Great story fro Nadia Hashim. This is the fifth book of hers that I have read. It is different in that the whole story takes place in America yet it includes the Afghan background of the main characters mother. It is another winner in my opinion.

Nadia Hashimi is a wonderful writer. I have read all her books and found them all difficult to put down. I can't wait for the next one!

If books should be mirrors, then Hashimi's The Sky at Our Feet is a floor-to-ceiling one.Informative but not preachy, this is a tale that covers a lot of ground (pardon the pun). Adventure, politics, health and science, and the sheer love of NYC all shine through. This is a book for both guys and gals: it's fast-paced enough to keep them turning the pages, has both a boy AND a girl as main characters, and teaches without being preachy. So much to love about this book. It's so timely in it's themes of what it takes to be an American, a friend, a rule breaker and belong to a loving family.

I have enjoyed all of this author's previous books and was eagerly anticipating this latest one. This was an easy read but disappointing compared to the others. I found the storyline lacking in substance. It was silly and unbelievable. It seemed as though it was written for a younger audience. I hope the next one is better!

Jason D, named after the last half of the year, is an American citizen. His mother is an Afghan refugee who is living in the US without papers and is under threat of deportation. When Jason D sees her being escorted into a police car, he assumes that she is on her way back to Afghanistan, and he decides to go from their home in New Jersey into Manhattan to find the only other adult he trusts, a friend of his mother's. He has a partial address for her and a few dollars, and with that, he sets out. Along the way he is injured and admitted to a hospital, where he meets Max, a girl who wants to escape her situation as much as he wants to leave his. Together, they navigate the streets of New York, evading the police and hospital staff. A powerful story that asks kids to think about what it means to be "illegal" and what it means to feel like you belong.

The people who are best at doing things are not always equally adept at explaining what they do and how they do it. That is why I am so pleased that we have Arthur Rynearson’s Legislative Drafting Step-by-Step to explain, carefully and lucidly, how bills and other legislative documents are drafted for consideration by Congress in Washington.This book should be required reading for every Representative and Senator, every congressional staffer involved in the legislative process, every lobbyist, and every lawyer and law student who is interested in public policy and how it is made.For many years, Mr.Rynearson was a senior attorney and legislative drafter in the Senate’s Office of Legislative Counsel. With its counterpart in the House of Representatives, these offices provide expert, non-partisan, and confidential services to all the members and committees of both houses: drafting bills, resolutions, amendments, and conference reports, on request, to transform legislators’ policy proposals and decisions into technically correct, complete, and effective legislative language. Senators and Representatives are not required to use the services of Mr. Rynearson and his colleagues, but they are foolish when they do not.As the book’s title implies, Mr. Rynearson takes his readers through all the elements of legislative drafting. For example, should a proposal be drafted as a bill as opposed to a joint resolution or even a concurrent resolution? This choice makes a very important difference. What sections do bills usually include, and in what order do they appear? What terms need to be defined in a bill? Should duties and authorities be assigned to the President, or to a particular Cabinet secretary, or to a subordinate official within a department? Because most bills today amend one or more existing laws, or have effects on them, how should a new bill best be incorporated into the corpus of federal law? How are judges likely to interpret laws and how can a bill be written to minimize the risk of judicial misinterpretation? These are only some of the questions that Mr. Rynearson raises and answers. His topics range from the most conceptual to the most detailed. How does effective legislative drafting contribute to implementing democratic values and promoting the rule of law? When is it appropriate to use “which” instead of “that”, and why?This book will not make you a competent legislative drafter. As the author notes in his foreword, “I served in the Senate Legislative Counsel’s Office and learned my skill at drafting from other more senior attorneys, who in turn had learned from their predecessors.” To my mind, these attorney-drafters are craftspeople of the highest order: men and women, most of whom devote their careers to mastering their craft when, incidentally, they undoubtedly could be earning several times their government salaries in the private sector.Any of us may think from time to time that it would be simple to write a bill that will resolve some problem that particularly bothers us. A reading of this book should demonstrate why that is rarely, if ever, true. There are almost certain to be considerations and complications that need to be addressed and that would not even occur to us. H. L. Mencken is reputed to have said something to the effect that for every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong. So this is not a book that teaches you how to do it yourself; it is a book that should teach you why not to do it yourself.Washington, DC is full of lawyers, too many of whom evidently say to themselves that “I went to law school, so I can draft a law. No problem!” Not so. Representatives and Senators, or at least newly-elected ones, may believe they can do their own drafting, or they may believe that the legislative staff working for them surely should be able to do it, or they may believe that it would be wiser to ask for the help of those friendly lobbyists who are so anxious to help and who seem to know so much. Following any of these courses is all too likely to lead to a defective bill which, for that reason alone, is unlikely to receive the support its congressional sponsor hopes and expects it will receive. Instead, the course of wisdom is to take a proposal for new legislation to the expert attorneys in the House or Senate Office of Legislative Counsel and be prepared to answer their questions as they try to discern exactly what your intentions really are and exactly how you propose to change existing law on the same subject.Mr. Rynearson’s book, as you might expect, is lucid and carefully organized. It does demand the reader’s attention, but it is not at all intimidating. And a careful reader will come to appreciate Mr. Rynearson’s enthusiasm for and pride in his chosen profession. At the end of the book, he asks rhetorically if legislative drafting is mind-numbing. No, replies: “Legislative drafting is a constant challenge to capture someone else’s intent precisely. There always seems to be a clearer way to express a matter that is eluding the drafter. Choosing the correct words to capture policy and to achieve economy of language is both intellectually challenging and highly absorbing.”Readers will come to appreciate why this is so. What they also will come to appreciate is that there are so many serious and dedicated people like Mr. Rynearson who devote their professional lives to enabling our government to do what we want it to do.

