A two star book means I liked the sample well enough to try it, but just couldn't bring myself to finish it. The characters are in two camps: the good guys and the bad guys -- little nuance in figuring out who is on what side. Maybe if I finished it I would have been surprised, but I thought I could see where it was going about 100 pages in and wasn't ready to plod through the angst-laden text to get to there.
Throughout the tortuous 18 years of sadistic abuse to rival that of Marquis de Sade, Kathryn existed in a world of terror and admonishment, constantly controlled and bullied by her communally worshipped, upstanding captor, her husband.I personally was grateful that most of the disturbing details of her physical abuse were spared the reader, however, the all too familiar descriptions of her continual emotional abuse had me in tears.I highly recommend this book to sufferers of abuse and those who have no idea what abuse may look like in reality. Who knows what could have happened if only one person had thrown her a lifeline.
I started reading this book knowing it was going to be about domestic violence but had no idea just how harrowing a read it was going to be. The first quarter of the book is a little slow but necessary to understand Kate's life later in the book , when she reflects her previous life with her husband Mark.At times I struggled to continue reading some of the detailed chapters as the story is explicit and fearful. Yet other times I couldn't put the book down because I was desperate to know the outcome. The cliche 'You never know what goes on behind closed doors' is a true description of this book.A very promising new author. I will definitely read more of her work!
This story was only ok to me, but only because I was so annoyed by the main character. That kind of behavior does not spell strength to me. Even her kids were not so nice to her sometimes, even so she did it all for thwm, apparently the kids would have been better off with a divorced but normal and happy mom. The rest of the story was just too simple for me, no real excitement.
I really enjoyed this book. It is a story of resilience and staying strong through adversity. In parts it reminded me of the movie "Sleeping With The Enemy". This is the second book I have read by Amanda Prowse and I am always amazed at the energy & feelings of the characters she creates that feel so real and tangible.She is not afraid to tackle real problems that many people face. I look forward to reading more of her books.
If I could give this book three and a half stars I would because it's better than just three. I can't say I loved it though because it was sad and, it also made me angry. I feel that if I were in her shoes I would have handled things quite differently, and although I felt truly sorry for her she did have other options but, we're all made of different stuff, you decide for yourself.
Although you knew from the beginning what had happened, this book took you through the life of what a wife went through for years. I found it interesting and yet horrifying. The characters came to life, a very well written book.
This is the story about Kate, and what she went through for eighteen years of her life, we also follows the next ten years before she finally feels freeIn the first chapters of this book I wondered more than once what her husband had done to her, and if it really was as bad as I feared, but it was worse! And when her whole story about the abuse was revealed, I was shocked.How could she let it go on for all these years? Well, she did, to protect the children,because she felt that was the only right thing to do
