The ESV Study Bible (ESVSB) now has a sturdy new "competitor" in the NIV Zondervan Study Bible (NIVZSB). How do they stack up against each other? In this review I will note similarities between the two, describe some differences, and survey their approach to 10 controversial topics/texts. (For a much fuller version of this review, covering more topics/texts, visit my website by searching for "Dwight Gingrich" and "NIV Zondervan Study Bible.")SIMILARITIES:Both are massive works, first (NIVZSB) and second (ESVSB) in length among major evangelical study Bibles. Both stand firmly within the conservative evangelical tradition. Both are scholarly works with general editors bearing PhDs from the University of Cambridge—Wayne Grudem for the ESVSB and D. A. Carson for the NIVZSB. My incomplete manual comparison of the contributors to the two study Bibles revealed at least 9 people who contributed to both. Both affirm traditional authorship for contested books such as the Pentateuch (Moses with minor editorial shaping), Isaiah (Isaiah), Matthew (the apostle Matthew), the Pastoral Epistles (Paul), and 2 Peter (the apostle Peter). There are even typographical similarities: both volumes print the sacred text in a single column on each page, with cross references along the outside margins, and with commentary in double columns beneath.Indeed, these two study Bibles are similar enough that the main factor that should influence your choice between the two is your preference in translations.DIFFERENCES:It appears to me that the ESVSB is somewhat stronger than the NIVZSB in these areas: Charts, maps, illustrations, historical information, and general apologetic or bibliological articles. The ESVSB, for example, has separate articles devoted to archeological topics, biblical languages, biblical doctrine, biblical ethics, and the perspectives that various denominations, religions, and cults bring to Scripture.A comparison of the introductions to Exodus shows that the one in the ESVSB is slightly longer (six pages to the NIVZSB’s five), with more attention given to the historical reliability of the book and to its literary features. Similarly, the NIVZSB introduction for Galatians is three pages long, while the ESVSB’s covers four pages, providing a little more historical data, a superior map, and more space devoted to charts rather than photographs. The differences, I stress, are differences of degree. The similarities here outweigh the differences, but I give the ESVSB the blue ribbon for visual helps and breadth of topics addressed in articles. The NIVZSB is stronger in at least one way: its emphasis on biblical theology. This makes sense, given the editors of the two volumes: Wayne Grudem’s most significant authorial effort is his massive and massively popular Systematic Theology, while D. A. Carson is better known for both his commentaries and his editorial work in books such as the Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament and the series New Studies in Biblical Theology. The NIVZSB’s focus on biblical theology is most evident in the twenty-eight articles found before the concordance. Most articles are two or three pages long; together they cover sixty-six pages. Since these articles are the most unique part of this new study Bible, I will list them here, with their authors:The Story of the Bible: How the Good News About Jesus Is Central – Timothy KellerThe Bible and Theology – D. A. CarsonA Biblical-Theological Overview of the Bible – D. A. CarsonThe Glory of God – James M. Hamilton Jr.Creation – Henri A. G. BlocherSin – Kevin DeYoungCovenant – Paul R. WilliamsonLaw – T. D. AlexanderTemple – T. D. AlexanderPriest – Dana M. HarrisSacrifice – Jay A. SklarExile and Exodus – Thomas Richard WoodThe Kingdom of God – T. D. AlexanderSonship – D. A. CarsonThe City of God – T. D. AlexanderProphets and Prophecy – Sam StormsDeath and Resurrection – Philip S. JohnstonPeople of God – Moisés SilvaWisdom – Daniel J. EstesHoliness – Andrew David NaselliJustice – Brian S. RosnerWrath – Christopher W. MorganLove and Grace – Graham A. ColeThe Gospel – Greg D. GilbertWorship – David G. PetersonMission – Andreas J. KöstenbergerShalom – Timothy KellerThe Consummation – Douglas J. MooWhile I disagree with minor points in some of these articles, I find myself agreeing with a much higher percentage of what is said here than with what is said in most systematic theologies. That is the benefit of staying closer to the language of Scripture itself. Most of these articles are very useful and some (such as Keller’s opening one) are even moving. I have a niggling question about the place of such essays in a study Bible (how many readers will really find and benefit from this content in their specific moments of exegetical need?), but reading them can certainly make one a better reader of Scripture.CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS/TEXTS:On the central matters of the gospel, both study Bibles are solid. They promote the core gospel message well, along with the necessary human response to God’s grace. And, though both are generally Calvinistic throughout, they do not emphasize this interpretive lens in a way that overshadows the biblical message itself. Well done. But how does they handle more controversial passages—texts which theologically conservative Christians sometimes disagree about? And how does the NIVZSB compare to the ESVSB in its handling of these texts?Creation: These study Bibles hold similar positions here: (1) On "days": The ESVSB presents five readings that “faithful interpreters” offer regarding the days of creation but refrains from assessing them. The NIVZSB says the mention of “days” “emphasizes the logical development of God’s creation more than it pinpoints the chronological development” (p. 20). (2) On "kinds": Both suggest this is a general term that (so they imply) leaves the door open for theistic evolution. (3) Both affirm that Adam and Eve were historical persons.Divorce and Remarriage: Both study Bibles underscore at Matthew 5:31-32 and Matthew 19:1-12 that “Jesus is reaffirming God’s original intention that marriage be permanent and lifelong” (NIVZSB, p. 1970). They teach that both divorce and remarriage are “possible but never ideal” (NIVZSB, p. 1969) in cases where one marriage partner engages in “sexual immorality” (Matt. 5:32; 19:9). It seems that the NIVZSB may interpret “sexual immorality” slightly more broadly, saying that the Greek term “porneia [is] the broadest term for sexual sin. It refers to sexual relations with any other person besides one’s monogamous heterosexual spouse” (p. 1939). The ESVSB, rather than speaking of “sexual relations,” specifies “sexual intercourse,” possibly a narrower term. On the other hand, the NIVZSB takes a more rigid stance than the ESVSB on 1 Corinthians 7:10-16: “There are only two options for a divorced woman: (1) remain unmarried or (2) reconcile with her husband.” It acknowledges regarding verse 15 ("the brother or sister is not bound in such circumstances”) that “it is often suggested that this allows a deserted Christian spouse to remarry” but states that “this interpretation is not plausible.”Homosexuality: Both study Bibles state clearly that homosexual relations are sinful. An NIVZSB comment on Romans 1:26-27 succinctly states that “in making humans [sic!] beings male and female…, God manifests his intention for human sexual relations” (p. 2293).Gender Roles: It will surprise some readers to learn that the NIVZSB takes nearly the same stance on gender roles as the ESVSB does. In all the gender texts I survey, the NIVZSB and ESVSB adopt nearly the same position—gender role difference in marriage and church are timeless principles, men are called to authoritative and loving leadership in home and church while women are called to submit, and women may not be overseers but may perhaps be (non-teaching) deacons. The NIVZSB