As a professional legislative drafter, I highly recommend Legislative Drafting Step-by-Step. It’s a very thorough and well-organized examination of legislative drafting. I highly recommend this translation of Dante's Inferno. For many years, Ciardi's translation has been the standard and it has much to recommend it. But Ciardi's rhymed stanzas are looser, wordier, and less faithful to the original than Thornton's blank verse. Thornton brings us closer to what Dante wrote. And the excellent notes at the end of each canto help bring this masterpiece to life for a modern reader.

With decades of study and meticulous craftsmanship, Dr. Peter Thornton has offered his translation of “The Inferno.” I do not know Italian, but I have read a couple of other translations of “The Inferno,” and I found this one the best for several reasons. First, the poetry is vivid. I felt like orange flames and the stench of Sulphur were my companions as much as were Dante and Virgil.The verse itself is a second reason I liked this translation. The meter – iambic pentameter, the ordinary meter of the English language – does not intrude into the poetry itself. That is, I wasn’t conscious of stretching of words or awkward diction for the sake of the meter.You can enjoy the translation without bothering to read the footnotes, but once you start, you are off on another journey, equally absorbing – this one through contemporary (to Dante) Florentine history, Christian metaphors and allusions, Roman legend and mythology, and Catholic scholars from Augustine on.Read the translation; savor the footnotes. There’s always room for a fresh version of hell.

THANK YOU !! I've been trying to expose my kids to more of the classics. But every translation of the Divine Comedy I've come across has been so difficult that I couldn't even get through Hell (felt like hell trying to read it). UNTIL NOW !!! Thank you Mr. Douglas Neff for this translation. It keeps all the flavor, tension, and character; and stays true to the original story. Reading this translation, I find myself more absorbed and engaged in trying to understand what Dante was trying to get across, and why he picked certain persons for certain levels, and doing research into some of the people, places, vices, etc. that he talks about, instead of spending hours trying to decipher the actual language of the translation. My 7 year old is totally engaged, while at the same time, my 15 year old and I are getting into some very interesting discussions (Dante put Pope Celestine V with those souls who neither heaven nor hell want, because he resigned as Pope . . . I wonder what that means for old former pope Benedict XVI / cardinal Ratzinger who just did the same thing). And none of us are getting ground down by having to stop and try and translate the language.I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get this book. You will not be disappointed. I'm now trying to find a comparable translation of Purgatory and Paradise so we can complete the story.

