This cookbook is AMAZING!!! There are photos of the "grandmothers" with the raw ingredients and photos of the finished product. It's so nice to have a little bit of info about each of the women whose recipes are featured in the book; it gives you a sense of connection.The recipes were easy to follow and alternatives were offered for ingredients that may not be readily available to everyone. I read through the entire book as soon as I received it and am really looking forward to making some new and delicious recipes!!!The only thing I would suggest is to include recipes from different countries in any subsequent books.

I purchased this book as a gift for my mom. Its a very sweet, unique book. I looked through the whole book before I gave it to her. It was so neat to see how people eat all around the world. The ingredients they use. Also, very neat to look at all the pictures in the book of all the different kitchens women cook in around the world.

I love this book that shows the grandmas in their homes with the ingredients (one with an iguana and another one with caterpillars!) , along with the backstory and finished dishes. These women show pride in their food and family and that is the theme throughout this wonderful book.

This is a wonderful nook about what grandmas all over the world cook. I got it for my mom for Christmas and she loved it. Great pictures of each of the grandmas and their signature dishes!

I enjoyed the celebration of grandmothers from varied countries and cultures. There were very few recipes I would cook. Most were a beef/starch combo. A few contained ingredients such as shark or catapillars.

Our family has lived all over the world and many of these foods are "going home" for us. Beautiful illustrations and done with such love!! You can see the joy that making a traditional meal to feed loved ones brings to each of these women. No matter where in the world or what the meal is, the Love is universal.

Our family loves this book. my wife cooks meals from here and before we eat we read the story about the food we are eating. Great way for kids to diversify their palates and learn about other cultures.

This is a beautiful book for your kitchen or coffee table. It has great stories from loving grandmothers across the world that show their love through cooking. I have not made any of the recipes in this book, but I love to sit and look at the beautiful women and their stories.

Love Mr. Filicia's book American Beauty. Can't pinpoint why his design wows me, but it does. It's not pretentious but it's rich. I think an average income person can achieve a facsimile of this look by copying the forms and furniture placement. I read this book from cover to cover, the text is also interesting.

Renovations of an old home on a gorgeous lake near Syracuse is very interesting. If you've ever visited the area, you would enjoy excellent local restaurants and bakeries while viewing mansions, cottages, Criss-Craft vintage boats, "Old Money", and pretty gardens. The winters are fierce, but the rest of the year you'd enjoy the mature trees, the beautiful lake, and appreciation of days gone by. You can totally understand why restoring his home is a real labor of love. You may even "enjoy" the winter there.

I highly recommend this book. I've been a fan of Thom's since the Queer Eye days but honestly wasn't expecting to learn as much as I did from this book. It made me see things from a designer's point of view that I had never considered before. For example, how to have a subtle theme to your home, as he does with a nautical theme. It comes from subtle things like the direction the wood paneling runs (to emulate a boat) and the stair railing being similar to a ship's railing, rather than 1,000 fish things slapped up all over the house like a tacky seaside motel. He makes a statement without shouting it. There are tons of pictures that really demonstrate how he pulled each room together and how to have some rooms tie into others while still maintaining their own identity. Truly a great read and something I will use as I redo my own living space.

Thom Felicia is so talented and creative. I have this book in my library and find myself using it as a guide for design tips and ideas. Excellent book!

We went to a special fund-raising dinner for our library. The architect and the builder of the American Beauty were speaking. They were friends & acquaintances of many in attendance and who knew them...had worked with & for them and in general knew the "territory". We were happy to have read the book 1st. They of course autographed it. All in all good for us.

Thom Filicia's design sense is AMAZING. What he did to this house is both inspiring and comforting. Being a designer myself, I know this renovation was pricey, but he makes the spaces feel so homey while being very highly crafted. I usually buy a design book for the images only but the content of his story is very fun to read. I have gotten 3/4 of the way through it and am purposely not finishing it because I don't want to be done. It keeps calling me though so i might have to dive in again this weekend.

Whilst I do a little painting, I have always steered clear of landscapes- everything looks so flat. With this book I think I will venture into the realms of the outside. Why? Because this book explains it in steps - not a now do this and copy this - but it actually give you the tools to look at a landscape and plan it, It explains about depth, condensing a landscape onto a canvas, colour and brushstrokes. I don't know if I will achieve a masterpiece but at least I am itching to try - I have a whole box of photos, which I took because I could see painting potential, now I can have a go. This book was supplied via NetGalley in return for a honest and unbiased review.