does apparently leave the door open for women to teach men in non-authoritative positions in the church, but otherwise the differences between the study Bibles are differences of tone more than position, with the ESVSB giving a more rigorous defense of the position shared by both.Nonresistance and Relationship to Government: On Matthew 5:38-48 the NIVZSB says that “Jesus is prohibiting retaliation for wrongs experienced.” It explains that a slap on the cheek is “a common Jewish insult by a superior to a subordinate, not an aggressor’s blow.” (p. 1939). This brief interpretation leaves the door open for Christians to use deadly force in other circumstances, though the NIVZSB does not explicitly state this. The ESVSB presents this position much more clearly: “Jesus is not prohibiting the use of force by governments, police, or soldiers when combating evil… One should not return an insulting slap, which would lead to escalating violence. In the case of a more serious assault, Jesus’ words should not be taken to prohibit self-defense…, for often a failure to resist a violent attack leads to even more serious abuse.” This difference is also evident in places like Romans 12-13, where the NIVZSB gently questions whether governments have the right to administer capital punishment, while the ESVSB suggests one way believers can "overcome evil with good" is through military or police force.Spiritual Gifts: I haven’t found any clear statement where the NIVZSB strongly affirms whether or not the “miraculous” spiritual gifts continue to this day. This is remarkable, given that Sam Storms, a strong continuationist, was chosen to author an essay on “Prophets and Prophecy.” In this article he only vaguely hints at his own position by some present-tense references to prophecy. The ESVSB adopts a similar stance: “Bible-believing Christians disagree as to whether the gift of tongues ceased after the apostolic age of the early church, or whether tongues is a spiritual gift that should continue to be practiced today.” Clearly, both Bibles are aiming to avoid a fight over this volatile topic.Foreknowledge, Predestination, Election: At Romans 8:29-30 the NIVZSB gives two possible explanations for God’s foreknowledge: “Perhaps ‘knew ahead of time’…: God ‘foreknew’ who would believe in him and so predestined them. But ‘know’ probably has the biblical sense of ‘enter into relationship with’…: God chose to initiate a relationship with people ‘before the creation of the world’… and on that basis ‘predestined’ them” (p. 2307). The ESVSB only presents the second option, and emphasizes that “predestined” means “predetermined” and that God’s calling is “effective,” not merely an invitation. At Romans 9 comments are similar. At Ephesians 1 both are strongly Calvinistic. At 1 Timothy 2:4, the ESVSB has a lengthy note that describes both Arminian and Calvinist interpretations without taking sides (surprise!), ending thus: “However one understands the extent of the atonement, this passage clearly teaches the free and universal offer of salvation to every single human being; ‘desires’ shows that this offer is a bona fide expression of God’s good will.” On this Timothy verse the NIVZSB suggests that “what God ‘wants’ may be hindered by lack of human faith.” This last statement opens the door to non-Calvinistic interpretations (but does not demand them). The NIVZSB and the ESVSB are both similarly Calvinistic regarding God’s choice and offer of salvation, but with occasional surprising flexibility.Eternal Security: At Hebrews 6:4-6 the NIVZSB notes the “great difficulties for interpretation,” describes several common interpretations, and finally concludes that “those who do not hold on to faith in Christ show that their experience was superficial rather than genuine” (p. 2503). The ESVSB directs us to a note at Hebrews 3:14, which says “Scripture is clear… that true believers cannot lose their salvation.” At Hebrews 7:25 the NIVZSB argues that the fact that Jesus “always lives to intercede for” believers “precludes their turning back” (p. 2507). But such statements are relatively rare in the NIVZSB. At 1 John 2:19 the NIVZSB makes no clear theological deductions, while the ESVSB states that “this implies that those who are truly saved will never abandon Christ.” The ESVSB makes similar statements at John 6:40, John 10:28, 2 Peter 1:10, and Jude 1:2—all places where the NIVZSB makes no clear assertions about whether believers can ever lose their salvation.Sabbath and Lord’s Day: These study Bibles take a similar stance on this topic. At Exodus 20:8-11 the ESVSB makes no Christian application, while the NIVZSB mentions that the Sabbath “anticipates the experience of rest through faith in Christ” (p. 155). At Colossians 2:16-17 the ESVSB says “it is debated whether the Sabbaths in question included the regular seventh-day rest of the fourth commandment, or were only the special Sabbaths of the Jewish festal calendar.” At Galatians 4:10 the ESVSB notes that some “believe that the weekly Sabbath command is not temporary but goes back to God’s pattern in creation.” The NIVZSB whispers (with dramatically different tone than Paul!) that “treating certain times as more sacred than others… is not an essential feature of Christian faith” (p. 2390). Thus, unlike the ESVSB, the NIVZSB apparently never suggests the Sabbath command may still apply. However, it seems a little more open to seeing Sunday worship as being normative (see description of the practice of the early church at 1 Cor. 16:2 and Rev. 1:10).Israel and the Church: Both are inconsistent on this topic. The NIVZSB's “Exile and Exodus” article presents one perspective strongly: “As the only perfectly obedient Israelite...—a faithful remnant of one—Jesus (not the unbelieving nation) is the sole heir of all of the covenantal promises made to Abraham, Israel, and David... Life everlasting, a land flowing with milk and honey, a posterity as numerous as the stars, a perpetual reign over all creation, and uninhibited access to the Father’s presence all belong exclusively to him” (p. 2661). Both agree that at 1 Peter 1:1 Peter “implicitly claims that the church of Jesus Christ is the new Israel, made up of both Jewish and Gentile believers in Christ” (NIVZSB, p. 2539; ESVSB says "explicitly"). However, both Bibles (perhaps especially the ESVSB) also suggest multiple times that seeing a future role for an ethnic Israel is a legitimate interpretative approach.CONCLUDING OBSERVATIONS:My general sense is that the NIVZSB is slightly more careful than the ESVSB to avoid offending its readers—or, to state things more positively, that it is aiming to please a slightly larger readership. On the one hand it is equally careful to adhere to the basic evangelical commitments (things such as traditional authorship and the historical reliability of Scripture), while also feeling equally free to adopt recent approaches to synthesizing the Bible and science (no firm stance on the days of Genesis or the question of evolution). On the other hand, it seems slower to affirm some of the more fundamentalist ideas of evangelicalism (things such as capital punishment or a special plan for the future of ethnic Israel), it feels slightly more cautious as it affirms some points of evangelical doctrinal dispute (inability of true believers to fall from the faith, distinct gender roles in the church), and it is sometimes slower to pick sides at all regarding what the text means for today (the Christian and the military). But such differences are comparatively minor when set within the widely diverse translations and study Bibles currently on the market. Both the NIVZSB and the ESVSB are solidly conservative evangelical and among the very best in their class. I am very happy to recommend both for your judicious use.-----------The ESVSB is still about as good as a study Bible gets. I give both 4-1/2 out of 5 stars.

