I am sure I am going to love this book, because I love the first two, but as of today 04.04.2017, the kindle version is unreadable. I let Amazon know but so far no update.
What an excellent graphic book! Right from the start, this is an engaging book. There is enough white space between pictures that the novel does not seem overwhelmed with illustrations on each page. This is in black and white and quite readable. The information is fascinating. There are maps that illustrate how China was divided. This graphic novel covers, Confuscism, neo Confuscism, the Civil Service and the most interesting of all the Mongols.The Civil Service and the Testing were well written. I also liked the author describing the different views of Taoism vs Confuscism. JIng Liu writes succinctly but also with some flair.Ghengis Khan's reign is described well, to include his amazing victory at Badger Mouth. Also Kublai Khan is included along with Marco Polo. This book is actually one in a series of books about China. It will capture the interests of younger and older readers. The graphics are eye-catching and the material is interesting.I plan on reading more in the series.
I am going about this backwards, but not by choice. I was sent the 4th book in this series to review some time ago and now have been sent the third. I have to immediately say this - the experience of the fourth book was improved by reading the third - suggesting as a series this may be a decent way to encapsulate the vast Chinese history. No one should approach a book like this expecting to gain great detail of the subject matter, it is the Readers Digest approach to history if Reader's Digest wanted to do something shorter than usual. But, for what it is, it serves a good purpose. The art is acceptable, though not outstanding, and at time seems to be poorly related to the text, but usually the sketch style approach works very well with the prose and you get a tidbit of insight in a way that might actually allow you to remember it. For a "I want to know more about China's history but don't want to work to hard at it" person, these are right on target and worth the read.

I enjoy Chinese history and non-fiction graphic novels about people, places, and history. This book is written well and covers a *lot* of topics. This period of history in China is very intricate and it would take a very large tome to uncover all the details of the era covered here. Jing Lui has done a good job of explaining the situation at this time, the wars, the different empires and leaders moving on to the point where the Mongols had their largest empire. The book is black and white and has distinctly Chinese illustration: a bit comic-like with a dash of manga. The book has a lot of text and isn't like a traditional graphic novel but it is one, nevertheless. Pages form anywhere from one huge to three smaller frames. The text is mostly given in the narration with approx. one speech bubble per two-page spread. While the topic is complicated the book's design is not. The illustrations are clean and neat and enhance the text with graphic representations of facts in map or chart form.
I got a copy of this book through the Amazon Vine program to review. I don’t have a ton to say about this book. It is a decent comic history of Japan for the time period listed in the title. The history was easy to follow and the graphic diagrams help you to understand what’s going on.The whole book was interesting and I found it surprisingly engaging given that I am not a huge fan of reading about history. My 10 year old son read it as well and said it was interesting and he liked it.Overall a well done book about Chinese history that is easy to follow and will appeal to middle grade and older readers. I would recommend if you are interested in learning about Chinese history.
It is easy to grasp the concepts in this graphic comic history book. Great way to learn, and there is nothing dull or boring about it. Even starting at book 3, I was able to pick up the learning style quickly.Contrary to the beautiful artwork on the cover, I found the inside graphics to be more functional than pretty. And do not get the idea that these books are made for browsing or that they make nice "coffee table" books. They are small books, soft-covered and utilitarian.

I had hoped that this book would have a lot of color pictures of high end porcelain. It does. I checked it out of the library along with European Ceramics, Wedgewood, Royal Austrian Porcelain, Nymphenburger Porzellen, and English Pottery 1620-1840. Personally I ended up buying The Art of Ceramics-European Ceramic Design 1500-1830 because it covers English and European porcelain with detailed history and a lot of pictures. Many of the pieces in the book are also shown in the more expensive books. European Ceramics (less text) and The Art of Ceramics have a lot in common and you won't be disappointed with either. The other books are specific to their manufacturer or country. I was satisfied that other books I own display the same or similar items and that the rest were encompassed in this book. The description of 320 pages is incorrect. there are 256 pages.
