A large gold find worth billions has been discovered in the jungles of Papua New Guinea. The geologist who made the discovery has gone missing, but that is not why Case Lee, former Delta force operation and current contract private investigator is there. He was hired by his company, Global Resolutions, to find out who all is there and getting in on the action. The Russians, Chinese, British, and Indonesians are the players, as are the people who hired Case, who he does not know their identity. Case hires a local tribal member, Luke, to guide him through the jungle. Luke seems to be the tribal equivalent of a special ops agent. They finish their mission and Case discovers he has been played, and discovers who really hired him, and he is pissed. He wants no more to do with the situation and he heads back to the States. It's time for him to visit his former black ops brothers and see how they are faring. We find Catch and Bo in the Pacific Northeast. Catch has found the love of his life and appears to be settling down. Bo is partaking of the advantages of the legalization of a certain plant. He is getting back to nature and in touch with his inner organic self.Case then travels to Montana to visit Marcus who has settled into the life of a rancher. He finds a situation there, and Marcus wants him to stay out of it. When his sometimes girlfriend, Irene, gets involved, Case feels he needs to take care of it. If it were always so simple.Case goes back to the east coast to visit his mother and his developmentally disabled sister. Case's love for his mother and sister is pure and he would do anything to protect them. Case and his buddies have a contract on their heads, leftover from their special ops days. A million dollars apiece makes them especially wanted. Case would really like to know who has the contract on them, and until he finds out who it is, he cannot settle down to a normal life.Case gets in touch again with Jules, who is an independent intelligence operative who seems to have all information about any espionage throughout the world. Case seems to trust her, but the reader is left to think maybe she would double cross him for the right price.Case gets a chance to find out who has the contract on his head and he goes on another mission. The twist and turns of this story will keep the pages turning and the heart thumping. I really felt the need to visit Bo's favorite pharmacy, Tranquil Waters Dispensary, after finishing this book.I received a free, advance copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review

I just finished the New Guinea Job and found it even more exciting than the first installment ( The Suriname Job ) which I bought by a happy accident. Case Lee is former Delta Force who now takes on jobs, some by design and others by happenstance as events unfold. Often the job requires assistance from Lee's band of brothers, Marcus, Bo and Catch all former commandos who teamed together during their military days. These dudes are all badass to the extreme no matter how much opposition firepower they face. Lovers of action adventure novels want these scenarios. At the other end of the spectrum in quieter times we find Lee and his buds to be introspective, humorous and often vulnerable in dealings with each other and the secondary characters within the books. I particularly enjoy the moments Case has with his sister CC.The somewhat minimalist writing style employed by Vince Milam is well done. Sort of reminds my of Robert Parker in the Jesse Stone books. I have longed for a few years now to a successor to Jack Reacher as he has been toned down too much for lots of his fans. Case Lee for me joins Scot Harvath, Joe Dillard and a few others as the peak performers in take no prisoners and no crap heroes we love to lose ourselves into.

Vince Milam did it again. New Guinea? Where is that anyway? Case Lee travels there to look for gold. OK, not really, but to have a look-see of four possible gold mines in the jungles of New Guinea. So we have the CIA, Russians, Chinese, British, natives with spears, a trusty off-the-wall boat captain toting Lee around the rivers in the jungle, a native sidekick, and Lee's fellow Delta Force comrades. For what more could you ask?One of the best parts of this book is the in-depth history and brotherly love of amongst lee and his former teammates. This is rarely if ever brought to the reader in any book. It just adds something to the story that is hard to explain.

Vince Milam is, unfortunately, a rare commodity in this genre. His stories are taut, interesting, exciting, and, maybe most importantly, BELIEVABLE. I can suspend disbelief, up to a point, in order to enjoy a good action thriller. All too often good stories go beyond that point and fall into farce. That is when I decide that I will not purchase the writer's next installment. The other thing that makes Mr. Milam somewhat rare is that he is an excellent, excellent writer, in addition to being a great storyteller. I can actually stop and think about and appreciate his craft while enjoying the story. But his craft does not, usually, take away from the story. Some good writers do fall in love with their technique and get in the way of their tale. It may just be a personal quirk of mine, but I do occasionally feel him skirting the edge of writing for his own gratification (which I would probably do, too, if I had his talent) when Case Lee gets pretty deeply into introspection. One last thing...this is a real novel. Some writers I could mention in this genre would have broken this up into two or maybe three releases and called each segment a "novel". I certainly feel I got my money's worth from The New Guinea Job.

I gave 5 stars to the first book, and this one is as good or better.I liked the main character, Case Lee, even better than in the first book. His first person narration is more natural and polished. He also spends less time brooding about the moral issues of his past and is in the present more of the time. His social life is interesting. The bonds and loyalty of the four remaining members of his special forces team are beyond superglue. There is humor throughout the book as the team interacts. The plot has unexpected twists, turns, and hidden motives that kept me turning the pages. The action sequences are fast, chaotic, and explosive. Our heroes do get wounded but I'm sure they will be back for the next book. The writing and editing is, again, excellent. We'll done.
