About the Author

Mary Irish is the former director of public horticulture at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona. She has written extensively on dry-climate gardening, and is the coauthor (with her husband, Gary Irish) of "Agaves, Yuccas, and Related Plants." Itf you're new to and Arizona garden and plan to garden, you need this book. I'm a Master Gardener in Oregon but Arizona is completely different. This book will let you know what to plant and when to plant it. You can't assume that just because a certain plant is available in the big box store that it's the right time to plant it here. . .or for that matter if it'll even grow in Arizona.

Not real fond of the way the book is layer out; that is, by plant category. I have plants in many categories, so I have to flip back and forth between sections every month. Also, was disappointed that none of the plants in the photos are identified. Would have liked to see pictures of the plants in their sections.

This is not really what I was looking for. I guess I should have paid more attention to the month-by-month at the top. The monthly to-dos and topics are kind of simplistic. Not really as definitive as I would have liked.

first off the company i ordered this from sent me this edition instead of the one i requested, and the quality was not at all what they described... BUT this book is really good. it is incredibly detailed and amazingly complete- so much info. its really a great resource for growing anything in the az desert. the only thing that kinda bugged me was each catagory was seperated ex: shrubs, vegetables, roses, and then broken down into months. I would have liked just 12 months with it broken down within the month. very glad i have it though.

For those of us who have turned our backyards into elegant edible landscaping, this book is a must-have. Written specifically for desert climates, it tells you what to plant (and when), when and how to fertilize your produce, tips on growing great fruits and veggies, and much more. I constantly refer to this book for much needed information.

This book is a little basic. It's okay for a new gardener like me, but an experienced gardener would not need it. I would have loved some lists of flowers and shrubs for each month but they are all in paragraphs.

Excellent guide to planting for the southwest region. We have extensive landscape and want to plant a sustainable edible garden this year. This book is very helpful and has information month by month for all aspects of planting. Highly recommended. The author lives in Arizona and is a master gardener.

Very repetitive. Limited information. I found the authors other book AZ Gardeners Guide more informative. I would not have bought it if I had glanced through it first.

I've already done a lot of online reading, built the van, and look forward to increasing my travel time. I wanted to try book format, to see if there may be either new information, or, perhaps I would find a concise reference book with continuing value. From the subtitle, at least, I had expected more of a lifestyle book. It's really a primer on what one must consider, with regard to equipping a van for living or camping: What options you have for a basic vehicle, then, bed, electricity, water, heat, cooling, toilet, cooking, etc. There is not a lot of how-to, and, what there is, is very basic.The book is well-written, and, I did not see any major errors. All topics covered DO need to be considered, by prospective van people.I would take issue with the estimated expense ($100-200) of adding an auxiliary (house) battery that will charge with the vehicle's alternator. A decent deep cycle or marine AGM battery will use up most of the estimated cash, and you still have to add charge controller and/or relay, cables, main fuse, distribution fusebox, wiring, and some 12v sockets, at minimum. I would double the given estimate.The yellow, kayak-laden pop-top van on the book's cover seems too flashy for the topic. I think a more modest and typical van would be better suited.

I travel for a living so I spend a lot of time in my car and rental cars. Frequently I must sleep in my car. I foresee a near future where I will be traveling further away from home and therefore even more time in my car. I started adding up my motel bills and realized that some months I am spending more than I do on my mortgage and utilities. I have started looking at my options; teardrop trailer, converted van, camper van, small motor-home etc.. I had some questions so I have bought 3 books. This was the second book I read. This book answered most of the questions I had and definitely gave me some other subjects to consider too. The added bonus is the download-able PDF references on different vans and DIY solar system (I also foresee this as a must have). I have a feeling I'll be re-reading this book as my research expands. This book is well worth the small price I paid and I would recommend it to anyone who maybe spending a lot of time in their vehicle.

Chris has compiled a lot of information in a very organized and well-illustrated format. I think this would be a helpful guide to newbees. I have been living this life for seven years, with almost the same van as Chris has, but my build was much less extravant and I did not have the resources she had. I know many of the people she mentions in the book, and am familiar with many of the products and links she uses. I can't say she is offering any NEW information that isn't already out there, but she does a good job of laying it out in an organized manner. I would recommend it to others.I also want to point out she made mistakes in her own build, but she realized what they were as she went along and points them out clearly. I admire her for doing that. There is not just ONE way of doing things.

