I was actually looking for a what to expect book for the 1st year when I ran across this book. I was curious about it and decided to check it out. I was originally just going to read the 1st chapter or so to see if my husband would like it but next thing I know I had read the whole book in one night. This book is hilarious. I laughed so much while reading it my oldest son kept asking me what was so funny. I love how the author put true facts and helpful suggestions in such a fun way. It's not for people who don't like reading cuss words. (This is a book for guys with guy humor after all). But if that's not a problem, then I highly recommend this book to parents.

Pregnant wife here. This was an amazing read! Sarcastic, funny, and poop-filled. It's like the easy parts of having a baby (there are easy parts, right? They exist? Please tell me they exist!). I laughed. Like hearty, scare-the-dogs, wake the neighbors laughed. I also cried, but I chock that up to hormones.I got this for my spouse, but I'm nosey, so I read it first. Now my spouse who hates reading about anything but weapons and boomsticks has to read it. Should be easy after the first chapter.

So many true things that he twists around to word it so that I had to laugh, giggle, or snicker on every page. I needed this book! Great job! As a woman, I wondered what he would say and it really didn't diss women, much, but is was hilarious! Funny as heck! It was free too, so I was double happy!

This book is *not* a continuation of Ben's other short comedies whose covers look exactly the same as this. Although there is a bit of comedy used in the delivery (pun intended) of this material, that isn't the focus.For those who are looking for a male equivalent to the hundreds of books that are written by women and for women - this is it! It's definitely written by a man, for men. You will appreciate the honest and sometimes crude humor. Ben tells it straight, and he doles out some awesome advice, the kind that I wish I had someone tell me before my two kids were born. "Do not look at the vagina!" is about as blunt as he can get, and he's absolutely correct. Solid advice right there.So all you new Dads or about-to-be Dads, go ahead and dive in. Buy this book and learn a few things your friends may not have the guts to tell you.

My husband LOVES reading this book and can’t put it down! It’s hilarious and he just laughes while reading it. One thing he likes so much is the book is written by a Dad from a typical dad’s perspective. It’s also not hateful about the women (which many of these books talk down about the spouse). Great read! Howard W. French wrote from Africa for The Washington Post and The New York Times. At the Times, he was bureau chief in Latin America and the Caribbean, West and Central Africa, Japan, and China. Read about the new kid on the African playing field who is picking up the ball that we-all seem to have fumbled during the last 40 years. That kid's name is China! Author Howard W. French has given us an eye-opener of a book and we need to read it and talk about how Africa fits into the long range planetary game. This is a quantum leap forward from the struggles outlined in my own Africa historical fiction novel of the 1990's.China is sending its people out on a global diaspora that seems to be infiltrating every African nation; much the same way that sixteenth century Europe financed entrepreneurs, trappers and traders to move to lesser developed parts of the world to benefit the homeland. Chinese farmers are being drawn enmass to the vast irrigable stretches along the Niger River in Mali to begin expanding rice production on a gigantic scale.Chinese miners and engineers are moving into mineral rich nations from Namibia and Mozambique in the south through the Congo and on north into Ghana and Senegal in West Africa. Scores of Chinese builders are setting up schools, stadiums, hospitals, roads and bridges in Zambia, Botswana and Nigeria. All these countries are areas that the West only wanted to exploit but never planned to develop. Africans, sensing that the rest of the technological world might leave them behind have therefore turned towards the rising sun to find new funding and expertise.This story, of course, is not all about lovely Chinese altruism, but rather a look at a model of development which the Chinese call win-win but, which in fact often gives the Chinese immigrants favored status in the country to do as they wish, while the African nation gets tokens of development and a lot of cash flowing into the pockets of the high officials within the country in order to keep them mollified. "China's Second Continent" is an extremely well-written and easy to read book. It is a collection of anecdotes and data that comes together to create the complicated and very nuanced story of China's understandable overseas expansion.French's style is pleasing to read. Traveling in different parts of Africa, he conducts interviews with a multitude of interested parties, including government ministers, small-time Chinese traders, prostitutes, heads of state-run Chinese companies, union organizers, and workers for Chinese companies. French never backs away from his own personal thoughts and opinions of the people he meets, which is quite refreshing. Throughout his travels, he keeps a running commentary of his thesis, that China's long-term relationship with Africa extends far beyond quid-pro-qua mineral extraction and is headed towards a relationship whereby African countries will contribute to China's bread basket. French believes that this is a new and different form of imperialism.There are two relationships dealt with in this book: that of individual Chinese entrepreneurs who migrate to Africa, and that of state-run Chinese companies who seem to fly by night in order to build infrastructure in exchange for natural resource or transportation concessions. The entrepreneurs are all colorful characters, well-described by French. The state-run company managers and workers are all tight-lipped, giving the reader the impression that there are nefarious plans at work. While many Africans, Europeans, and Americans complain that China's infrastructure projects in Africa are ramshackle and poor quality, leaving Africans with white elephants that they must manage, they are at least helping to build infrastructure, something the managers and high-level government workers say. Without direct Chinese investment, projects would drag on and never materialize, or only materialize in the form of hard-to-see investments in education, property management, and so forth.Is China's investment, both large and small, in the country helpful? There is no solid conclusion here, but the evidence French presents seems to suggest that because there is no "capacity development" to maintain the large infrastructure contracts, the large, official investment is unhelpful.Beyond the academic and economic conclusions, French is an excellent writer. The chapters in "China's Second Continent" are good-sized chunks that give a good picture of each country he visits, concentrating on the theme of meeting Chinese migrants.