I'm struck by the sweet, old-fashioned look of this Bible. Like a classic book, the cover is cloth-covered board. It's smaller than a "regular" Bible (see pictures- I added a quarter for perspective). The smaller size keeps the weight down, but look at the pictures to be certain the print is not too small for your comfort.Inside:This is not a study Bible. There's a few introductory pages at the front of the book. The back of the book includes an explanation of salvation, a short synopsis of every book of the Bible, and a one year reading plan. This Bible (as the title suggests) is designed for journaling. Each page features two columns of scripture accompanied by a column for writing (or art). The lines are faint... I had to get pretty close to try to capture them with the camera. They are small, narrow lines. I appreciate the faintness of the lines for the pages where I want to add artwork instead of just notes. The pages are still traditional-Bible-thin. I wouldn't paint without some kind of gesso (my opinion, your mileage may vary). You'll still need to consider carefully the mediums (pens, highlighters, etc.) you use if you don't want it to go through to the other page.I appreciate the cardboard slipcover. I feel like it would keep my journaling Bible safe in a tote bag if I wanted to be outside or on the road with it.Overall, it's simply charming. I feel inspired to start reading right away.

I love this bible. It may be the most beautiful book I've ever owned. I am new to the bible journaling/illustrated faith community and this bible works perfectly! The pages are surprisingly strong enough for my very wet water color painting. I place a piece of card stock behind the page I'm working on so that the moisture doesn't seep through to the other pages. I'm so very pleased with this bible, it's very well made and will last through the generations as I plan to pass this down to my children. I look forward to buying another Crossway journaling bible once I fill this one up. This has been such a great way for me to get the word into my spirit, I'm excited for what our Poppa God will show me through this form of worship. ''