If you are seeking a well written and illustrated introductory volume on European ceramics, this book would be ideal. It should also appeal to the more informed ceramics enthusiast given that Howard Coutts's text is detailed, easily readable and comprehensive. He covers the development of the main areas of European ceramics such as Italian maiolica, porcelain discovery in the west, French rococo, English ceramics and the classical revival. There are many excellent quality color reproductions of superior standard examples of various styles of ceramics. The general printing quality is additionally very good.

Charles and Emma: The Darwins' Leap of Faith by Deborah Heiligman is exceptional.As a fan of science writing, biography, historical settings, and young adult literature, I felt like Charles and Emma was written just for me. The religious issues along with the romantic aspects brought drama to what might have otherwise been a traditional biography. The religious and romantic elements might also move some fiction readers toward nonfiction. Many adult biographies can be academic and dry, so I enjoyed the simple language, conversational style, and topical emphasis of this book written for young adults. I don't normally think of biographies as "page turners," but the story was a really "quick read."Heiligman wove interesting primary source materials and stories into the book. I particularly enjoyed the "to marry" and "no to marry" list. I could relate to this very analytical approach. I could also connect to his obsession with "knowing everything" about a particular topic such as his species studies.Combining the stories of Charles and Emma made the book unique. As I read the story I wondered about the impact of spouses on other scientists. I'd like to see other books taking this approach to biography.So much of YA literature focuses on realistic fiction (teen angst and melodrama) and fantasy (vampires, werewolves, dystopia) that it's great to see a book written for nerdy teens like I was! In publisher's quest for "high profit" books, they often forget that there's a market for engaging biographies, readable nonfiction, and quality storytelling outside traditional fiction categories. This book will never get the readership of the Twilight series, but there are teens in the world that aspire to be naturalists, scientists, and scholars that are thirsty for books like this.One sign of an exceptional book is the degree to which I think about the book later. Darwin seems to be everywhere I look. Darwin's 200th birthday was Feb 12 2010.I've always respected Charles Darwin for the many years he spent researching and reflecting on his theories before publishing. Read Beatrix Potter: A Life in Nature or Rachel Carson: Witness for Nature.Okay, so now you know I'm a nerd. We need more nerds in the world!
I used this book to teach evolution to my 8th grade science students. You'd be surprised at how capable 8th graders can be of having respectful discussion on this topic! It allows students with or without religious convictions to address their concerns by talking about how Charles Darwin did so. They were also able to think about how to relate to people on both sides of the debate by exploring Charles's respect for his wife Emma (and her support of him despite her disagreements). Our socratic seminar on the themes in this book allowed us to start our unit on evolution with an open mind and with an understanding of (and respect for) different viewpoints.The author also has a theater version of the book on her website, which was perfect for differentiation for english language learners or reading disabilities.
This is based mainly on the Darwin family's correspondence so it's easy to believe it's accurate. I have read several books about Darwin, along with trying to slog through his actual book Origin of Species which is really tough going. The book adds detail to other facts about Darwin found in other books. It especially discusses the complication caused by Emma's belief in heaven and Darwin's struggle with that. Interesting fact: They had ten children, seven of whom survived, and Emma had her last child when she was 48 years old. However, they had an astonishing number of household employees, so Emma was not exactly doing laundry and cooking for the family. Great read!
