but it's hard to know whether the amounts should stay the same or if it will cook up the same way, and who wants to use a cookbook if you have to change every recipe? It does include a cheese option in a few recipes for pizza and stuffed pasta, for example, but it's pretty spare. It seems other folks who don't mind eliminating dairy really liked the book, but there is very little of use in it for us. If you don't plan on cutting out your yogurt and scrambled real eggs, keep looking!

This little book is ideal for the 'teen just beginning to explore vegetarianism. It helps them explore the reasons for their decision to be vegetarians, and explains the various kinds for them: vegan, ovo-lacto, etc. In boxes nestled within the recipe pages, it addresses many of the social and family aspects of this decision, like how to deal with (or avoid) curious questions in the lunchroom, or how to eat at home without just trying to eat side dishes from the family dinners. It also extolls the benefits of 'teens cooking vegetarian dishes for themselves, so that's a BIG benefit for busy Moms, who otherwise may have been cooking special dishes for their vegetarian kids. It offers VERY easy and wholesome vegetarian dishes, as well as some more complicated and/or technique-intensive ones, so a 'teen can really grow as a cook using this book.I just wish it addressed the COST of being vegetarian, since some of the ingredients are more expensive than some family food budgets anticipate. That way, it could help 'teens realize that they might consider helping pay for the foods they want, with extra chores, maybe, or babysitting.

The title suggests these recipes will be quick and simple, but most are not. The nature of vegetarian cooking is that many of the ingredients require a good deal of time to cook, and most recipes depend on a long list of spices and herbs to pep up their flavor profile. The "teen's" aspect of this cookbook actually may be that many of these recipes will appeal to teens. What teen does not like pizza? Most of the recipe's can be prepared by cooks with very little cooking experience if FIRST they acquire the extensive stock of herbs and spices that are called for, and SECOND, they set aside the time that the recipes require.Cooking is a useful skill that many teens and young adults have not been exposed to. Every cook needs a "first" cookbook to get them started, and this is a very good cookbook for a beginner. And, that would include new vegetarians who are fifty or sixty years old, not just fifteen or sixteen years old.

This book is probably my favorite cookbook. My mother bought it for me from a Scholastic book fair when I was 11, and 20 years later it is still my go-to guide. In fact, mom likes it so much that I had to buy another when I moved after college because she would not part with it. The Teen Vegetarian Cookbook is a great "learn how to cook." resource because it treats most recipes like suggestions and encourages the user to experiment. There is nothing new or innovative in this book just straightforward, inexpensive recipes. This is also a great resource for the young vegetarian who lives in a carnivorous household because it suggests ways you can use part of the family dinner before the meat is added. I highly recommend this book for any young person who is learning how to cook (vegetarian or not) or the unenthusiastic cook who just wants an easy and uncomplicated recipe guide.

I bought this for my vegetarian 13 year old for Christmas and he loves it! He has made many of the recipes and is learning his way around the kitchen beautifully, now if only there was a teenage guide to cleaning up the kitchen! We are a house of vegans so a lot of the ingredients we had already, lots of info and tips on vegan/veg lifestyle. Overall, a great book for any veg teen out there!

Great recipes in an easy to understand format. My teen daughter already enjoys cooking, but she was not finding many vegetarian recipes that she was interested in trying. This book has some fun foods and recipes for her to try.

She was so happy to have her own cookbook.

Review

"...an outstanding piece of legal and social history...this extraordinarybook is an immense undertaking, encompassing virtually the whole legalhistory of blacks in the United States. That it is an ambitiousundertaking is an understatement. That it succeeds is also anunderstatement.... And it is a great tribute to the skill of RichardKluger that he does that landmark [decision] simple justice."-- The Washington Post"So readable and authoritative it seems unlikely it will be supplanted.... A remarkable act of scholarship...a book about values...its readers shouldbe prepared to be moved."-- The Atlantic Monthly"One of the most important books published in our American times. Kluger has done it all - the formal research, interviews with the survivingwinners and losers in the chain of struggles.... A major accomplishmentboth as scholarship and journalism, and it also serves the name ofliterature.... A masterful study, it has a grace to match its scope."-- The Philadelphia Inquirer

From the Inside Flap

Simple Justice is the definitive history of the landmark case "Brown v. Board of Education and the epic struggle for racial equality in this country. Combining intensive research with original interviews with surviving participants, Richard Kluger provides the fullest possible view of the human and legal drama in the years before 1954, the cumulative assaults on the white power structure that defended segregation, and the step-by-step establishment of a team of inspired black lawyers that could successfully challenge the law. Now, on the fiftieth anniversary of the unanimous Supreme Court decision that ended legal segregation, Kluger has updated his work with a new final chapter covering events and issues that have arisen since the book was first published, including developments in civil rights and recent cases involving affirmative action, which rose directly out of "Brown v. "Board of Education.