I love this study Bible. It's very helpful in understanding what is going on in the part of the bible you are reading. The ESV is an awesome translation. It is very accurate and easy to read. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to study and learn more about the bible.

I LOVE this Bible! First, the pages are nice and thick so that I am able to use my Tim Holtz Distress Markers with no bleed thru...and I erase A LOT, (I use Pilot's Frixon Erasable Pens) so much so that I am shocked that I haven't ripped through the pages! Second, of course is all the additional space! I am able to draw little illustrations that are so much fun to see when flipping in search of something. The one thing I don't love is the microscopic point size used for the text! Not for everyday reading, for sure!I just uploaded a quick video of what I have done in the first week of owning my ESV Journal Bible...please, check it out!

"As the barista set my espresso down, he smiled, so I decided it might be appropriate to try out one of my practiced phrases.'Mi sono appena trasferita a Montepulciano.' I've just moved to Montepulciano, I smiled, resisting the urge to apologize for my horrible Italian.'Perche?' he asked, looking genuinely puzzled. I'd fielded this question a lot in February when I'd said I was moving here. Locals seemed bewildered that anyone would want to come and live in their town.'Sono scrittrice.' I told him. I'm a writer. Then I added, 'Cercavo pace.' I was looking for peace. This didn't begin to express all the reasons why I loved Italy, but it was all I could manage. I would have liked to explain that I was supposed to be here, but I didn't know exactly how to say that, which is just as well because I probably seemed kooky enough already.'Ma per sempre?' he insisted.Yes, I told him, I was planning to be here forever. He looked at me speculatively, then extended his hand to welcome me and introduce himself: 'Benvenuta! Sono Stefano.'"This is an example of how Jennifer Criswell writes. She's honest, sincere, and very down to earth. Her tale of being an ex-pat isn't like those others where someone with a lot of money buys an old farm house to renovate and moans and groans about carpenters not showing up, or water heaters not heating the water, or being unable to get over the usual bureaucratic pitfalls they inevitably have. No. Jenny, as the locals come to call her, tells the reader just what it's like to hunt for an affordable apartment to rent, wait for most of her belongings to be mailed from New York City to Montepulciano, run frighteningly low on funds, worry about getting a job (any job), and has to eat canned tuna every day in order to survive.Through it all, she manages to stay mostly lighthearted and optimistic. Jenny does find comfort in her best friend which happens to be her Weimaraner Cindy. Both girl and dog manage to win the hearts of Italians and other ex-pats alike. Jenny also is a pretty decent cook and enjoys baking brownies and other tasty treats for her new found friends.I enjoyed this book and think others here looking for something that's light and entertaining will too. O...Jenny writes a blog with more of her interesting adventures in and thoughts about living in Italy. Look her up. 4 Stars

I enjoyed this book. It wasn't my favorite, but it was "real". Its a story of someone without buckets of money to move on whim. This woman took time and effort to plan this move out, and stuck it out with little financial help until things worked out with the slow moving Italian government process.. Much more relatable to my world than the wealthy American moves to Europe crowd, who then all write books. Not much about their lives connects with mine. Jennifer actually struggled to fulfill her dream, with many helps and hindrances along the way. I actually wondered when I got to the end, how things worked out for her and her dog. I have not wondered at all about the others. Its good to know you CAN do it without tons of money, and buying and renovating .

