I found this book to be very interesting. It is exactly what the title states and that means it is not for the abject beginner. There are seven sections which include 37 different short papers or essays. What is interesting is that in this, the third edition, the authors have included some web content that you have to download. For example I found that the articles on "Women Succeeding Globally", and"Why 360s Do not Work and How They Can" particularly interesting. And to conclude any time that I have an opportunity to read essays/ articles by Edgar H. Schein I feel enriched.

Root's book on play of the hand is the best textbook on the topic. It is one of only three bridge books I recommend. It is written by an American for Americans. The book's organization is fantastic. I've written thousands of pages of instructional material for college students, and I think anyone can learn from studying this book.

The ideas are clear and presented with easy to comprehend examples.No side tracking with high level ideas as many Bridge writers love to do (we know you are a genius, but here we want to learn with our own level)Every idea is presented separately with plenty to examples and a good quiz for each chapter.

A great book for someone wanting to imp0rove their play of a bridge hand. A lot of book for the money.

A nice practical book. Shows you how to handle every problem in bridge.

It's good but it's taking a lot of time to read.

It is understandable and has good problems at the ends of the chapters. A good, generic study book about declarer play.

This book has truly wonderful information but it is NOT EASY by any means, which is what the title and the writeup say. And though stuffed with content, the book is really sketchy and makes you read between the lines. I stopped reading after having a hard time making sense of the first 2-3 chapters. I would say if you haven't been playing seriously for a year, this is likely not the right book for you.

This is a must have for anybody really trying to follow the A Blood Type diet. Planning meals from this book is so much more relaxed than trying to amend other recipes to fit the blood type diet. It has made grocery shopping and meal planning much easier for me. Plus, the recipes are delicious. The Veggie Lasagna is the best veggie lasagna I have ever had! And some of the meals seem so indulgent compared to how I was trying to follow the blood type diet on my own - especially the Herb-Crusted Turkey Breast, Stone-Fruit Salad, and Fish Tacos. Major props to Chef Kristin O'Conner for developing such healthy, delicious meals!HOWEVER, this book is poorly edited and not appropriate for people just beginning to cook. There is no ingredient index, no sense of how long recipes will take to make, not enough suggestions for pairing food, and too many omissions/typos. One soup recipe says to "add water bring to boil and simmer," but never says how much water. I guessed 4 c. and it worked out. Another says "bake until..." but it never says how long or at what temperature. Some recipe titles mention ingredients that are not in the recipe! This is poor editing, and should be improved for future editions. I would recommend that the publisher create a site for people to report such omissions/ typos.Other suggestions for the next edition.- A list in the introduction of where featured ingredient explanations are located and suggestions for buying and storing rare ingredients.- index!- weekly meal planners with shopping lists that minimize how many ingredients must be bought. Buying many ingredients that I only need small amounts for make following the A blood type diet much more expensive and harder to follow. Build the meal plans with cost and efficiency in mind. (ex: each week have 1 poultry, 1 fish, and 3 veggie dinners, with lunches that take into account leftovers from dinner)All in all I love this cook book! And I highly recommend it to my friends who like to eat and cook healthy meals. But shame on the publishers for not editing it appropriately. Poor editing really reduces the quality and usability of this book - especially for people who are trying to eat and cook healthy for the first time.

Disappointed. Bought this book over a year ago and never used it. I'm an accomplished cook, and capable of scouring the Internet for recipes. Excited and new to the world of "diet" cookbooks, I bought this expecting recipes which were centered around beneficial foods for Type A, with neutrals and no "avoids". I was shocked and dismayed to find them in many of the recipes, and really no emphasis on the beneficials. Later, I read that the cookbooks were written so that families could use them to create recipes to satisfy members of different blood types. Sorry, but that's really lame. This book should have NO AVOID INGREDIENTS IN IT. The whole idea is to stop using those foods, as they are damaging to us. Now, after having gone chiefly paleo and reading the reviews for many guides and cookbooks, I see that poor composition is common. Finally as a Type A I see a need for a cookbook which eliminates coconut, banana, nightshades, cabbage, cauliflower and most cheeses. I may write one.