This book is far more comprehensive than I could have ever anticipated. I tend to be wary of history books that are written so closely to the period, or the event, that they're discussing, since typically enough time hasn't passed to truly gain a full scope for the precedence that the events being discussed set, and the consequences of those events need more time to sink in. And it's especially difficult if the author actually lived through to see those events unfold, since being in the middle of a situation can typically obscure a clear view of it, but that skepticism was gone when Richard Kluger opened his book by detailing the legal state of racial identity in America immediately after the abolition of slavery. The subtitle of the book is somewhat misleading, "The History of Brown V. Board of Education and Black America's Struggle for Equality," which lead me to believe that Simple Justice would primarily be about the actual court case itself, but instead, more accurately, this book is less about Brown v Board itself, but more about the full scope of the African American struggle to attain equal access to education, the ridicule, shame, and injustice they endured for simple right to an education, and the hundreds of uphill battles blacks in America faced, along with the prejudice the court rooms held against them by demerit of their skin, all of which culminated over one hundred years until they finally secured a resounding victory in the decision of Brown v Board. It's a truly inspiring book in which Kluger paints so many silhouettes, and finds so many heroes on his journey through this particular vein of history.

Kluger’s book is a comprehensive compilation of the historical court case Brown V Board of Education and the Supreme Court decision that outlawed segregation. The author also covers the history of slavery in the United States and life after the Civil War for the black people. He describes the injustice, degradation and abuse to the black people.Kluger also covers the twenty years it took for states to fully respond to the Court’s directives to desegregate schools. The author also reviews, in great detail, the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments. Kluger shows how the law has served to create and alter who we are as a society. The book is well written and meticulously researched. It is a lengthy book at 822 pages. It is a detailed history of the treatment of blacks in this country. The author reminds us that freedom without resources is simply a different form of slavery. Kluger introduces the reader to pivotal black attorneys such as Thurgood Marshall, Charles Houston and William Hastie. This is a must-read book. I am left with the thought that Kluger’s book presents America’s own version of a living holocaust.I read this as an e-book on my Kindle app for my iPad. The recent release of the book in digital form was 2011. It was originally published on December 12, 1975.

After all these years, this poignant tale of "Simple Justice" shows that it was not so simple and there was not a whole lot of justice at any singular point in the entire civil rights battle. Your blood will boil at act after act of discrimination if you have an ounce of empathy or sense of social justice. I had to read this in the morning, otherwise, I would be too fired up to sleep. Fascinating back stories abound throughout.

The Kindle edition of Simple Justice is 799 pages, but do not be intimidated by its length. The author, Richard Kluger, devoted more than a decade of his life writing, researching and conducting interviews in compiling and completing this remarkable work. The subtitle of this literary masterpiece focuses on the landmark public school desegregation suit, which Oliver explains is actually a series of several desegregation lawsuits initially heard by the US Supreme Court in 1952. By order of the Court, the cases were re-argued in late 1953, but the Court's final decision was announced on May 17, 1954. Kluger explains the unanimous decision, as written by Chief Justice Earl Warren, and why Justice Warren sought a unanimous ruling.Simple Justice is a history lesson in print. Its' author provides a detailed history of the state of public education for African-American children stretching nearly a century from post Civil War to 1954. Oliver introduces the reader to several of the most valuable African-American attorneys, including future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. Other attorneys making significant contributions to the eventual 1954 decision included in this volume were: Robert Carter, Spottswood Robinson, William Hastie, James Gave it and Charles Houston. Kluger provides background detail of the Supreme Court justices who comprised America's highest court at the time Brown v. Board of Education, Topeka, KS.This remarkable compilation holds significant personal importance for me. I was the editor of a thrice-weekly newspaper in Opelousas, LA, parish seat of St. Landry Parish, located in South-central Louisiana from April 1985-November 1987. Although this period took place some 31 years after the Brown decision, St. Landry Parish Schools was just getting around to desegregation it's high schools, a project that involved creating three schools from six of the 12 that existed as of 1986. The school board's site selection of the three consolidated and desegregated high schools triggered a massive revolt from the African-American population of the parish, including demonstrations/sit-ins at the school district office in Opelousas. I covered and wrote the articles that our newspaper published during these events. Finally, I am compelled to state that this work by Richard Kluger should be required reading in every college curriculum relating to public education and the African-American population. It is just that valuable!