One of my favorite genre of books is non-fictional travel. A good writer can take you with them to experience a place, culture, the food, and the people. Jennifer Criswell's book is an amazing story that chronicles her adventure in transitioning from a lawyer in the United States to living a new life in the heart of Tuscany in the small and historical hilltop town of Montepulciano. She is honest and open regarding her experiences such that the reader feels like a friend. Her style of writing is excellent for conveying what life is really like, the incredible beauty of the land, the food and wine, and the challenges of a new language. My wife and I were so inspired by her story, we have decided to take a two week vacation to Montepulciano to attend the Italian language school there and experience a tiny part of the l'avventura she has written about. I would highly recommend this book. There are few books I enjoy re-reading but this is definitely one.

This was such an enjoyable book and easy to read. I felt like I was sitting with a girlfriend chatting over a bottle of Pinot Grigio and hearing about her recent move to Italy.Anyone who visits Italy probably has at the very least a fleeting thought of packing up and moving there. This is a story of someone who did just that-packed up and set down roots in a foreign country. But instead of the oh so overdone fairy tale of a young woman who moves to Italy, renovates a Tuscan villa, falls in love and lives happily ever after, this book is a realistic account of what it takes to pack up and move to somewhere where you don't know anyone or even speak the language. How do you learn the language? What do you do for work when your funds get crucially low? How do you navigate the long and convoluted process of gaining citizenship? We don't think about the day to day when we're daydreaming! This book, however, finds complete entertainment in the minutiae of daily life.I found this book to be very well written and not overdone in any way. It was peppered with just enough italian words, the stories didn't seem over embellished, and character development was well done. I enjoyed it very much and I'm looking forward to the sequal...or at least another book by this adventurous author.

Although I have read several "moving to a foreign place and starting over" type stories, I thoroughly enjoyed this story and felt very engaged by the author's determination to become a legal resident of the Tuscany region of Italy. Not being able to do so would effectively mean that she would not be able to financially support herself for very long and would ultimately have to abandon her dream of living and writing in Italy. Along the way the book's main character had a series of ups and downs including making some very public mistakes and having some very disappointing experiences with people she had hoped would become friends. I consistently found myself looking forward to reading daily about what would happen next. Certainly a great read for anyone who has ever imagined themselves having an adventure of this type.

About the Author

Tanino Liberatore (Author) : Italian artist Liberatore is best known for his highly controversial graphic novel series RanXerox but he is also a well respected and successful illustrator in many fields. Although his work could be called realistic, it has elements that go far beyond the traditional boundaries of the realistic genre. With the strange settings of his stories and the unusual coloring (for instance with lipstick) Liberatore's work could also be called bizarre, an impression that is reinforced by his use of "ultra-violence" in RanXerox but not found in this art book.

Hart doesn't spend a lot of time addressing the arguments advanced by today's professional atheists. What he does have to say about them -- Hitchens, Harris, Dawkins, and Dennett -- is no more than they deserve. He has bigger fish to fry. Overall, he gives us corrected accounts (as opposed to the itself antiquated story of "Dark Ages" and of "Galileo" ) of the past two thousand years of European history, and he does this with icy-cool scholarship, scathing irony, and great good humor. In the past month I've been through this book about five times, confirming Hart's historical facts and quotes from church fathers. This is a satisfyingly brilliant book. It is an overview of how the last 70 years or so of historical research and reflection have transformed the notions of European history that were conventional, accepted, and even prevalent as recently as the early 20th century.N

Very well argued presentation. Scholarship is of a very high standard and those who claim to be in this debate should read and ponder this books contents - on whatever side they sit. Alistair McGrath presents shorter versions of the arguments, so reading McGrath's more popularized writings and oral presentations will demonstrate that there is need to have Hart's depth of analysis to fully realize just how deluded the Christian antagonists really are, especially their poor scholarship. This detail lies behind McGrathWell done David Bentley Hart

This book is not the nasty polemic the title might imply. Aspects I appreciated: it provides a needed historical presentation of the cultural/religious context and moral impact of the dawn and first centuries of Christianity. Also, the book presents in short sections (not a major theme) a bracing analysis of the nihilistic abyss that is the modern alternative. Finally, the last few pages contemplating Christians' metaphorical return to the desert were very moving. As one who loves language, I found this book adequately challenging and certainly targeted to the educated reader.