Dante's THE INFERNO is a classic. Written around 1321, the book predates most of the classics, except Homer's works of course. But even before Shakespeare, this book heralded in an uncommonly twisted and almost perverse story of Dante's descent into Hell and his description of everything he sees and those he meets. It's eloquently written. Not necessarily an easy read but it does tribute to the language and reminds the reader that our vernacular has so much more color than the reductio ad absurdum we see being used today. Dante's descriptions of the nightmare that sinners endure at each level is pretty graphic, sometimes bordering on horrifying, and who knows, he might even be credited with the first narrative on the subject of flesh-eating zombies which are so popular today. The narrative also gives the reader a feel for certain historical relevancies of that and earlier times and how Dante saw the world. This particular version of the book, by John Ciardi, provides excellent descriptive notes after each section, clarifying things mentioned in the story so the reader stays on track. Lastly, I could not help but wonder if the Vatican of that time didn't encourage the book to be written simply because of its thematic message of what happens to sinners, particularly those who sin against God and the Church or become apostates. It certainly provides compelling imagery to anyone who believes in Heaven and Hell. Add it to your reading arsenal - it's worth the read.

Itf you're new to and Arizona garden and plan to garden, you need this book. I'm a Master Gardener in Oregon but Arizona is completely different. This book will let you know what to plant and when to plant it. You can't assume that just because a certain plant is available in the big box store that it's the right time to plant it here. . .or for that matter if it'll even grow in Arizona.

Not real fond of the way the book is layer out; that is, by plant category. I have plants in many categories, so I have to flip back and forth between sections every month. Also, was disappointed that none of the plants in the photos are identified. Would have liked to see pictures of the plants in their sections.

This is not really what I was looking for. I guess I should have paid more attention to the month-by-month at the top. The monthly to-dos and topics are kind of simplistic. Not really as definitive as I would have liked.

first off the company i ordered this from sent me this edition instead of the one i requested, and the quality was not at all what they described... BUT this book is really good. it is incredibly detailed and amazingly complete- so much info. its really a great resource for growing anything in the az desert. the only thing that kinda bugged me was each catagory was seperated ex: shrubs, vegetables, roses, and then broken down into months. I would have liked just 12 months with it broken down within the month. very glad i have it though.

For those of us who have turned our backyards into elegant edible landscaping, this book is a must-have. Written specifically for desert climates, it tells you what to plant (and when), when and how to fertilize your produce, tips on growing great fruits and veggies, and much more. I constantly refer to this book for much needed information.

This book is a little basic. It's okay for a new gardener like me, but an experienced gardener would not need it. I would have loved some lists of flowers and shrubs for each month but they are all in paragraphs.

Excellent guide to planting for the southwest region. We have extensive landscape and want to plant a sustainable edible garden this year. This book is very helpful and has information month by month for all aspects of planting. Highly recommended. The author lives in Arizona and is a master gardener.

Very repetitive. Limited information. I found the authors other book AZ Gardeners Guide more informative. I would not have bought it if I had glanced through it first.