Chris On's Defying Normal is the first information on van dwelling I read, so I am familiar with her style of writing, personal but engaging. I felt the beginning had more personal information than was useful. However, the rest of the book blew me away. She covers topics of living in a van that I had not even considered, like laundry, furniture, mail, showering. Every topic is very thoroughly covered. The breadth of information provided was inspiring. Who knew there were so many options for cooking? Her anecdotes about how she does it are very helpful, too. Not everyone will do things the same, but it was useful for perspective. Seeing how she does it, helps me imagine what I might do. Besides the detail she provides on a given topic and the options available, her Final Thoughts and Pros & Cons segments really help one to evaluate what path might be best for your own situation. The subtitle is "how to live in a van" not how to build a conversion, so for anyone wondering about the lifestyle, Chris's book provides a lot of food for thought. This is a very good book for anyone considering van dwelling and perhaps for someone recently in, to see what else can be done.

The author outlines both the good and bad aspects of van dwelling. She explains, in detail, how to turn your van into a custom home on wheels. Beginning with how to choose a van, she takes the reader through insulation, furniture, beds, high tops, solar, and all other considerations, including how to handle toilet needs.I think what impressed me the most was the author’s honesty in explaining how readers can avoid the mistakes she made when converting her own van. The book is well worth the cost.

Packed full of great information, organized and well written. Chris's conversational writing style makes the book fun and easy to read, and she covers everything! Pros, cons, work arounds, mistakes she made that the reader can avoid, and suggestions for every budget. If you're even considering van dwelling, save yourself a lot of headaches and read this book first! Chris has got you covered.

Very good start if you are interested in becoming a van dweller. Gives overviews of topics one should be concerned about such as cooking, showers, toilets, staying warm, cooling off, energy, etc., and provides options for them and rough costs. She provides companies and brands to consider for those options. Good resource. I'd recommend this.

The info is solid and well written. You must remember it comes from someone who could afford to put a lot of extra expense into her van. That said, she does detail cheaper options for those of us with little money. I didn't learn much new info but I've been vandwelling for many years. This is a good primer for newbies.

I thoroughly enjoyed every second spent reading this book. My only criticism is I wish it had not ended and I look forward to Zack Grey’s next book. His work is thought provoking and resonates with any reader. It features a common thread of understanding the challenges of human relationships and the balance within them.

I like it. It's honest. I haven't read his other stuff, but I bet he will be really great in 10 or 15 years.Not terribly profound overall, but there were some things in there that really made me think.

This book is not only BEAUTIFUL aesthetically but poetically is stunning. The attention to detail in its design is truly wonderful. The book is separated into thirds, colors corresponding to the sun cycle and emotional themes. I absolutely loved it.

These words are so heartfelt and puts me right in the feels. I love this book with all my heart. A true poetic warrior of words.

This is my second year following Tricia Cusden, and using her ‘Look Young Forever’ products. I had been unhappy with my makeup. I did all the right things, cleansed, conditioned my skin and I have good genes, but my makeup was not looking the best. Somehow I happened upon Tricia’s YouTube video, and decided to purchase some of her products. They arrived in a very stylish silver bag, and the next day I started using her products. Oh, boy, was I ever surprised. If you could only purchase one product, I would suggest the Silk Face Prime. Your face does indeed feel like silk, and your foundation glides on. I also found her video instructions to be more than helpful. I am a convert to her products, and I only use her products.Tricia’s Book is very helpful. Everything she has related in her videos and more is encapsulated in this book. I would suggest starting at the first page and reading right through, but you can skip to chapters that may fill your needs. This is the first time since my twenties when I feel that I really look good. My face glows, and the colors I have chosen all compliment each other. I have also become more daring in my clothing colors, and the lines of clothing I purchase. I wear foundation almost every time I go out. On rare occasions I will apply the Face Prime and cheek blush, freshen my eyebrows, and go out for a walk or some exercise or to the market. In this book, you will glean ideas on how to present yourself at your most glorious best, and you will feel better about yourself.Growing older is not for sissies, they say, and we can feel our best. The women Tricia presents in the photos are real women looking their best, or just learning to prepare their faces to look their best which results in feeling better. I know what colors look best on me, what shape I am, and how to choose clothing that best suits my shape. I receive Tricia’s email letters and suggestions and new product selections. It is very easy to select your products, the products themselves are very attractive in their containers, and they arrive via mail quickly. This is a really good book for a beginning gardener with limited space. I especially like that it shows many attractive container gardens as well as traditional in-the-ground and raised beds. One small quibble...I think they mean "3 feet squared" not "3 square feet" (which in the U.S. means 1'x3') since the illustrations always show 3'x3' arrangements (or "9 square feet'). Either way, they have practical plans for producing useable food in a very small space.