This book contains a great amount of recipes. Starting the blood type diet can be confusing, and it's tiring to constantly reference the "good" list of foods when cooking or meal planning. This takes care of that problem. The pictures are pretty lackluster, so I'm not raving about them, but the recipes themselves are solid. There's a section for main dishes, side dishes, snacks and drinks.For beginner cooks, or those not accustomed to cooking with fresh/alternative ingredients (spelt flour, beet sauce, carob chips, adzuki beans, tofu) this will be very challenging. I've been cooking "alternatively" for several years so it wasn't too big of a deal for me, personally, but I've read several reviews stating otherwise. It's nothing anyone cannot tackle, given the time and some research for better understanding.

This is one of the better books dealing with the complex issue of the morality of abortion. In it, Beckwith, I believe, successfully defeats some of the most important and compelling pro abortion choice arguments, including those by David Boonin and J J Thomson.Beckwith also wonderfully illustrates the flawed logic behind Roe v. Wade, Doe v. Bolton and other Supreme Court decisions. His note 76 to chapter 8 is lucid and powerful and so good I am tempted to quote it here in its entirety.But, of course, the best pro abortion choice arguments do not underpin the important (and weakly reasoned) Supreme Court decisions on abortion. The best pro abortion choice arguments, which can be complex and powerful, have to do, I believe, with a woman’s bodily autonomy. And Beckwith does an admirable and compelling job in dealing with the best of these arguments.This book does not contain religious arguments, nor should it in my view. The arguments contained in Defending Life are worthy of careful consideration by people holding any view on the important issue of abortion.Why is the issue important? The closing words of the book paint a clear picture:“[The] moral truth [that the deliberate killing any member of the human family, regardless of age or state under normal circumstances is morally wrong] is the one strand in the tapestry of republican government that, if removed, will put in place premises that will facilitate the unraveling of the understanding of ourselves and our rights… [I]f we are, as even supporters of abortion must assume, bearers of moral rights by nature (including the ‘right to choose’), then there can be no right to abortion, for the one who has the ‘right to choose’ is identical to her prenatal self. Consequently, the right to abortion can only be purchased at the price of abandoning natural rights and replacing them with the will to power. It is a price not worth paying.”As an aside, I really feel the choice for the photograph on the cover of the book is a regrettable choice. First, the pro-life movement does not consist primarily of men...and it is men who are more prominent in this photo. Further, the signs pictured contain the Knights of Columbus (K of C) insignia...and the K of C is a catholic organization. Finally, the event depicted in the photo is a march to protest legal abortion. I have no beef with religious arguments against abortion. I have no beef with the K of C. And I have no beef with protests or religion in general. What bothers me is that this book is written purely from a philosophical perspective and can, therefore, be appreciated by even the most hardened of the new atheists...and the cover does not represent what the book contains and I worry that it will scare off honest and thoughtful people who are not religious.

It covers the legal development of abortion in the United States, philosophical arguments, medical arguments, popular arguments, and shows that the most comprehensive, internally coherent, and empirically reliable position to maintain is a pro-life position.

A must read book to anybody having questions about abortion. From Row v. Wade to the different methods used in abortions these days, tjis book does an excellent job in explaining these and other issues.

At first, this book scared me. Beckwith really does an outstanding job giving a logical defense for the sanctity of every human life. All of the arguments that we have heard as to why the abortion choice position should remain intact are served up and put to rest. Thank you, Francis Beckwith.

A very enjoyable read. Beckwith adeptly handles the legal and moral issues surrounding abortion. His treatment of the relevant Supreme Court cases is incredibly insightful, and his use of logic is powerful in the refutation of pro-abortion arguments.The only drawback is his refusal to connect his pro-life position to some ultimate standard of morality. It is sad when committed Christians think they are being good apologists by trying to remain "neutral" and not take a "religious" position. It turns out there is no middle ground on moral or religious matters. Jesus said that we are either for him or against him, so Christians who choose to "leave the Bible out of it" are surrendering ground to the enemy.Although Beckwith soundly refutes the pro-abortion arguments, his own case is not actually that convincing in its own right. His "substance" view of persons is rather vague and not easy to understand, even for the well-educated. He says that a human is valuable because of the "type of thing it is", and that because a human remains a human throughout his entire life despite experiencing changes both inside and outside the womb, it is always wrong to unjustly kill a human. His response to being accused of "speciesism" is extremely weak, claiming only that humans are different than animals because they possess a "personal nature." But what exactly does "personal nature" mean? Beckwith never attempts to explain this answer. I think my cat has a "personal nature", but that does not make it a human.The ultimate answer for why abortion (and murder) is wrong is that human beings are made in the image of God. THAT is what makes humans different from animals. Overall, this book contains great information and is very helpful to Christians, but only so far. When reasoning with unbelievers, Christians must not be afraid to quote Scripture or affirm the reality of God. To abandon that position is to give up ground to the enemy.

