That is very cool, it was a great feeling when I managed to do that.Anyway, if you are looking where to start with learning C and the options seem overwhelming, just pick this book up and start from the beginning. It won't make a programming superstar out of you, but everyone has to start somewhere.

I really want to learn programming so I keep on getting these kinds of books. And among my all books I have read, this is the shortest as far I can remember. However, its shortness did not interfere from gaining new knowledge and each account is clear and easy to follow. Also, it is comprehensive enough and you will know the general things. I am not the brightest when it comees to coding. I found that this book was very simple and straightforward for what I needed to know. I signed on for a class and began to read the textbook material and found that it was not easy. Looking for a book that explains things in a simple manner is not easy as many of the books assume you have a background in programming. Now I feel confident that I can move forward with the class. Set in the mountains of Virginia, this sweeping novel tells the story of Ivy Rowe beginning in 1914 when she was a young teenager living on a farm way up on the mountain with her sisters and brothers and her father is lying in front of the fire slowly dying. When he does die her mother does what she can to keep the farm going because the farm had been in the family for generations and she wanted to keep it up for her eldest Victor, who has left to go work in a lumber mill. Her next oldest brother, Clarence Wayne, or Babe, who is half of the twins with the other half being Silvaney, is evil, while Silvaney suffered brain damage after a childhood illness is quite simple and loves to traipse about in the forest. Her older sister Beulah dreams of something better, while Ethel is a born talker and saleswoman. Garnie her younger brother is known as the preacher due to his obsession with revivals. Her mother came from a well off family and married for love and was cut off from that family when she did so. Red hair and tempers run in the family.Beulah becomes pregnant with the town boy Curtis Bostick's child, but whose mother won't let him have anything to do with her. So Beulah has the child and names it John Arthur after their father who was being buried the day the child was born. The description of the funeral and burial rites for a mountain person at this time are very interesting. For example, you are buried in your burial quilt with coins on your eyes.When Ivy's mother cannot keep the farm going they pack up and move into a bed and breakfast run by Geneva. At this time it's only Ivy and Garnie, because circumstance has led the others in different directions. Garnie come under the influence of a corrupt revival preacher and Ivy at the age of fourteen becomes pregnant, just as she is offered the opportunity to further her education at a nice school in Boston. Now she has to drop out of school to raise her child. When her mother dies, Ivy and Rose go to live with Beulah and it is there that she meets up again with Oakley Fox the first boy she kissed back on Star Mountain. But there's a much more interesting man who has her eye now.This book is told through a series of letters written to various people in Ivy's life. The unusual thing about this book is that there are no response letters. You are dependent on what Ivy says in her letters to figure out what has happened or is being said by the other person. Also, the language of the book is quite written quite backwoods at the beginning but it improves as her education improves across the novel. It is quite creatively done. Ivy is quite the firecracker and grabs life by the horns and does not let go. She makes mistakes but she does not necessarily regret them. I fell in love with this spirited character who reaches out to the reader connects with you in a very basic way. As are the characteristics of personality that effect the choices one makes.We readers, in our busy, harried lives too soon forget the hardships and reality of those that have come before us. Their story is part of our collective past and good to be remembered, if for nothing more than to reflect upon our own lives- how very different in which our circumstances.Through Ivy’s letters, Lee Smith, shows us a slice of time so different from our own. Some may long for the lifestyle of Ivy’s time;while many of us may be grateful we were born in this generation of time. Ivy’s story speaks to both of us.

My first thought was that this book is going nowhere. Then I thought of writer Lee Smith having to remember the misspellings and her computer page must have lots of red lines under words. As I read on, I got used to 'Ivy's' style. (It did improve.) The novel is in the form of letters written by Ivy to friends and family over a 70 year period of her life from her small West Virginia home. It includes the history of the 20th Century; the depression, world wars up to the seventies and the characters who were all part of these events. It was an enjoyable book getting to know Ivy, her kin, friends, lovers and enemies through the letters.

Such a beautifully written story. Ivy Rowe, grows up in Appalachia poor but with a passion for reading, language and the beauty of nature. Beginning in the early 1900's, she tells her story through a series of heartfelt letters to various acquaintances and her long-dead sister.Through grinding poverty, heartbreak, death of loved ones, and, most of all; passionate love for her husband as well as other men, but mostly for her children, Ivy will grow in your heart and mind.I loved this book so much. This wild and intelligent, passionate and curious girl grows into a strong and woman, sometimes passive, mostly feisty.Please read it! This is one of my all time most unforgettable literary characters.