Well presented and researched facts. Destroyed a lot of myths quoted by those attacking Christianity. Gave good insight to what Christianity has brought to the world in 2000 years. The downside is some of the reading can become tedious because of all the facts given. The arguments are insightful but go to considerable lengths and become repetitive at times. All in all, a most useful book to have and a wealth of indisputable research.

This is a very intelligent and well written book that looks inside secularism and modernism and that their shaking off of the shackles of the Christian faith is very seriously to our detriment as a society

D B Hart's clever and mellifluous prose covers a caustic critique of the New Atheism and the prevailing secularism. The book is an education in early church history and the cataclysmic change that Christianity brought to Western society. A change that, despite what Dawkins and his ilk claim, transformed our culture and gave us an understanding of the world based on Love, goodness and Truth. Hart shows up the threadbare hope of the New Athiests who consider a denouncement of the Christian Revolution as progress. Instead, without it, Hart shows, we are left with a culture devoid of anything but the aimless and banal, and which end is monstrous, envisaged in the minds of godless ethicists such as Peter Singer. I recommend this book be read by everyone facing the assault of popular secularism - the emperors of the day truly have no clothes.

Arrived faster than expected. Am using it in a men’s study group. Quite an interesting read and generates a lively discussion.

As others have said, the title does not do justice to the book. Hart does give short shrift to the popular atheists of our day, but the book is really about something else. Drawing especially on a deep understanding of the early centuries of the Church and its cultural context, Hart offers an erudite essay that takes on the view--pervasive since the Enlightenment--that Christianity was a violent and irrational interlude between the cultured classical world and a modernity of reason and science.Hart accepts that Christianity was an interruption, or irruption, but sees it as one that revolutionized our understanding of what it means to be human. It was the most profound revolution in human history. Hart points out that, unlike today's evangelical atheists, Nietzsche hated Christianity for what it actually was, a religion the God of which is Love and which regards charity as the highest virtue. It was, he understood, unique and subversive in its insistence on God's universal love--beyond ties to place, tribe, nation, or ruler--and the duty of Christians to help the sick, poor, weak and oppressed, to visit prisoners, and to respect the intrinsic dignity and worth of all human life. Its adherents often disappoint, as Hart insists, like all other human individuals and institutions in our fallen world. But in developing a (highly sophisticated) understanding of the God-man in whom God became human so that humans may become divine, Christians of the early centuries overthrew older views of the infinite distance between God and humanity and rejected the arbitrariness and immorality of the pagan gods. Christians established a world-view that saw the world as law-governed and humans as subject to a natural law "written on their hearts" and--in great contrast to pagan religions--a social ethic. This made scientific discovery--initially largely the work of churchmen and, like Galileo and Newton, devout Christians--a reading of the book of nature that God had written. No longer could we say, except in the depths of despair like the brutally blinded Gloucester in King Lear, "As flies to wanton boys are we to the gods; They kill us for their sport." Christianity, says hart, is a religion of joy and hope, as opposed to the prevailing pagan sadness and resignation. So Hart's argument takes us from the pagan world, with its lack of a sense of the arrow of time and hence of the future and of the purpose and direction of life, its moral callousness toward the weak and oppressed, through the Christian revolution in which king and slave, aristocrat and worker, were of equal worth as sharing in the divinity of the God-man. The Church--again unique in its separation of religion from the state--suffers (what Hart sees as) the catastrophe of being adopted as the religion of the Roman Empire. But unlike the pagan cults, the Church retains its subversive aspect. It insists on the submission even of emperors and kings to God. The long struggle (as well as collusion) between church and state ends in defeat for the Church as Protestant rulers place themselves at the head of their national churches and Catholic states like France and Spain completely subordinate the church to the monarchy--even in Spain's case insisting on the Inquisition as an instrument of "nation-building." The long march of the hypertrophied state culminates in the secularist horrors of the 20th century. Indeed, Hart argues, the modern secular state has a unique penchant or drive to violence on a vast scale that makes the violence attributed (much of it wrongly) to Christianity appear minuscule by comparison.Hart's view of our present cultural situation is exceedingly--and for a Christian one might say excessively--bleak. He sees a post-Christian world no longer restrained by any conception of the equal dignity and worth of the individual. The moral restraints that are rooted in the Christian social ethic but have no solid basis in secularist ideologies, survive as memories for awhile but then fade. A foretaste of this world appears in the enthusiasm with which progressives and liberals of all kinds took up the eugenics movement in the U.S., which the Nazis adopted and learned from. The twentieth century, with its court-mandated sterilizations, lobotomies, scientific experiments on prisoners and denial of treatment to poor Black men in the interests of science in the U.S. as well as the unrestrainedly murderous anti-Christian regimes (atheist or neo-pagan)of Russia and Germany, shows us the post-Christian future. It is a world in which the God who is Love is dead, science is freed from moral restraint, and humans become objects of manipulation.Fortunately, there are developments that might make us want to temper such pessimism, not in the sense that Hart is wrong about the dehumanizing implications of a loss of the social ethic or spiritual depth and beauty of Christianity, but in the sense that secularization is not a done deal, not beyond academia and elite opinion anyway. Christianity is growing rapidly in Africa, Asia, and Russia, has not succumbed (except in its liberal forms) to secularization in the U.S., and rumors of its demise are greatly exaggerated even in Europe, according some accounts (God's Continent: Christianity, Islam, and Europe's Religious Crisis (The Future of Christianity)).But this is a profound and serious book that invites us to confront what is at stake in the secularist trends among Western elites.