Picked for a book club read, not realizing it was geared toward a younger audience. Several of us really enjoyed it, though we all found the writing style very simple (just right to include the younger audience.) You get to know Darwin as "Charles", a husband and father, a human being in the context of a family; and are charmed and touched by his relationship with them. And the story of how his discoveries effected his beliefs and thus his relationships with those he loved most, keeps you enthralled, especially for people who have experienced the effects of differences in belief in their personal relationships with those they love, who have the context of the full depth of their emotions to draw from when they are only hinted at in the book. It follows the story of his relationship with Emma and family life from it's start to the ends of their lives, and his scientific work in the context of his daily life with his family. Simple and understated, drawing the picture from the historical sources, some in our book club longed for more, and it certainly could have been made more exciting as historical fiction, where you could have gotten inside their heads a bit more, but I find a beauty in the story told as simply as it was. When differences in belief so often spark contention that tears people apart, I found this a beautiful story of triumph of love for our fellow beings, in a striking place: one of the first couples to have felt the impact of the theory of evolution.I came away with greater respect for Darwin most deeply because of this one thing: his care and respect for the feelings of those whose religious devotion was disturbed by his theories. When after his death, Emma edited out certain passages of his personal writings, which were not intended by him to go public, because she said she thought people would take them the wrong way, at first you may think she is trying to clean up what she doesn't agree with. But I get the feeling from what you learn about the two, that more likely she knew that Charles didn't like offending and hurting people, and was more likely to withhold a thought of his that might be taken as being disrespectful or in mean spirit to others who held contradictory cherished beliefs. Not that he didn't feel justified in his beliefs, but that he would take the utmost care that others would not perceive the slightest mean spirit or disrespect in his intent.One thing that struck me was how being part of a distinctly upper class, the life Darwin led that enabled him to devote his time to his studies, was surely starkly different than the lives and constraints of those in the working and poorer classes. While this was not a theme brought out at all in the book (appropriately, as this was not the scope of the book), I couldn't help become aware of it while reading the account of what his daily life and home was like.Seeing Darwin's studies in the context of his home life, and ordinary daily musings and observations of the things around him, can also be a great model for the young scientists among us.

I've been buying Sierra Club Wilderness calendars since at least 1980. Before I purchased the 2019 calendar, I looked at a few of the reviews and noticed that some of the negative ones talk about the paper getting thinner over the years. Since we save past calendars (that's how we used to keep track of daily events), I thought I'd take a rather unscientific look at the calendar thickness over the years. Calendars that we have dated 1990 and earlier are about 0.125" thick (14 pages). 1991 and later (still 14 pages) all seem to be around 0.095" thick, give or take a few thousandths of an inch. So people who say that the calendar pages have gotten thinner are correct, they also must have really good memories since the thickness changed some 27 years ago and has been pretty much the same since. As for me, I love these calendars and will continue to purchase them even though the individual pages are 0.0025" (about the thickness of a human hair) thinner than they were 27 years ago :-)
Beautiful calendar with rectangles large enough for us 70-somethings to see our medical appointments and our elderly dog's and cat's vet appointments.
I've been buying these Sierra Club Wilderness Calendars for many years and they are getting more and more flimsy all the time. Although the pictures and layout of this calendar are very nice, the quality of the paper used is very poor. Years ago, the pages were made from heavy card stock paper, much like only the cover is now. The pages never used to curl up like the cheap ones they're made with now do. I appreciate the nice photography, but these cheap, curling pages are a real disappointment.
Beautiful photographs and plenty of room to write (yes, we still do that). The paper was not as strong as I assumed it would be so the hole tore as soon as I put it up. It is very long. Be sure to measure the space before you buy it.UPDATE: The calendar is useless! What a waste of money! It can't be hung up like the last 60 years of calendars because the paper rips and no amount of tape - of any kind - will reinforce the hole for more than a minute. I bought this because I thought the paper would be substantial enough to hold the weight. Now I cannot use it.
I waited until the end of December to order my 2018 calendar and I apparently got one that couldn't be sold under other circumstances. The upper right corner is bent and ugly. It's not bad enough for me to return but I'm disappointed.
Great quality and awesome pictures however April and May have the same sand dune pictures and a lot of the descriptions underneath the other months are incorrect for what is shown. Obviously a printing error but should have been checked before mass produced and mailed out.
Perfect calendar for size of days for writing in things, for paper quality accepting pen without skips, for beautiful scenery, for sturdy nail hole for the year, for full calendar printed on one page for reference. I buy one every year.
I gave this beautiful calendar as a birthday gift to a family member who has everything. She loved it and stopped her party to look through every page. She will be traveling to some of the sights displayed next month.
