Ian S. Markham is a British-born priest of The Episcopal Church who was appointed as Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary in August 2007 and serves as Priest Associate at St. Paul’s Church in Alexandria. I've been an Episcopal since I was baptized in the church and I went through confirmation, but recently I have felt like I didn't really understand my religion. When the topic of religion would come up I would always say I am an Episcopalian, but it was more of a superficial answer. This book is really helping me answer questions I have long had and grappled with. I would definitely recommend for anyone starting out in the church or wanting to know more about what they learned when they were young. This book is really making my spiritual journey much more enjoyable.

I read this book because I've heard that the Episcopal faith is welcoming and I've researched it here and there but wanted to learn more. This was great for the start of my journey. It was thorough but not overwhelming. Half way through this when I realized that my views matched what I was reading I went to a service. This book helped explain parts of the service and gave me a good starting knowledge. I strongly recommend this for those just starting to learn about the faith.

Using this book with an Adult Formation class. It allows for easy discussion and exploration. Provides good information based on Scripture, Tradition and Reason. Good for use with those new to the Episcopal Church, and thowe who want to know and explore more. A true Anglican "You don't have to check your brain at the door" approach

This is a very well-organized book. It serves as a good primer to the Episcopal church. We read it in my Confirmation class, and it really helped prepare me for being baptized. I highly recommend it.

Super cute book!My daughters love this story. It’s important when reading allowed to also do the “voices” of the raja and Rani. :)Originally this story was in my daughters second grade reading book for school and we liked it so much I decided to order it on its own. All the illustrations are beautiful and the large pages make it even more of a quality keepsake book. I’ve got kids in age from 3-14, and they all love this story. The cunning mathematical aspect is just a bonus in the over all “outsmart the boy” concept that my girls all love. I also appreciate the fact that the raja did not propose to Rani, or decide to take her as his wife in the end of the story as a lot of the cultural stories do. And also that the raja admitted that he was wrong and decided to “make up” for his previous faults so to speak.Overall a really cute story that kids of all ages can appreciate. Something different and fun from your typical Disney princess/prince story. And they are learning as they read too!! Bonus.

I'm a guidance counselor. I read this to kids from 1st to 5th grade, and they absolutely love it. I ask kids for guesses as to how much rice she'll end up with when she explains the deal to the Raja. Kids say "200" or "1,000", and are stunned at the power of exponents. Math teachers love the book too. More than anything, I appreciate this book because it helps explain to kids that their accumulated efforts, starting in elementary school, will add up to something amazing over time.

My second year old and I love this book. We took it to his class to read and the whole group of them was entranced. It teaches about the power of doubling in a fascinating book with beautiful artwork. A refreshing change from the usual run of the mill kids' books with their tired story lines and juvenile artwork. Truly a beautiful book and a fascinating story.

I am a fan of "A Mighty Girl" and found this book through their listings and recommendations. I bought it for my granddaughter's fourth birthday because it is about an ordinary girl, not a princess. It is a wonderful folktale based on the importance of standing up for yourself and your community and being willing to do great things by taking a first step toward your convictions. The great math lesson is a bonus! The book is beautifully illustrated and of good quality. I look forward to reading it with my granddaughter for years to come.

The pictures are amazingly beautiful, but what both of my kids (5 y.o. boy and 3 y.o. girl) enjoy are the very very large numbers that we reach... over 1 billion!! Before reading this book, my son was astounded by one hundred. Oh, and yes, he loves counting all (and I mean ALL) the animals on the pages (e.g. 32 brahma bulls, 256 elephants). That means reading WILL take a little while, but it's all worth it to see their face while nearing the final page when Dari reaches a billion grains of rice!! ENJOY!!

A good little read with children. Learning how important it is to share with others and know how to count. I enjoyed reading with my granddaughter and she enjoyed the story. A book that was Something interesting and different like all of humanity.

Love using this story to teach/reteach exponents and illustrate how easily debts grow exponentially. A fable for all ages.

A must for sailors visiting Venezuela and Bonaire. New version is wire bound for easy use aboard. Well written and documented approaches to harbors and difficult anchorages. New version has been updated and corrected.

