I must admit that it has been a long time since I have read the anthropological studies that Humphrey & Laidlaw contrast their approach with; but taking their claims at face value, I find their contention--that "to take a ritual stance" (both in religious ritual, or any other ritualized activity) entails a different form of acting and intending than any other human doing--to be quite thought-provoking (and well-argued). Their approach is at root as (if not more) phenomenological than "anthropological". [NB they do not use the term "archetypal" in a Jungian sense. I bought the book thinking that they were...but I was not unpleasantly surprised to find them going off in another direction!]
