This is a very different perspective on TVZ, written by his faithful road manager of many years, Harold Eggers, whom Townes always called H. By all accounts, H looked after Townes and helped him to stay out of his own way, basically. I felt that it was well-written, interesting, and honest. Lots of great pictures, always a terrific bonus. H has a rather unique perspective in that he wasn’t SUPER close, like a best friend, nor was he a completely disconnected rock historian doing a book on Texas songwriters-he really knew the guy, went on the road with him, looked after him-but he had enough distance to give a perspective that is objective. If you love Townes and his songwriting, you really need to read this book. The hardcover edition does true justice to the great photographs. The demons and spirits, the ghosts and, all in all, his spiritual side, really gives us a wider understanding of what that ethereal quality in his writing truly was. The break-down of Townes’ philosophies really makes us feel we knew him too. What a fascinating read and a generous book about a quicksilver soul who left us too soon. Nice job, H!

I just started the book and I think it is going to be a great read. However, page XV already came completely out of the binding and I'm only on page XXV. I'm not sure who is responsible for the book binding, the publisher is Backbeat Books, but unfortunately this is not the first book that I've purchased from Amazon that has had this problem. The binding problems I've had in the past have been with William Gibson's books. I'm a huge fan of William Gibson and Townes Van Zandt, however, I'm not a fan of inferior work product - in this case the physical book itself. I'm very dissappointed to have this problem happen with my latest purchase. I read most of my books in digital format but I still like to read physical books especially if I will be reading the book in my backyard or outdoors at cafes. I didn't submit a lower rating because I am only unhappy with the book binding not the content of the book. So far I think the book is awesome and I'm not even to page 1 yet.

Stunning. Couldn't put it down. I didn't feel like a reader. I didn't feel like an observer. Harold Eggers and L.E. McCullough invited me along on the trip. I'm there, on the road with Townes and Harold, in the truck, in the motel rooms, in the bars, in the theaters... listening to Townes sing his heartache and humor, seeing Harold standing, supportive, in the wings. Then, the three of us are off, ready to venture together to the next scene, the next exploit, the next escapade. Join us. It's a journey you won't soon forget.

I knew Townes and Harold. This book is an chance to see through the eyes of someone who knew and loved Townes, Harold Eggers. As we hear the story of Townes, we also share the road with Harold, his partner in music and life. I use the book in my freshman writing class at Schreiner University, and I also use it when I give presentations on Texas music. I have a book that contains an interview with Townes, and this book by Harold enriches our understanding of Townes as well. No one can tell the story like Harold, and L.E. Mccullough has put beautiful words to these stories.

I have read three other books about Townes, but feel this one truly gives insight into his life. Highly recommend for any Townes fan.

You'll know the music of Townes Van Zandt from his recorded legacy, and you'll know the outlines of his life story from the biography A Deeper Blue: The Life and Music of Townes Van Zandt, but this book will acquaint you with the man himself, unfiltered. The author was Townes' road manager and close friend and confidant. He traveled countless miles on the road with the troubled troubadour, gig after gig, from angelic heights to demonic depths, and the two road warriors bonded as brothers. Mr. Eggers has not merely dished up a plate of warmed-over gossip or half-baked remembrances: on the contrary, along with Mr. McCullough he has crafted a thoughtful, reflective memoir, full of soulful nourishment and hard truth.A biography by necessity covers the groundwork of a life, examines the details, and hopefully explores some of the deeper strains. This memoir drills right down into those deepest strata, close to the core, not flinching, with respect and integrity, and succeeds in revealing this enigmatic artist with the bright light of honesty, and with more than a little love. This is a beautiful book, highly recommended not just to fans of Townes Van Zandt, but to anyone interested in the truth of the artistic life.

Harold Eggers worked with Townes Van Zandt for 20 years, from 1977 until Townes death on January 1, 1997. Harold was involved with all aspects of Townes career and life during that time - being his road manager, agent, manager, business partner and friend. This is a most extraordinary book, giving an most insightful look into Townes' mind, his thinking and why he wrote the songs he did - some of the best songs ever written. The book flows very well, is an enjoyable and very satisfying read . You won't be disappointed.

This is a touching account of the years spent by Harold F Eggers "on the road" with Townes Van Zandt. It is an up close and personal insight to the troubled soul that was Townes and no one but "H" could reveal so much. The fight with their personal demons bonded them together and neither judged the other. It was real friendship. It's also a book about what "could have been" if Townes wasn't so fragile and insecure. We should be grateful to "H" for being so honest and true in telling it as it was. It's the much need real story of Pancho and Lefty.