This book is simply incredible. Beckwith answers all the typical abortion-choice arguments, and builds an undeniable case for the personhood of the unborn. In particular, Beckwith spends a chapter answering the human being vs. human person objection, and a chapter answering the common bodily autonomy argument, the only two abortion-choice arguments that actually don't beg the question. This is, of course, after Beckwith builds the case for the humanity of the unborn. The book is extremely well researched, and each chapter contains extensive footnotes. Along with Life Giving Love by Kimberly Hahn, this is now my favorite book. A MUST for all pro-lifers, as well as those that support abortion who wish to know how the other side argues.

every year, I try and treat myself to an overseas trip to a country that is hot and humid so I can have a few days free (relatively) from the pain of my arthritis. The Spartacus guides help me plan my trips, working out where I want to go and where I want to stay. I am too old and have spent too much time in pain to want to go ot stay anywhere that I dont feel welcome. So far Thailand is my favourite vacation spot and I prefer to either go to the islands or to Pattaya than to stay in Bangkok. Unfortunately, Bangkok is becoming too big, too touristy, too commerical and too dangerous to be as much fun or as exciting as it once was. The islanmds are the most unspoilt and Pattaya (while becoming commercial) still retains a lot of charm in off season, when it is bloody cold at home

You can check my reviews of prior versions. Spartacus remains the standard for global travel. Sure, bars close or are renamed often. However, this single guide gives you an excellent starting point of where to go, what to see in nearly every city on the planet. If you are gay and travel outside of the US, you need to buy this book. As I've said in the past....the price is under 2 drinks in any major city in the US. So I'm basically done with my review. I will say though, there are other guides which are better if you never intend to leave the US border (damron). Have fun!

It's good only to have a general view of the areas.I checked some places I'm familiar and it has some gaps. I was expecting a description, but many places are just the name and address. One of the best and famous clubs I know has nothing special on this book and no description about the crowd!So I think it's just good for a first look. Then you go online and look more about it.

I find the individual country commentaries especially helpful, as they give good insight regarding acceptance of gays in each country. I've been purchasing this book for years, and the listings for bars, hotels, etc seem to get more accurate every year.I would not advise to use this guide solely for planning a luxury vacation.

hey guys... what is that about? there is much more and better info online if you just search the gaymap of any town or country you would like to go. ordered it for try and got really upset on what i got there. moreover, it did not mention anywhere the country i was particularly interested in even though that one does not have any restrictions. really waste!p.s. the delivery was fast.

I considered the Burch and Ferrero books on the same topic, and decided that the former was overkill for me, and the latter appeared to be more aimed at blue-water kayakers, which is not the case for me. Killen was at a perfect level.This book was "updated" to include a now-dated section on GPS, which felt a little tacked-on and obligatory - Killen is really all about chart and compass,which is fine with me. We just finished a 5-day circumnavigation of whitewater bay in the Everglades and never touched our GPS once (by the way, I would be hard-pressed to buy a dedicated GPS today - put your phone in a waterproof phone holder, add an external battery (get a phone holder big enough for both phone and battery), and check out the excellent "Boating" app from Navionics and download the charts you need for offline use - free or $15/year depending on features).I skimmed this book before we left (I have some orienteering experience so the ideas weren't completely foreign) and took it along for night-time reading. Really illuminating one evening after we fought a 3-knot tidal current in a narrow passage for an hour-and-a-half, right at high tide when I assumed there should be no current. Killen explains very clearly why tides and tidal currents do not necessarily track each other. This allowed me to make sense of our observations from the previous days and come up with reasonably accurate back-of-the envelope current predictions for the last two days that avoided a repeat (and also had us leaving before dawn one day and taking a 2-hour mid-day break on another).Killen convinced me to buy a deck compass - best thing ever, absolutely recommended in addition to your regular hiking compass: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001HYKD8M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1. The other key purchases were a seal-line map "case" (bag really - i go the medium), a waterproof digital watch, and a pair of grease pencils (also from Amazon). Attach the pencil to the map case and the case to your decklines with biners and string.