Howard French is an excellent writer. This book is written in a journalistic style and is an easy read on a big geopolitical topic.China’s entry, or return to Africa bears none of its previous anti-colonial pretense. In fact, she enters as a colonialist without the naked display of power that the European colonialists showed. Nonetheless, she is after minerals, food and land. China is there to exploit and her people who are sent out as would be shock troops are traders not benefactors. Africans hope to benefit from the promised “win-win” but in most cases their leaders have sold them out, or have been out-maneuvered by the more business savvy Chinese.The book recounts many instances of this theme through a travelog narrative. Well written and very vivid. Paints a disheartening picture of a new round of exploitation of the African people. Not an optimistic future if trends continue as they are.

Sad but indispensable book, for those who want to understand the myriad of crossroads where SCOTUS blew-it and took us down the wrong path (translation: undermined either individual liberty, or Federalism, or states' rights (which was itself an integral aspect of the original system of Federalism).Most of the reasons for the sell-out are political, in my opinion. And the mistakes usually flow from the 3 biggest loopholes in the Constitution: The Necessary & Proper Clause; The Commerce Clause; and The General Welfare Clause.

Americans have long looked to the Supreme Court as the last bastion of their liberties and as the one institution that stands as a check against the encroachments of an Executive Branch eager to expand its power and and a Legislative Branch intent on satisfying the whims of a grasping majority. As Robert Levy and William Mellor demonstrate in their must-read book The Dirty Dozen: How Twelve Supreme Court Cases Radically Expanded Government and Eroded Freedom, that is far from the truth. In reality, and especially in the 3/4 of a century since the New Deal, the Supreme Court has essentially stood by while the Federal Government, and the states, whittle away at long cherished American liberties.Though they deals with at-times complex legal issues, Levy and Mellor have done a great job in this book of making those issues understandable even to someone without legal training. For each case selected, they set forth the facts of the case, their position on where the Court got it wrong, and the consequences that have developed from that decision. They also deal separately with two of the most controversial Supreme Court cases of the past 30-odd years; Roe v. Wade and Bush v. Gore. For different reasons, they fail to include either case in their "Dirty Dozen" list largely because they believe that the Court at least got the result right even if one could find problems with the way they got there.In each case, Levy and Mellor clearly explain how the Court ignored the plain text of the Constitution, precedent, and quite often common sense, to reach it's decision and how those decisions have increased the power of the state at the expense of individual liberty. Oe may disagree with the author's choice of cases;it would have been interesting, for example, for them to discuss "Dirty Dozen" cases from the era prior to 1937 (and there are certainly enough of them) and how those decisions lead to the judicial ideology that created the case law they rightly decry. However, it's fairly clear that they've selected a dozen pretty bad cases, and the book provides an object lesson of what happens when one of the branches of government ignores it's Constitutional responsibilities.

This book does a great job of explaining how politicians (from both the left and right) and public appeal have persuaded the supreme court to arrive at unconstitutional rulings, primarily over the last century. The result has been a progressive and scary move towards bigger government at the expense of the personal freedoms and liberties that are the cornerstone of our constitution. The book does much more than complain; it recounts in unbiased details, it offers explanations of the rationale for the decisions, it illustrates the widespread implications of each ruling, and it offers hope with a described path back to the days of achieving and retaining one's own self worth.

If you think that the Constitution will always be there to protect you, think again.This book illustrates what can happen when supreme court justices get it wrong: the laws that protect the people from their government lose their meaning and we're left that much more defenseless. The Dirty Dozen is one of those books that should be on everyone's summer reading list.But the truly magnificent part about this particular work is that its veracity is NOT up for grabs- whereas many books offering one or another particular version of history will be touted as both fact and farce (depending on who you talk to), this one's got all the bases covered.Even the most hardened liberals will concede that the outcomes of the dirty dozen cases are alarming signs that the power of government, when left unchecked, threatens us all.