I read this book all the time in middle school (I'm in college now) and it really helped get me by through the rough times and imagined my life like Hawk's through this wonderful book. It's friendly for all ages and has truth, no sugar coating stories. After years of tracking down this, I'm glad I finally get to say I own a copy instead of continuously renting from my local library like I have for so long. Couldn't recommend this enough.

Great book, Tony's way of narrating his own story is so funny and great, full of anecdotes and life lessons. Such a humble dude.Great pictures also!

I am a fat forty-year-old ex-skater now, but I loved reading Tony's book and getting some insight as to what was going on during the years when he was idolized for his insane abilities. Being from the East Coast the only thing we ever saw Tony in was the Bones Brigade videos back in the '80s and his scenes always blew everyone's minds. It was cool to read his thoughts during those times and see what he was going through. He was always a good ambassador for skating and it is nice to see him doing well in his post-skating career. Get the book, read it.

Been a tony hawk fan since the late 90's. I really enjoyed this book. A must read for any skater. Didn't discover how big "The 900" was till i read this book after i saw it on TV on the X games. He even tells the story about the 9.

I've always been a fan of Tony Hawk, I first heard of him back in the 80s and I've been a keen follower of his career ever since. This book is well written with some good laughs and gives an insight into Tony's ups and downs throughout his career. When most people think of Tony Hawk they automatically think he had an easy run to where he is, this book will show you just how much hard work he put in (which he still does today) and the adversity he overcame to become the legend he now is.Totally inspired me to get back on my board a lot more regularly. Tony teaches us that age is no barrier to skating, it just takes a bit longer to get back up.

Good read if you're into this stuff.

Great book! My other nephew loves skateboarding and also loved this book. I recommend it if you too love skateboarding.

This book to me, gives you an inside look at one of the heroes of my childhood. Whether you're currently a skateboarder, or not. This book goes through the life of Tony Hawk who is a name I'm sure we've all heard of at some point in our life.I'd recommend this book to any kid in school who is looking for somebody to write a report about or to anyone who might be interested in knowing what happened behind the scenes in Tony Hawk's life.

I enjoyed the ideas in this book (though I really didn't learn anything new) and in general I liked that the author worked to make the science approachable. The author obviously loves language and finds ways to bring pop culture references in to help non-scientifically minded readers understanding. I do think that this will in the longer term give the book a "dated" feel and someday make it unreadable by younger audiences. The problem I had was that at times the author seemed to be more focused on finding cute ways to say things than on the ideas themselves. The biggest reason for this seemed to be to avoid scaring any unwary readers with "math" or "hard" science. The best example of this comes right at the end when the author talks about the Drake equation. Rather than just give the equation and tell what the variables mean (to me a wonderful way to understand how astronomy intersects historical sciences), the author mentions, almost off-handedly, a few of the variables and then only really explains the last one. In all, a good way to bring the science fearful into a basic understanding that could be nurtured into interest or even love. However, probably not a book for someone who has seen their way through less flowery, more information dense tomes.

The author has to be in the top 10% of all I.Q.s. The attempt to personalize "science and scientists" by cutesipie finishes to many major statements gets a little distracting after awhile. But, the points made and the education enhancement I received made putting up with her 'popular' writing style.

Excellent book for anyone who was interested in science as a child and had it slowly leached out of them by the public school system. This book provides and starting point for the adult whose interest has been rekindled. Her writing is a bit facile, but it's still a great read.

Entertaining, enlightening, clever. Really terrific narrative that puts much of the science world in a pragmatic easy read. Atoms, molecules, space, energy, evolution....this book covers it all.