About the Author

Tad Burness, an auto historian, wrote more than 22 books about automobiles, including his beloved American Car Spotter guides. He also wrote syndicated "Auto Album" column, which ran from 1966 until his death in 2012. Matt Stone is a freelance journalist, author, broadcaster, and former Editor of Motor Trend Classic magazine. He has been a professional automotive journalist/photographer since 1990. He has authored and photographed ten automotive books and is a former member of SPEED/FOX SPORTS television network's Barrett-Jackson auction broadcast team. Matt is also a judge at various Concours d'Elegance, and a member of the LeMay-America's Car Museum Steering Committee. Everything I know about old cars, I learned from Tad Burness. I fondly remember his weekly newspaper drawing called "Auto Album". I clipped each week's picture and story, and taped them in a notebook. I still have them. Then came Tad's "Spotter's Guide" books. He must have had thousands of old magazine ads, and for those cars he didn't, he drew them. This book isn't just about a car my Dad had. I have had several of them, too. This edition is four of the "Spotters Guide" books in one durable, hardcover volume. It will get a lot of use from me, every time I need information, or to identify, a car I have just spotted. The most comprehensive guide to American cars. It will be treasured for a lifetime. And what a great price for this huge volume.

This book is so well put together. It was a gift for my Dad's B-day from a family friend. When my Aunt & Uncle layed eyes on it, they had to have it too. So I ordered one for them. I can't think of too many men 40 plus who wouldn't want this in their home library. Younger men & Women included too! I will probably be ordering more. 🤣

Mixture of drawings,old ad's and some actual photos of virtually all the cars from 1920 through 1990.Negative is cheap paper and ink quality.Somewhat confusing in the way it is put together with 1920 through 1939,1940 through 1965,1966 through 1980.1981 through 1990 are in separate sections ! Tad Burness put these out in separate editions years ago and now all the different editions are all in one book! Even more annoying early Corvairs and Corvettes are not in the Chevy section,65 Marlin is not in AMC section,65 Mustang is not in Ford section,1959-1963 Lark not in Studebaker section,1963-1965 Riviera is not in the Buick section yet other model Rivieras are in the Buick section,Valiant and early Barracudas are not in Plymouth section,there are many other examples like this so you need the index to find some models !!! Overall though I really enjoyed the book,lists engines and total sales for some years.Far better than the Consumer Guide car spotter guide.

For $23 this book is an amazing value. It includes all the volumes of Tad's previous Spotter's guides. I believe there was a hard cover version previously released by Krause Publications called the "Monstrous American Car Spotter's Guide." I believe that book stopped at 1980 though. I remember looking through the copy of the 1981-1990 Spotter's Guide my public library had many times as a kid and this looks exactly the same. It would have been nice if they had done this in full color as they did with the American Car Spotter's Bible 1940-1980. I have a copy of that as well and it is a treasured part of my personal library. Besides the black and white pictures and the slightly confusing manner the way the book is organized, this book is great for the classic American car lover! It will likely be collectable and increase in value in the future as many of the other Car Spotter's Guides have become.

Bought for my husband, but it was fun to look at all the old cars and find the ones that both our parents owned.

Neat book, finally found the car I had been telling my husband about for years, he remembered once he saw the info and pictures.

I bought this for my boyfriend for Christmas and was very disappointed the it is mostly pictures. I felt it wasn't work trying to send back so close to Christmas so i ordered a different book to go with it.

Very thorough, all American cars included for that period. Black and white pictures and too many on a page, not easy to identifya vehicle in some cases.

Six women depict Hoffman’s long and ambitious novel which retells the tragic event of the siege and defeat of Masada in 70 to 73 CE. The women: Yael, rejected by her ruthless father; Revka, the grandmother of two boys who witnessed the murder of their mother; Shirah, a medicine woman and her two daughters, Aziza, a warrior and Nahara, the rebellious, younger sister; and Channa, the barren wife of Ben Eleazar, the leader of Masada.The novel, told in sections, reveals the story of each heroine and her journey to Masada. The women share their tragedies, disappointments, and secrets as they care for the dovecotes, always aware of the loss of Jerusalem, of Roman brutality and of the catastrophe that awaits them all.The characters become difficult to distinguish between, the novel drones with repetitive description, spells, magic, and prayers to Ashtoreth that Jews (Israelites), left behind centuries before.Whether or not two women and five children escaped death at Masada by surrender is unclear however, known is that when the Romans entered the palace on Masada, all were dead, as the 960 Jews preferred death to slavery under the Romans.