The Dirty Dozen are twelve of the worst Supreme Court decisions from the New Deal through the present. The book gives some background info leading up to the Court hearing the specific case, and then explains what's at stake and the consequences. It shows the justices reasoning through the majority and dissenting opinions, and where the court went wrong in their thought process.Some of the cases will leave you shaking your head in disbelief. Others will leave you shaking your head in total disgust. These decisions go against any rational thinking. After reading the first case, I figured that was the worst decision I had ever read. Not so. Each one is an abomination in its own right.The book really reveals a much greater problem than twelve bad decisions: the framers intended for elected reps not the Supreme Court to change the Constitution. Instead we have we have justices, political appointees for life with no accountability to the people, rewriting the Constitution. The Supreme Court has been moving further and further toward restricting individual freedoms, and there is nothing we can do about it.This book has certainly changed my view of the Supreme Court justices. Excellent book. It is very easy to read and understand for a book examining legal proceedings.

I read a fair amount of true crime but of everything I've read this book creeped me out the most. It is not for the faint of heart. The crimes are described in such horrific detail I almost put the book down, but the depraved couple who committed these crimes deserved no less. I'm interested in the psychology of psychopaths and serial killers and am always looking for a way into understanding them and seeing them as still human. But by the time I finished Invisible Darkness I felt a visceral hatred for Karla and Paul and not a shred of compassion. One of the things I found most interesting was the way Williams juxtaposed Karla's seemingly perfect domestic life (her fairy tale wedding etc) with the pure hell it concealed. Also interesting how the 'lovely' pornographic Karla managed to wrap therapists, the police, and her lawyers around her little finger with her tales of victim-hood. I think in this case the stereotypes of vulnerable pretty women that are ingrained in our culture worked in her favor. Though I would like to 'unknow' some of this book, it continues to haunt me.

Wonderful Book about the serial killing team of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka. They both sexually assaulted, raped, sodomized and murdered three teenage girls, Tammy Lyn Homolka (Karla decided to give her 15 year old sister's virginity to Paul as a Christmas gift, by drugging her and sexually assaulting her while Paul raped her but she died probably from mixing alcohol and veterinary anesthetic), Leslie Erin Mahaffy (Paul kidnapped her after finding her locked out of her house after coming home after curfew, they kept her for 3 days with both Karla and Paul sexually assaulting her but had to strangle her because Karla's parents were expected for a Father's day dinner. After they dismembered her body, encased it in cement and dumped it at Lake Gibson) and Kristen Dawn French (Paul and Karla kidnapped her from a church parking lot, kept her as long as they could, continually violating her and then strangled her and dumped her in a ditch). The most sickening aspect is that she's free.

This book chronicles the story of the so called "Ken and Barbie" killers. Most of the book seemed more focused on Karla than on Paul but I was able to get past that. Both of these killers are sick and justice has not been fully served on these two.The true events took place in the late 1980's and early 90's in Canada near the US border with Niagara Falls. The couple has their own love story along with their wicked crimes. Both Paul and his wife Karla are two people who delight in others pain. Paul is a serial rapist while Karla enjoys pain in others especially if it pleases Paul. While Karla tried to paint herself as a victim too under Paul's control, I believe she is just as wicked as he was.In the end, this wicked couple kidnap, rape, and murder three women including Karla's own younger sister (a gift to Paul according to Karla).Overall, not a bad read. The story got bogged down in the end with the police investigation but it was needed.

Being originally from Southern Ontario, although having left before most of the events described in this book, I was quite horrified by this whole story. I won't describe the story itself in any detail as I believe it to be very public knowledge--the author does a very good job of relating what happened. The rapes--although not two of the murders--are described in very graphic detail that many readers will find traumatic to read. It is horrifying how matter-of-fact the act of rape became for this couple. For example, at one point Karla and Paul are entertaining people they called "friends" in their home. At first it seems like this might offer the reader a brief respite from the continual onslaught of horrible crimes. But the respite is brief: the very next paragraph, Paul is in the bathroom raping one of his female houseguests.Williams does a good job of describing the rapes, the criminal investigation, and the trials in considerable detail--although, as noted, the details are shocking, for those who want to know more about the case, there is a great deal of information here.Despite the detail, however, there are significant questions left unanswered. Despite the graphic detail on the rapes, the deaths of two of the girls happen offstage. Thus the important question of who was more responsible for those deaths--Karla or Paul--is something that we can only guess at. I had hoped to learn more about this, as it is an important question given the plea bargain that allowed Karla to go free after a relatively brief sentence, whereas Paul is locked up presumably for life. I was also left with some unanswered questions about the plea bargain itself. The way it was generally described in the media doesn't seem to be the full story but the exact motivation for the plea bargain remains a bit unclear.I understand that Williams' other book on this subject gives more detail on the plea bargain itself, and I look forward to reading that book as well--to the extent that one can "look forward" to any kind of reading of this sort of subject matter.

Even though I already knew the story, I found this an incredibly compelling book. I've seen television episodes on this case and have read another book about it. Stephen Williams clearly has some inside information that was not released to the public. For instance he describes what is happening on the videotapes that supposedly nobody but the jury, the police, the lawyers or the court had access to. There are a few times where the description of a person or place was a little excessive, but I didn't think that was enough to take off a star. I highly recommend this excellent true crime book.