Sometimes the best explainers of a topic are outsiders or laymen, rather than practitioners in the field. The author isn't a scientist so she can still see complex topics from the layman's viewpoint. This is, simply put, a great book. It covers not only the nuts and bolts of science (what is the doppler effect?) but the philosophy behind science (why does the scientific method do such a good job at explaining our world?)The writing is breezy and not stilted, using metaphors instead of math to explain difficult topics. The chapter on evolutionary biology is my favorite, and covers not only the mechanics of evolution but the controversy, and explains the tenets (and bad reasoning) of the Intelligent Design movement. After reading this chapter it seemed like a veil lifted from my eyes, and I got excited and yelled, "I get it!"A couple of my favorite quotes:From the chapter on evolutionary biology: "Natural selection is the force that transforms drift and randomness into the gift of extravagance. It takes the doctrinaire sloth of the second law of thermodynamics, the tendency of every system to get frowzier over time, and hammers it into a magic, all-purpose, purpose-making machine that turns around and breaks entropy at the knees."From the chapter on astronomy, talking about the search for extraterrestrials: "We are such indefatigable telecommunicators that the world and its 6.5 billion content providers don't feel like enough, and we can't help but wonder, Who else can we call?"The book is wonderful and definitely is worth reading several times. My only gripes: there is the occasional reference to some current pop culture celebrity, and I think this will make an otherwise timeless book seem dated in a few years. Also I think that the book would have been enhanced by an occasional illustration. For instance, the explanation of the galaxies flying away from each other is much easier understood if you actually see a picture of a balloon with dots on it to represent the galaxies.

Natalie Angier's The Canon was... decent. I was excited to read it since I definitely don't have a healthy grasp on science. In the beginning, she does a pretty good job writing simply but without making you feel like an idiot. As the book went on, however, I began to get frustrated. She routinely works in cutesy little rhymes and sayings that started to drive me crazy. As the concepts dealt with became more complex, her penchant for the poetic was really irritating. She would be talking about... I don't know, atoms maybe... and she would say something like "the size of a bird or this word or all the nerds in class." Please remember you're writing for adults who are intelligent and choosing to further educate themselves about science. I don't want to be driven off by cute.In the end, I still think she didn't quite simplify some of the deeper concepts to a level I was really comfortable with. Maybe I am truly a science idiot, but I doubt it.Verdict: C-

I love her work. She's one of the best Science writers around. Well-informed, presents the info very well. She has a sneaky sense of humor that keeps me chuckling while I learn.

I enjoyed most of the book but parts got a little cumbersome.

Just got the book and I am enjoying it big time. The author covers the subject of financial modeling and financial forecasting in an easy-to-understand, here is how you do it approach. I especially enjoyed the discussion and examples about planning, designing, and presenting the results of your financial forecasting and modeling work. This is the part many professionals gloss over but it is really the secret to adding value for the users of your modeling work.

Because most of us learn the more intricate details of Excel through hands-on application, it is very possible to dually develop advanced proficiency in some areas, and overlook some of the basics. By approaching these topics with a quirky academic style, Fairhust easily conveys best practice principles and arms even some advanced users with tricks that stand to improve speed and efficiency. It saved me a lot of guesswork figuring out why specific outcomes differed by workstation, in an office where not everybody was on the same Excel page. This could easily be the best $20 I have ever spent.

I consider my Excel skills to be fairly well developed. The author used many core functions-some advance-and showed how to use them in real-world applications. Some interesting examples of how to model business situations including a fairly intricate depreciation schedule. I was disappointed in the integrated three statement model which I felt was an oversimplification. In the end I bought a copy for my math major son who will graduate this year and does not yet have good Excel skills. I saw this book as a fast way for him to learn practical application of Excel and some of its more complex functions.

I've been searching for inexpensive means to learn financial modeling and this book is a great way to start, especially since the author provides templates to practice throughout the book. It's like an instructional guide to start modeling. There's a lot of resources out there from books to online courses and found that a few books and time trumps pricey courses. If you want to dabble in financial modeling before diving in then this is a great start!

This one was a bit tedious if you're already good at excel. By the time I got to the meat of what I was looking for- how to do financial modeling in excel- I was already bored out of my mind.If you're already good at excel skim the first 10 chapters, there's a few good best practices buried in there, but the actual content starts at chapter ~12. :/

Does not include such essentials as IRR (internal rate of return). If you are trying to figure out what financial analysis is, this will help. If you already know, the Excel help screens will be more helpful.

Good book. Very simple.I initially felt awkward reading a "Dummies'" book, since I use excel extensively at work. To my surprise it reads nothing like dummies' series. Which now has me really worried about myself!

Great book, not just for novices. Includes step by step instructions with pictures.