This wasn't exactly the book I was expecting. I was going for no larger than 3 square feet but after reading this book it seems that the plants mentioned would be better in 9 square feet. It was my mistake not the author. At one time I had planted a 4 foot square garden and it really was too large.However, the author did a fantastic job in explaining how to plant and grow a wide variety of plants and vegetables. He certainly knows his way around a garden. I feel certain that many people can learn a lot from this book.

Great book if you are pretty new to gardening/container gardening. It was laid out very easy to read and understand. Some great ideas too.

It's alright, not exactly the wealth of knowledge I was hoping for. It's basically just general knowledge and ideas for how to lay out your raised beds (which I feel like anyone can do on their own). It repeats a lot of the same veggies over and over again.

I’ve been involved with Wi-Fi almost since there was Wi-Fi, and during the time I was learning the technology, I was amazed that there were virtually no books on the topic. I had to learn it on my own. Later on, when books began to appear, I was puzzled that none of them seemed connected to any reality I had had any experience with. I had this hunch that the guys who were writing a lot of these books (especially those targeted at corporate IT departments) had never laid hands on any actual Wi-Fi gear. What they were telling me wasn’t matching what I was finding as I implemented networks for myself and later for my friends. I hate when that happens—so I decided to write a book based on experience rather than vendor documentation and hearsay. The book represents three years of working with 802.11b systems. There was no vendor involvement and no "review products." I paid for all the gear and I describe it as I found it, for good or for bad. I tell you what worked for me and what didn’t, and how I figured it out. If you follow the techniques I describe, you should be able to do it too. Some of it is a little goofy—making microwave antennas out of foil-lined soup boxes, say—but I was amazed at how well it worked. Working with Wi-Fi now reminds me of the Crazy Years of personal computing, back in the 70s and 80s when anything was possible and the suits were still trying to figure out how to put it all back in the bottle. We changed the world with personal computing, and over the next five years, we’re going to change the world again, this time with ubiquitous wireless networking. Why not get in on it?

Unfortunately, Jeff and I are both old enough to remember when correspondence outside of your office took place via snail mail and the most popular Internet tools of the time were Archie, Veronica and Gopher.The things that I like the most about Jeff's books (and I have several of them) are twofold. First, when he writes on a topic he covers the given topic in-depth. With him, no stone is left unturned. Second, his writing style is such that he makes you feel as though you are sitting across the coffee table from him having a discussion while enjoying a cup of java or a glass of good (single barrel) Tennessee sour mash whiskey. His latest project does not disappoint!If you are thinking of getting WLAN access for your home or small office, this book is for you. If you already have WLAN access at your home or small office and are interested in tweaking; tuning or expanding it, this book is for you. If you are mechanically inclined and want some WLAN projects to work on, this book is for you. The second part of the book shows you how to hook up a network in your home. The third part covers the theoretical and practical details of security. The fourth part deals with extending the range of your laptop and some of the secrets behind wardriving.I liked the tin can bandwidth extender project section. I just recently came across this book because a friend suggested I get it. I've been using wi-fi for a little over a year now and I bought a number if the books that were published over the past year--big disapointment there. I was super gald to find this book because most of the other books were very academic and didn't really offer much.What I like about this book is that it is very hands-on. And man this author can really write. This is one of the best technical books I have ever read. If I were a tech writer I'd really want to take lessons from this author.The best part about the book is the hands-on projects and the chapter on War Driving. The Wi-fi reception in my house (I live in an older house) isn't great so I've been messing around with some of the projects in the book to improve my reception. The discussion of attennas is really first rate. I wish that I had more technical books that were written this well.-Peter