This book begins slowly, seemingly buried under a thick layer of verbiage and beautiful thoughts, without much practical application. Like music, you just can't read about art technique for long without dozing off. I almost gave up, thinking she might make a better writer than painter. But the quality of the art led me on, and by the middle of the book, the author stopped talking and started showing, and the book suddenly came alive...her observations and suggestions were first class, even for me--a long-term landscapist. I think next time she should just drop the first fifty pages and begin "in medias res" as the Greeks used to say, or maybe the Zoroastrians, I forget.

I would put this together with Mitchell Albala's book in terms of helpfulness and beautiful images (and in fact Albala has a couple of paintings in this one, and I love his work, but I especially enjoyed the works here by Renato Muccillo). Although I paint in acrylics, not oils, I've been struggling with techniques I relied on in watercolor that don't work as well in acrylic. Most acrylic painting books seem to focus on gimmicks like gold leaf or carving shapes in gesso, and that is not what I want to do. I've looked at some other books on oil painting but they often relied on wet-in-wet and/or painterly techniques, which is not something I want to do with acrylics. I could see right away that this book gives many examples of the painter working over a dry layer, which is what I do, so these are techniques I can use. I have seen many examples of so-called Old Master type painting that involves toning the support, but I had not seen any colors used for that besides grays and earths. This is the first time I saw someone toning with cadmium orange. Right away I wanted to try that. I also appreciated the description of a flake white hue made from 1 parts titanium and 2 parts zinc. I have just begun working with white (since it's a no-no in watercolor, I never used it until the past year or so), and this formulation I will definitely try. The step-by-step paintings of clouds are especially helpful. Lots of good stuff here!

Best book on landscape painting. This is an excellent book and anyone ho aspires to be a landscape painter should own it.There are chapters on every main landscape feature - Trees, Water, Sky, Terrain etc, In each chapter there is a thorough discussion of how the paintings illustrated were constructed, a section on appropriate brush strokes and some demonstrations which the reader can choose to paint himself.The print is a somewhat too light for my eyes, so I bought the Kindle edition and use both of them.Fortunately this book does not go through the paints you should use, or which brushes and palette you should use. It assumes that you know that and are advanced enough not to have that stuff repeated. This is definitely a book for more advanced paintersEvery painter should have this in his library.

Many artists limit their selection of paintings in their books to their own works. This book, in contrast, includes the artist's own works (particularly when she is showing, step by step, how she goes about painting), but also works from many other magnificent landscape artists. (In fact, this book first came to my attention because the cover features a work by Renato Muccillo). The paintings are very well selected to illustrate particular points she's making. I love that the instruction in this book encompasses both the big picture and the nitty gritty (such as brush techniques). While many art books are geared to beginners, this is an excellent art book that I believe has a lot to offer even for advanced painters. I consider myself intermediate, and it's perfect for me.

I imagine most people purchasing this book are painters interested in improving their art, which clearly was the author's target readership. But this is also a fantastic book for non-painters like me, because it helps reveal some of the mystery that goes into creating a painting. It's also a fine reminder that painting, like any other art, is not just a matter of inspiration and creativity. A great deal of hard work and technical skill, honed through years of practice, goes into any decent painting. The more one knows about that, whether they themselves paint or not, the more he or she can appreciate paintings and the people who create them.

A beautiful dust cover on this hard backed book. This book is an engaging and successful how-to book on painting landscapes in oil. Extensive coverage in a step wise approach. As a neophyte in this medium and having previously worked in watercolors, I found the information very concise and "do-able". I am inspired to get started in this course. The example paintings are from a variety of artists and are beautiful and expert paintings. Very pleased with this purchase it will have a treasured place in my repertoire and library of art instruction books.

While this is a beautifully worded book with LOTS of flowing prose, I found it a bit lacking on the technical side. It has some great nuggets of information and a nice variety of lovely artwork, but I was hoping for more guidance on advanced painting techniques and how to achieve them.

This is one of the most beautiful books on oil painting landscapes I have yet to read. Each chapter handles a different element of the landscape painting and there is a wonderful chapter on materials as well.

I am absolutely amazed as I flip through this book. The book itself is a very good quality. With that said, the contents are amazing! She covers everything from skin tone to soap bubbles! 3d objects, tears, snow, backgrounds, animal fur.... and on, and on, and on. I have no doubt, I will spend HOURS working with this book. I absolutely love it!