I've already done a lot of online reading, built the van, and look forward to increasing my travel time. I wanted to try book format, to see if there may be either new information, or, perhaps I would find a concise reference book with continuing value. From the subtitle, at least, I had expected more of a lifestyle book. It's really a primer on what one must consider, with regard to equipping a van for living or camping: What options you have for a basic vehicle, then, bed, electricity, water, heat, cooling, toilet, cooking, etc. There is not a lot of how-to, and, what there is, is very basic.The book is well-written, and, I did not see any major errors. All topics covered DO need to be considered, by prospective van people.I would take issue with the estimated expense ($100-200) of adding an auxiliary (house) battery that will charge with the vehicle's alternator. A decent deep cycle or marine AGM battery will use up most of the estimated cash, and you still have to add charge controller and/or relay, cables, main fuse, distribution fusebox, wiring, and some 12v sockets, at minimum. I would double the given estimate.The yellow, kayak-laden pop-top van on the book's cover seems too flashy for the topic. I think a more modest and typical van would be better suited.

I travel for a living so I spend a lot of time in my car and rental cars. Frequently I must sleep in my car. I foresee a near future where I will be traveling further away from home and therefore even more time in my car. I started adding up my motel bills and realized that some months I am spending more than I do on my mortgage and utilities. I have started looking at my options; teardrop trailer, converted van, camper van, small motor-home etc.. I had some questions so I have bought 3 books. This was the second book I read. This book answered most of the questions I had and definitely gave me some other subjects to consider too. The added bonus is the download-able PDF references on different vans and DIY solar system (I also foresee this as a must have). I have a feeling I'll be re-reading this book as my research expands. This book is well worth the small price I paid and I would recommend it to anyone who maybe spending a lot of time in their vehicle.

Chris has compiled a lot of information in a very organized and well-illustrated format. I think this would be a helpful guide to newbees. I have been living this life for seven years, with almost the same van as Chris has, but my build was much less extravant and I did not have the resources she had. I know many of the people she mentions in the book, and am familiar with many of the products and links she uses. I can't say she is offering any NEW information that isn't already out there, but she does a good job of laying it out in an organized manner. I would recommend it to others.I also want to point out she made mistakes in her own build, but she realized what they were as she went along and points them out clearly. I admire her for doing that. There is not just ONE way of doing things.

Chris On's Defying Normal is the first information on van dwelling I read, so I am familiar with her style of writing, personal but engaging. I felt the beginning had more personal information than was useful. However, the rest of the book blew me away. She covers topics of living in a van that I had not even considered, like laundry, furniture, mail, showering. Every topic is very thoroughly covered. The breadth of information provided was inspiring. Who knew there were so many options for cooking? Her anecdotes about how she does it are very helpful, too. Not everyone will do things the same, but it was useful for perspective. Seeing how she does it, helps me imagine what I might do. Besides the detail she provides on a given topic and the options available, her Final Thoughts and Pros & Cons segments really help one to evaluate what path might be best for your own situation. The subtitle is "how to live in a van" not how to build a conversion, so for anyone wondering about the lifestyle, Chris's book provides a lot of food for thought. This is a very good book for anyone considering van dwelling and perhaps for someone recently in, to see what else can be done.

The author outlines both the good and bad aspects of van dwelling. She explains, in detail, how to turn your van into a custom home on wheels. Beginning with how to choose a van, she takes the reader through insulation, furniture, beds, high tops, solar, and all other considerations, including how to handle toilet needs.I think what impressed me the most was the author’s honesty in explaining how readers can avoid the mistakes she made when converting her own van. The book is well worth the cost.

Packed full of great information, organized and well written. Chris's conversational writing style makes the book fun and easy to read, and she covers everything! Pros, cons, work arounds, mistakes she made that the reader can avoid, and suggestions for every budget. If you're even considering van dwelling, save yourself a lot of headaches and read this book first! Chris has got you covered.

Very good start if you are interested in becoming a van dweller. Gives overviews of topics one should be concerned about such as cooking, showers, toilets, staying warm, cooling off, energy, etc., and provides options for them and rough costs. She provides companies and brands to consider for those options. Good resource. I'd recommend this.

The info is solid and well written. You must remember it comes from someone who could afford to put a lot of extra expense into her van. That said, she does detail cheaper options for those of us with little money. I didn't learn much new info but I've been vandwelling for many years. This is a good primer for newbies.
