Review

*A Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year**A Barnes & Noble Best YA Book of the Year* "The Boneless Mercies feels like a cathartic war cry advocating for the power of girls and women. [...] A dynamic critique of the hero's journey: Who is granted honor and glory, and at what cost does it come?" ―The New York Times Book Review"Tucholke injects close intimacy into her lush saga, interweaving love and murder, mercy and glory into her portrayal of life and death. It is a beautiful, haunting modern-day epic that stars a bold and resourceful sisterhood of heroines unafraid to claim agency." ―Publishers Weekly, starred review"Frey embodies the pursuit of glory through quest to become a hero remembered in story and myth. Fans of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings will find similar themes and elements. This is a must-have for avid fantasy readers who enjoy action-packed plots. VERDICT An excellent choice for any YA fantasy collections." ―School Library Journal, starred review"Narrator and protagonist Frey is quite unusual among female heroes: hungry for glory ― bloodthirsty, even . . . These fierce, honorable adolescent female warriors hold their own and break all the rules. Marked by flawless worldbuilding. Wow." ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review "It's easy to call this a gender-swapped retelling of the epic Beowulf, but that fails to convey its true charm . . . There is room in this world for more than one epic, and we can hope that Tucholke will return to it to tell us more about this ongoing feud." ―NPR.org"[T]his story heroically contemplates female strength and agency, compassionversus vengeance, and the value of glory." ―Booklist"Frey’s earnest narrative voice creates a strong sense of the center of this fantasy: female solidarity. Bodily closeness, a shared quest for justice, and sheer joy in physical capacity are only part of it: collaboration and attentive respect are the true underpinning of Tucholke’s creation. This is the quiet force behind a plot of conquest and adventure, and of the diverse religions, cultures, terrains, and tales that make up Tucholke’s invented world. A dark and vivid story, with what-happens-next? momentum." ―The Horn Book"April Genevieve Tucholke's genderbent Beowulf is as dark and quietly mysterious as the fantastical winter in which it takes place. Her alternate Scandinavia is a land of powerful magics and eerie landscapes, bloodlust and genuine, deep friendships, that is full of foreboding, menace and eventual (though not unfettered) glory."―Shelf Awareness"Fierce and glorious, this story of outcast girls defying fate utterly bewitched me. Tucholke is a gorgeous writer." ―Laini Taylor, New York Times-bestselling author of Strange the Dreamer"The Boneless Mercies maintains the mystical, haunting flavor of an ancient ballad across the length of a novel. Its every page hints at a deeper magic at work; it contains a whole world and all its myths and histories within its skin." ―Melissa Albert, New York Times-bestselling author of The Hazel Wood"Ruthless and lyrical, heart-warming and blood-chilling, and beautifully redolent of ancient tales and history. It will sing to a new generation of heroes." ―Samantha Shannon, New York Times-bestselling author of The Bone Season

Boneless Mercies is one of my favorite reads of the year. First, it's written by April Genevieve Tucholke. I feel that her overall prose is "dashingly dark." For the most part, Tucholke is a fantasy writer, and from the stories that I have loved, she delves into a dark place and makes it beautiful. I originally fell in love with her writing when I first read Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. My appreciation for her writing stemmed from there.Boneless Mercies is an adventure that roams through Vorseland with the Mercies, a small band of death-traders who are doomed to deal quick, quiet, and merciful deaths for trade. Frey, Ovie, Runa, and Juniper are the warrior, the secret, the speed, and the Sea Witch. Together, they band together to fight the Jotund, and the outcome? A fight worthy of legends in Holhalland.First of all, the Mercies are a formidable group. Not only did I relate to every single one of them, they gave me strength and inspiration. Together, they were a group of females that had respect not only for each other, but for their trade. Individually, I learned from their stories and also felt connected to them in their own way. And can we please give an applause to the fact that this warrior-cast is led by an all female cast?Tucholke's prose always has a factor that contains an emotional sway. There's a relation that I correlate with Boneless Mercies to one of a somber song with minor chords. It gives me a tonal mood, adding another layer of this experience. I never once felt the pacing, and often I felt that I didn't have enough time in the day to absorb all the fine qualities of this story.I loved every bit of Boneless Mercies, and I urge you to read it.*Thank you to the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.*

There is something about the prose that is so perfect. It's not flowery or lyrical or sumptuous. Instead, it calls to mind classical ballads. A bit spare, frank, straight-forward. But there's a beauty in it's simplicity and a special kind of weight or gravitas that the words hold. Captivating and inspiring.Feminist in it's advocating of girls thoughts, longings, and dreams. The gender reversal is fantastic. I love how these girls are all so diverse and come from such different backgrounds, beliefs, and religions. They all come together in sisterhood to support one another's dreams. They all fight for glory and honor and a right to belong. And they're not ruthless. I think that's the most empowering thing about them. They are killers. they are warriors. But they also see the humanity of their prey. hey understand the sacrifice they are making and that it is not done without purpose. They also see a bigger picture too. And that is something that I think is often passed over when told from a male warrior prospective.

I loved everything about this book! The way the wandering Mercies have taken each other, wounded and damaged as they each are, and made a family they can rely on, standing up for and trusting one another in all situations gave me a fresh surge of hope. Their journey through their at times bleak world, seeing the injustices that befall girls and young women in particular, while plying a trade that wears on their souls only deepens their desire to make the world better, to slay monsters without becoming them. It was a gorgeous read that was necessary as oxygen. I loved it!

“Four Boneless Mercies stood at a crossroads near a hangman’s tree. It was like something from a Vorse saga. In their hands they held four weapons, freshly ripped from the grave.” 🖤 ⚔️🖤⚔️🖤⚔️🖤⚔️🖤⚔️🖤 Strong women who don’t need to be saved by anyone, who are the heroes of their own story, this book was filled with triumph, battles, and glory. Frey, Runa, Ovie, and Juniper are exactly the type of heroines needed for today. And always.

Absolutely amazing book. It is a lyrical, beautiful story of sisterhood and self. I really hope the author writes more stories in this world about these characters. Can move a little slow at times and the characters could have been a touch more fleshed out, but the beautiful writing and strong story makes up for any flaws for me.

Does anyone know of a book with a similar feeling to this? I loved the comraderie and the tale of glory and adventure that focused on the connections between the main characters rather than using romance as the driving force. Preferably a book with female leads or at least female main characters. This book left an impact. I have no words for how amazing this book was. It was everything I didn't know I wanted in a book. The whole mentality of death and honor in this book was captivating. That might sound weird but I just loved how the mercies handeled themselves and how they took tragedy and made it something to honor and not to mourn. I also loved the portrayal of the two main evils because they were given a voice and the chance to have their story told. There wasn't just mindless destruction left and right instead the "villains" had substance. I can't even get out everything I wanted to say if you're wavering on reading it I highly recommend that you do.

Right at the beginning, I loved this book. Strong female characters and bloodshed that is perfectly described: shut up and take my money. But, as the story progressed, I found that none of the characters had much depth. I knew I was supposed to like them, but couldn’t connect. The author seems to be setting the book up for a series, however I think I’ll pass.

Definitely a page-turner! creative and excellent plot complexity.