I was blown away by the amount of instructional content in this book. Helen is not only a coloring book illustrator, she was first an artist. She has applied many of her art techniques in coloring book form. This colorful guide shows us, step by step, how to achieve special effects on our pages. She even uses mediums that I would have never thought of on coloring book images. Water droplets on leaves, gems, balloons, wood grain, sparkly fairy dust, chrome, gold, silver, so many more than I can name.She's given us practice pages to try out the techniques. I would recommend copying and printing the practice pages so you can keep practicing.Also on her website she is giving us even more material to go along with the book. I just can't say enough about this colorist's guide. I'll do a video walk through later this week and upload it here.Don't miss this one!

Overall, I'm glad I bought the book. I would have loved to have had the book when I first started coloring. There are still dozens of things here that I didn't know before looking at the book. I find some of the instructions are a little vague. Having said that, I would still buy a book 2. I find youtube tutorials time consuming to find what I'm looking for and too slow to watch. I much prefer having a book to flip through when I need some help.

I'm so happy that I ordered this book. It arrived yesterday, and I spent my usual 2 hours of coloring time after dinner, just devouring the pages of information inside!There are many techniques explained clearly, step by step, and spaces within the book for you to "do it yourself". Personally, I plan to copy those pages, to practice repeatedly until I perfectly reproduce what I see in the book... THEN, I may color inside.Or, perhaps I'll leave it blank, to be passed down to the younger, budding colorists in my family. It's just that good.There are mediums suggested that I had never even thought of. I feel excited to get to trying my hand at these special effects, and I'm sure anyone else who loves coloring will feel the same.Go ahead, add to cart!

I love this book, the diagrams and instructions are very clear and easy to follow. The content is amazing, it covers a huge variety of techniques. I have done quite a lot of colouring, and you never stop learning, but I started the exercises from the beginning and am having so much fun. I can't wait for the next book.

I wanted to update my original review by adding some images of what I have learned to do. I also want to share a little tip that I find works nicely for me. I take tracing paper and place it on top of each step and color with my pencils. I get a good feel for the process. I keep learning and improving my coloring skills. I am very thankful for this book and am definitely looking forward to the next edition. You will need to know how to use the techniques from this edition in order to be able to complete some of the techniques in the next edition. Not sure how many that will entail. It is well worth learning now as you can see sneak peeks of the upcoming additions on Ms. Elliston's social media page. Now for my original review. I don't know where to begin. This Guide is fantastic. I am new to Adult Coloring and am so grateful that Helen developed this easy step by step guide to really make a difference in your pictures. I still have a lot to learn but have already seen a difference in how my images are turning out. I love that Helen is very active on Social Media and has asked for input on her 2nd Edition. I am definitely looking forward to that Guide as well. Colorist's Special Effects is well done. You have easy to understand photos along with instructions to get many desired effects. From Chrome, Hair, Skin, Lips, Eye Glasses and more, there is something new to learn at every turn. There are a lot of tricks for backgrounds as well as everyday items that add to your colored pieces. Glitter nail polish has become one of my favorite items to make certain images pop. If you want to take your Coloring to a Higher Level, I highly recommend this book. Learn to do jewels, bugs, tear drops, water drops, paint drops and more. I could go on and on, but if you purchase the book you will see what I am talking about. I am enclosing just a small sampling of what I have done. My clouds had an oopsy. They turned out beautifully, but then my Dog decided she wanted my attention right then. I recovered the best I could. Lesson learned, play with Dog before Coloring. Thank you, Ms. Elliston, for such a lovely Book. This book makes great gifts for friends that are Coloring as well. Have gifted to some special people.

This book is fantastic! It is very well put together and has all of the techniques, tips and tricks and guides that I've been needing to advance my coloring skills! From simple shading gradients, coloring hair, skin, eyes, fairy wings, etc. To mastering gems of all kinds and even making items appear to be metal. We all know that can be a tricky thing to achieve! This book is easy to understand and extremely helpful. The author lays everything out in brilliant color for you and gives you places to practice all of the tutorials. I wish I could give it 10 stars!

I thought my work had been advancing nicely on its own, until I purchased this amazing guide. It covers everything from basic blending and shading techniques, to more advanced drawing techniques, with spots to practice what you’ve learned. It also has a lot of tips for coloring elements found in most of the popular adult coloring books, such as fairies, gems, flowers, and crystals. There are several blank coloring charts in the back, which happened to be in need of. I followed along with the steps for drawing an eye and lips and they turned out amazing, especially since I’ve never drawn them on my own before!