Really well written and organized. This book lives up to the great reputation that Chris Doyle has built. A great blend of sketch charts, color pictures of areas depicted in charts and good local information. I have not sailed there yet, but I feel this guide will make it much easier.

I have used excellent cruising guides by Chris Doyle while sailing in the eastern caribbean. This guide for Venezuela and Bonaire appears to be equally informative. The mini-charts are clear and provide enough guidance without being cluttered. The only reason I did not give the fifth start is that I have not used the guide in the waters for which it is written - perhaps next season.

During our sailing trip from Martinique to Venezuela we used this book especially because of the detailed and useful information about small harbours and beautyful beaches. I can recommend it very strongly.

This book does a good job in making DirectX (audio) more accessible to beginners.Here is my rating on the Content (5=Best):Accuracy: (4.5/5) So far, I have found minor ommissions in the text. However, the sample code is good enough.Coverage (4/5)The book, as some other reviews pointed out, focuses more on directmusic than direct audio programming. Maybe its just me, but I was expecting more programmer-oriented text. I only found 50% of the book applicable to my programming work.If you are considering buying this book, please check the table of contents. The direct music part is useful if you are considering composing music and/or need some basic understanding of computer sound.Completeness (3/5). This is by no means a complete reference for directx. Keep the SDK documentation handy.The author also fails to explain at times the rationale behind chosing the particular parameters values for various function calls. Expect to do some googling if you plan to understand the code insideo out.Style (5/5): The author's explaination is very clear and concise. A beginner to directx should have no trouble following the text.Overall: 5/5 if you have never touched directx before. 4/5 if you have previous experience with directx programming. You are better off with premier's game audio programming book.

Definitely take them for a drive.For programmers, I found this book to be packed with information on using both the DirectMusic API, and the very powerful (and free) DirectMusic Producer tool, which lets you view, edit, play, and drill down into DirectMusic files/projects. Understanding the Producer tool through this book will give you a much better understanding of the API and the architecture.The CDROM contains several VC++ projects you will find absolutely essential if you are writing your own applications. All the source code is included and is very clean, and the programs are cleverly devised and illustrate key points very clearly.This book contains a lot of information, but if you want to learn how to create dynamic music with this kind of audio quality and sophistication, this is by far the best resource I have found.

Lots of good information for game programming, but nothing useful for general audio programming with Direct Sound. Judging from what I had read about the book, I thought there would be more meat in it on the Direct Sound interface, but there wasn't. There is lots in it if you are doing games and will have sound that you just need to playback, but if you need to do any audio processing with Direct Sound, that isn't in the book. It could really have benefitted from some interface documentation (perhaps an in an appendix) and a bit more low level stuff, especially on effects processing.

Can't get enough of this author... LOVE the short stories of real life.

Excellent, well-written book. I would recommend to pretty much anyone, but especially to moms. Dorcas is a great author! I love the way she finds humor in everyday events. :) Very interesting!!

We all have ordinary days, don't we? Most of us don't make a book out of them, although we would have enough experiences to do so. No doubt they'd be just as fascinating as the days that Dorcas has written about. It's the way we look at life that counts. It's then that ordinary days become extra-ordinary. Because those days are filled with family, friends, daily and not so daily events and longings which give way to heart-stuff.You'll laugh, sniffle some tears, and have a snuggy down-home, comfy sense of 'there's something right with the world sometimes'.Dorcas is a down-home mom, with a down-home sense of delight and right. You'll like her.

Doris Smucker, the author, is a wonderful writer and perhaps only known in the Eugene, Oregon area - but she should be promoted to the rest of the U.S.A. and Canada. Her writings are by no means religious but most interesting about Amish/Mennonite life not only in Oregon but the Midwest and even in Yemen.

Dorcas Smucker does a masterful job of telling simple stories in such a delightful manner. Stories of a teenage driving, a burning van, and an inquisitive two-year old will hold your attention until the last page. I think it is a very good and interesting read and would recommend it to ages 13 and over.