"Simple Kayak Navigation" by Ray Killan is a very easy read. It is concise, packed with excellent examples, and laced with humor. I will argue that it is the new standard for a sea kayak navigation self-study guide. It may be because Mr. Killan has been teaching coastal navigation to sea kayaker for years and he knows what works and what doesn't in getting the point across.I originally purchased "Fundamentals of Kayak Navigation" by David Burch.Why? Because I was told by several instructors that it is the `standard'. Well, Mr Burch's book makes for a decent desktop reference guide on kayak navigation (i.e. you want to know more about a particular navigation topic). However, if you want to learn sea kayak navigation this book is not well organized and this makes for a very difficult read (i.e. high snooze factor).Update (7/30/2010): Please see my attached comment in regard to an error I found in this book after a second through reading. You may want to print it out and stick it between pages 53-54 as a reference.

A good book, not overly complicated. I own the 2006 edition. There is a (common) error on page 42 where the author states "At the opposite end of the earth, another high-tide bulge forms due to centrifugal force." But centrifugal force is a fictitious force, useful in a reference frame rotating with respect to an inertial frame. However, it neither pushes nor pulls on anything. The high-tide bulge on the opposite side of the earth is due to gravity from the moon decreasing because of the greater distance from the moon compared to the side closer to the moon.

I get a little suspicious when I see (nearly) all five star reviews, but after getting this book and working through it, I have to say it is worth the five stars.Technical water navigation can be intimidating and, granted, I'm not the brightest crayon in the box, but the book does an excellent job of starting at the foundations and building up to greater details/information...and at the same time, keeping the explanation of the information as basic and easy to understand as possible.The book has provided an excellent understanding of the effect of tides/current and wind on water navigation (which sets it apart from land navigation).

East to read and engaging, with good pace and development of the theory through increased detail and complexity as the pages turn. This book is both a great introduction, a well-executed delivery system for gems that you wouldn't think you'd remember but you keep finding in the pockets of your memory and an excellent reference to go back to again and again. Clear and common sense warnings about the risks of poor navigation planning with a notable absence of preaching or doomsaying. I actually recall going outside in the back yard, eleven hours or more from the nearest open-water beach, and taking bearings on landmarks and plotting ferry courses across the local creek (all six feet of width!).

I could not figure out what Jake's reason was for joining CRT or what he was up to...In spite of the lack of evidence, I chose who I thought was the guilty person. I wondered exactly what Jake was up to. I also wondered if Hillary would accept Steven's proposal. I read on, the suspense kept me turning the pages early into the morning hours. I was right about the who, but that did not detract from my reading pleasure. Another five-star read by Ms. Martin!AfterThought: I am going to read HILLARY'S LAST CASE next (the last book in the series). I am really going to miss this series, it has been great. Yes, followers, I am a huge fan and will look into the Ryder & Loveday Mystery Book Series and other titles by this author. Highly recommended!

Oh no, this is the second to last book in this series apparently, and all I can say is I'll be sad to see it finished. I really enjoy the banter between all the characters and also the great policing stories, they are well written and always interesting. Do start this series at book 1 as they are well worth reading.

I enjoyed reading this book. As always, Hillary Green and her team of colleagues are always interesting. The characters were believable and the plot was intense. I can't wait till the next book in the series is available. Great read!

The second last in this series of police procedural novels. More interest in the side stories, with some hints how things might develop. An entertaining read.

So nice to have a strong woman protagonist who is not weird. Good plots. Best to start at beginning of series.

I enjoyed reading all Faith Martin's books featuring the dectective Hilary Green and this is no exception. A really great read!

Love, love these books!! I wish you would write 50 more! A great page turner and I highly recommend them all!

Hate to have just downloaded the last one, every single book is the series is just fabulous.