One of the best books I've read. Saw a documentary on Masada many years ago and found it intriguing how a settlement of people lived and died on top of that mountain. Willing to commit suicide rather than be taken into a life of slavery. This novel gave insight to how real lives may have been lived and the many trials they went through over the years. Though the book centers on several main characters it still gives you a sense of what some lived with or through. And how women carried the burden of being women, feeling one way but having to act in another.The book is long, but once I got into it, it was hard to put down. It also came out that many of these women had intertwining lives that they didn't realize. Though I knew the story of Masada, I still was interested in how the author would tell the story and bring it to an end. Was not disappointed.....though towards the end I actually became very sad at so many having to come to such a fate.

"Dovekeepers" is the first book I've read of Alice Hoffmans'. In fact, one evening my wife looked at the book while I was reading in bed and said: "You're reading Alice Hoffman? I've read Alice Hoffman. But you don't read Alice Hoffman!"And so I DID read Alice Hoffman and I liked Alice Hoffman. This is a very good book. It's real deep and very weighty."Dovekeepers" orbits around the real life events of the early 70s A.D. in ancient Judea. Rome was large and in charge and in the midst of shattering a Judean rebellion (seen commemorated in the famous Arch of Titus in the Roman Forum only a few hundred yards from the Colosseum in Italy). Several hundred Jews fled Jerusalem to the desert near the Dead Sea and moved into the former mountain fortress of King Herod at Masada. While the proud Jewish rebels held off a Roman legion for several years, Rome ultimately prevailed and all but two women and five children killed themselves rather than allow themselves to be overrun.Hoffman's novel follows the lives of four women who all find themselves on Masada. Each woman has a dedicated 100-150 pages that weave in and out of each other's stories with the collective whole building a comprehensive picture of their mutual plight. The stories connect the women together in ways that are obvious and follow the primary arc of the novel, but also in ways that are surprising and poignantly fulfilling. The connections build and develop on many levels: physically, emotionally, and symbolically.The book is full of characters who are broken and hurt; affected by some deep trauma catalyzed by the Roman attacks on Jerusalem; driving each, by their own will or otherwise, to the fortress in the desert. One of Hoffman's women is Yael, a deeply fractured and self actualizing individual who sums up the disparate journeys that brought the women to Masada: "We came like doves across the desert. In a time when there was nothing but death, we were grateful for anything, and most grateful of all when we awoke to another day."You'll feel the weight of each character's pain and sorrow increase as the novel progresses. There are few happy endings. Hoffman's themes cover the gamut from fate and destiny, to religion and love, and the depths of devotion.Faith is a thread that runs throughout Hoffman's carefully woven tapestry. It's not just a religious entity, but something that binds individuals, family units, as well as the entire rebel community. In Revka, Hoffman ponders the rebel Jews: "If we lost our faith, we would become like the clouds that swell across the western sky when the wind pushes them into the desert promising rain but empty inside." This first comes from Shirah, `The Witch of Moab': "Being human means losing everything we love best in the world. But would you ask to be anything else?" This second is from Revka: "...our waking life is formed by our sorrow. " In each character is anchored a heavy weight.In this misogynistic society, few men come across in a truly positive light. Though Hoffman writes very sparingly, in her few words, she's able to expresses a multiplicity of ideas and thoughts. Characters are never solely what they seem to be and there is very little that is purely black or white. Hoffman's world is filled with shades of gray.This book is going to resonate strongly for a lot of readers. It may be a bit polarizing because of its very serious nature. But as a first time reader of Hoffman, and a male, I feel fuller for having read this novel. I highly recommend it.

Ever since I went back to work, a morning meeting is out of the question. Finally, I thought to call the local library and guess what! They have an evening book club!The Dovekeepers was the book selection for the month. I've never read Alice Hoffman before and with close to 600 pages, I feared I may not make it to the end. Boy, was I wrong. The Dovekeepers tells the story of nine hundred Jews living on Masada in the desert, under siege by the Romans. We see life in the mountain fortress through the eyes of four women all assigned to work in the dovecote. Each arrives at Masada from a different path. Each has a story, and a secret which eventually binds them all together. Their fight for survival often conflicts with a deep faith that governs their way of life.Alice Hoffman has given us a poignant, beautiful and gripping novel. It has been meticulously researched and written. I learned so much about a piece of history that I knew little about and it touched me deeply. The language used to tell these women's stories is magical. How they are woven together is perfection. The Dovekeepers is not to be missed.I received a warm welcome as the newcomer in a well established book club. The discussion was lively and made me think about events in the story in a different light, one that I wouldn't have thought of on my own. I read a wonderful book, one that I never would have chosen myself. And I made some new friends who share my love of books.Whether you belong to a book club or not, please put The Dovekeepers on your list of must reads. A whole new world may be opened up that you never expected. I know it did for me in more ways than one.
